When a Japanese Submarine Attacked California

While we all remember Pearl Harbor, it was not the only time in World War II that Japan attacked the United States. In February of 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy had a submarine surface off the coast of California and bombard the shore with shells. And while the Ellwood Oil Field near Santa Barbara took little actual damage, the attack left quite an impression on the American people. Through the national fear it created, this weak Japanese attack managed to cause the Battle of Los Angeles, a night of city-wide panic which saw anti-aircraft guns fired into the sky while five people died in the chaos. It all teaches a valuable lesson on the danger of wartime anxiety, but I'll leave that to a history teacher. Instead, enjoy the story of World War II's forgotten Japanese attack.

Can't wait to be one of those people who can say they've been here before you got big when you inevitably get hundreds of thousands of subs

The most amazing thing about this channel is that it hasn't gone huge yet. Best kept secret on the internet. Please keep up the great work, it's gonna go massive soon.

2,000 drunk people breaking windows and singing "God bless America" sounds like the thing i do every weekend. But instead it's doing PCP and listening to System of a Down.

The term "dry humor" has always been a little funny to me, I always think, "Is there a whet humor?" And that just sounds wrong.

For the quality of these videos I’m surprised how few subscribers you have. Just a suggestion, you should do a video on the 1904 Olympic Marathon, it you haven’t heard of it.

I love videos! Just a suggestion but maybe you could make one on Agent Garbo? He was a farmer turned double agent from Spain working for Great Britain during WWII. Supposedly he was a kickass spy and lied to the Nazis about D-Day and convinced them they were landing on a different beach or something along those lines im a bit hazy on the details. Either way could be interesting and would love to see it in your style.

@@A-Grain-of-SaltGarbo is extensively covered, doing one on Duško Popov, another double cross agent, would be more interesting IMO. Or the overall double cross system, and how incompetent the German intelligence agency in WW2 (the Abwher) was.

The other Kozo being a breathing technique expert is quite ironic considering the sub commander most likely died by drowning when they sunk him
@A-Grain-of-Salt
@A-Grain-of-Salt 9 ай бұрын
He actually survived the war! The submarine I-17 was sunk in 1943 but Nishino had been transferred to a different one by then. So maybe he was in fact the same Kozo Nishino who went on to coin that breathing technique using his knowledge of underwater living.
