When a BF-109 Sliced Through a B-17

The All American, high over the skies of Tunisia was practically split in two by a BF-109. A testament to the ruggedness of these birds was that this one kept flying and got all the crew back safely to Biskra air base. Over the years many versions of this story have been embellished with the mistruths. We tried to stick to the facts for this one, leaving out embellishments such as the lashing together of parachutes to keep the tail on and falsehoods such as landing in England over 2000 miles away ! We think it's an amazing story with just the facts.

When I was a young kid, my best friend was my cousin, Mark. One day he and I were looking through a box of his Dad's WWII pictures and we came upon a photo of a B-17. This wasn't surprising since his Dad had been a mechanic at an air base in North Africa. The amazing thing was that this particular B-17 was almost completely cut in half just ahead of the vertical stabilizer. The plane had even been the subject of a Life Magazine article, so we thought it was pretty cool the see the plane his Dad had worked on made famous . That plane was the All American... subject of this video. From the stories Mark's Dad told us, everything in this video seems to get all the facts right, and it's fun to see that amazing story online. It really is a testament to the ruggedness of the B-17 and the crews who flew - and maintained - them. BTW, I had another uncle who was the pilot featured in a series of articles in Life Magazine as it flew a number of missions over Germany and another uncle, the late Sgt Major Brooks Cely, USMC who appeared on the cover of an issue leaping from a LVP-(R) landing craft as it his the beach on Guadalcanal. As you can imagine, we kids grew up with quite a few war stories, especially since my Dad came from a 5 star family. All the brothers made it home, even Uncle Raymond who spent a good deal of the war after 1943 in a Stalag (Luft) until liberated by my Dad.

Amazing story - those iron ladies were as tough as old boots. I heard a similar tale recently, of a B17 that came back from Germany with a gaping hole in the fuselage; she got her crew home, got down safely and only then, deciding she'd had enough, collapsed and broke in half. Truth never needs embellishing - never mind what John Ford once said!

I am a military historian (non professional jsut been at it since 1974). Bravo! I love seeing these stories come to life. How about a video on the man who inspired the opening scenes of Private Ryan, and the motto of the US Army Rangers? Brigadier General Norman “Dutch” Cota, was assistant division commander of the 29th Infantry Division and a major contributor to the strategic planning of and advisor in Operation Overlord. When General Cota came ashore at Omaha Beach, he saw men huddled and hiding, weapons tossed aside or lost in some cases. With Utter disregard for his own safety he rallied and led the troops to open one of the first exits off the beach. Shouting "Gentlemen, we are being killed on the beaches. Let us go inland and be killed. He advanced to the seawall, using Bangalore torpedoes and wire cutters to clear a path. They destroyed the machine gun nest, and punched through. General Cota had also found Max Schneider’s 5th Ranger Battalion under cover, Cota shouted “What outfit is this?" A loud voice replied "5th Rangers!" To which he shouted his response "Well, God damn it, if you are Rangers, then get up there and lead the way!" "Rangers lead the way" became the motto of the U.S. Army Rangers thereafter.

Again, well done, Yarnhub! Super accurate story here. We have SSgt.Sam Sarpolus' uniform and story currently on display. The Michigan Heroes Museum relates the stories of over 850 Michigan warriors and astronauts on a rotating basis, and we know Sam's story well. Here are some things about that day that you might not know: - Boeing used the photo of the All American in flight taken by Charles Cutforth in a magazine advertisement, boasting their quality craftsmanship in 1944. We have a copy of that in Sam's display - Sam said that during the event, he was preoccupied with fighting off the 109's. He looked to see if any chutes were dropping below him, but he just kept firing at the German planes until they disengaged, as he did not see any. - Sam also related that Captain Bragg turned over control of the All American to the co-pilot and called a meeting in the center of the plane. Sam said, "in order to get there, had to crawl over what was left of the catwalk and part of the German plane's wing that was embedded in the fuselage, looking at daylight on both sides of the ship, and got to the center the same time as the skipper." - The meeting in the center of the plane was where they decided that they would ride her (the All American) back. - A doctor who rushed onto the field to treat injured crew members, was happily told by Sam, "No business today!"

Give it like another 40 years. One day you’ll look up, see what looks like a wreckage of parts that pulled itself together from different ends of the earth flying high with a smoke trail reading “YOU CAN’T PUT ME DOWN!” Because b-17s are tough old birds, and despite the damage this one kept on flying.

At the end of the war and their useful life they were auctioned off , lots of them just for the fuel in their tanks , the aircraft were then turn apart and put in the foundry furnaces to be melted down to make all sorts of aluminum products including pot and pans . Some were saved from that fate . The same happened to hundreds of other bombers and even fighters , there are photos of those stripped of engines stacked on their noses in rows

Well the Germans were occupiers. They were ‘bravely’ (pointlessly) attacking US planes in process of liberating the region and handing back countries to their occupants. Little realistic long term plans (I mean real ones not fantasies.)
