James met endurance cyclist Jenny Graham, the fastest woman to cycle around the world, for a lesson on bikepacking. As a pro cyclist he's always had people to help him out and make him as comfortable as possible between races, but with some new challenges on the horizon he needed to be taught the essentials of bike touring. Jenny and James headed for an overnight trip into the wilds of Devon for an induction, and like any beginner bikepacker he turned up with too much kit...

Went on my first bikepacking trip on June 1st of this year and rode 478 miles in 5 days of riding plus 1 day of rest, visited 2 amusement parks, hiked a mountain, walked in the fossilized footprints of dinosaurs, saw a bear, camped under the stars and rode in all 6 states of New England. It was probably the greatest vacation and adventure ever. Wouldn't have done it without being inspired by the awesome GCN team and videos!

Bikepacking/Biketouring. Once you have a comfortable bike in working order, then you don't need anything more than what you have in your own home. I travelled the fjords of Norway last month, spending 20$ on oats/rice. That's it, while other spend 1000s of dollars to experience a sanitized version of the same adventure. On my last bike trip, I ended up talking with a random veteran, while sitting on a park bench. We talked for a couple of hours, then he turned to me with his alcoholic breath. "You're an okay guy." He emptied a leather pouch, and out came 3 medals. He handed me one of them. A silver iron cross from ww1. "This is yours." Almost every tour, I meet memorable people like him. i.imgur.com/3cZdk1c_d.webp?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&fidelity=medium Do you remember The Fellowship of the Ring? In the beginning, when Bilbo longs to go out there again, see mountains again? How no one back home can relate? Like you don't fit in their busy civilized time zone? That's probably the only down side at the moment for me. "I think I'm quite ready for another adventure." As the character Bilbo said before departing to the hidden valley.

Great vid, top presenters as has been said I got to re-cycling (after many years not) after a good while doing wilderness expeds, (mostly in canoes) so the “packing” element was the easy bit really. I had gear and experience in all that. One thing to bear in mind when packing .... a guy said this to me years back and was correct .... “people pack their fears” ... By which he meant, if they are scared of being cold, they pack about 5 times as much warm gear as is needed etc. Second point would be .... take very little that doesn’t do more than one thing ... a poncho is also a tarp is also a bivi bag, ground sheet etc. Not sure if this helps anyone but thought I’d try to ring bells that were rung for me years back

I just can't figure out where the heck to put my rations. After getting the absolute requirements for my region, which seem missing from these kits as they rode expecting hard shelter, tent and bivy, I got no place to put food, which seems a bit concerning to me.

So!!!! - Jenny Graham. What can I say. She is an absolute star. She gave a talk in our local high school (Dingwall academy) just after she finished the RTW trip, and it was without a doubt one of the best presentations I have ever heard. Everyone in the audience felt like they did the ride with her, and at times the emotions were pretty high. Very open and honest about the hard stuff, but also hugely positive about the good stuff. So Jenny - more power to your elbow.

Wonderful production again from GKN! Jenny is a natural presenter and between her and what’s his name? Not a wasted word of dialogue. For the record, did a tour of the South Island of New Zealand over two weeks in 1976 with my wife. Kit consisted of a 2/tent, 2 sleeping bags, 500g gas stove , one change of clothing each, minimal toiletries and used camping grounds on two nights only. We slept by rivers, drank from them too, and bought rice and beef mince daily which we cooked with chillies and garlic each evening for most of the trip. My wife was not a cyclist at the start of the trip but was at the end! So proud of her.

Fantastic Video. Jenny is so lovely and James is great fun. I went on my first bike packing trip with my younger brother in the 1980s when I was 16, It was in the Otway Ranges, a coastal mountain range in Australia near the 12 Apostles. I had a back pack strapped to an old spring loaded packrack that gave me a speed wobble from hell coming down a mountain with a car right behind me. At night we rode along this great little track lit only by our old bike light with a tiny incandescent globe 2 size D batteries. We could hardly see a thing. In the morning we awoke to find we had been riding along the edge of a cliff! We flew down a mountain track called Wild Dog Track and met a wild dog .. as you do, and it ran beside us all the way down to the Sea. What an Awesome trip. 32 years later an it is still one of my fondest memories.

All right, great bicycle 'touring video' . In my mind, bikepacking is when you leave the roads and hit the cart trails and single track. Certainly was very good for a beginner overnighter and learning situational class. At least there was no whining but rather laughter and good times. :)

I haven't packed in years, just preparing to give it a go again. One thing though, that bothy; nice basic shelter?! Jeez that's super nice. I guess I carry too much. I want my tent, my stove isn't that small, and I want my water filter, which also isn't very small.

As an American, it's a little bit harder to understand Jenny with her accent, however she seems to be a very charming lady. She has an infectious smile so it is very hard not to smile when she presenting. Would love to see more videos with her in it.

Nice to see someone bikepacking with road tires and deep section wheels! I cycled from Stockholm to Amsterdam with 58mm wheels and 28mm VIttoria Corsa Control tires this summer. I chose to leave the camping gear home and sleep at hotels, though.
