Instead of an Afghan girl in need of aid, the wounded individual was 22 year old US marine Lance Corporal Winder Perez. It was not a normal battlefield injury, however that made this situation unusual. Instead of a mundane bullet or shrapnel wound, something more substantial, and far more concerning awaited them...

I was a kid living in Chicago during the Vietnam War. A soldier made the front page news when he was hit by a mortar round which did not explode. It entered at the top of his chest and lodged in his abdomen. He was airlifted to Tokyo and a brave surgeon volunteered to remove the undetonated explosive. The Chicago Tribune ran a picture of the x-ray showing the shell inside his body.

explosive bullets dont have exactly high blast radius, also theyre not meant to kill people necessarily but to bust through armor, so much so many explosive cartridges dont detonate in contact with flesh because they will just pierce right through and detonate on whathever hard surface they hit afterwards, because theyre meant to bore a piece of the armor then explode to maximize damage done to it.

The Marine's Platoon Sgt was my chief instructor for Navy Corpsman Field Medical Training school in 2013 and he told my class this story. They were caught in a narrow alley way and were fired upon by up to 5 or so RPGs with one of them being lodged into his Marine's leg. And what they wont tell you is that the Medevac crew flat out refused to transport and in the heat of the moment Sgt drew his weapon on the crew demanding they medevac. It was after that the crew put it into a vote. Needless to say Sgt was repremanded and was not allowed to lead his Platoon for a few weeks.

I read about RPGs long ago that it has a sight range of 500 meters up to 900, at which point it automatically explodes. It's designed to shoot down aircrafts or vehicles at a distance and is intended to explode sometimes before it even penetrates. So it's likely the RPG was shot at close range and hit soft tissue dampening and not exploding. Thank god the enemy doesn't know how to properly use weapons and thank god the soldier is safe.

Maybe not exactly improper use, but I figured it must've been a panic shot because there's no way how I can see someone try and blow a man's leg off with a rocket. Personal guess was that he was going for a direct shot on the ground to disorient the Marines or the more unlikely option was to have the RPG bounce off the ground and blow up some distance back.

Soviet Era rocket launchers are OLD, manufactured decades ago. The propellants, detonators and explosives have a limited shelf-life, usually 10 to 12 years before they eithere turn inert or malfunction. That rocket fired into the marine could have easily been 20+ years old, both it's propellant and detonator had long since eroded, meaning the rocket was fired at a fraction of its intended speed. This is a common problem in Ukraine for both Russian and UA forces (frequent duds as the munitions being fired were manufactured when the Soviet Union still existed).

Normally I would agree with you but this video leaves out a crucial detail that doesn't get mentioned much and that is the fact that the SGT had to pull his gun on the medivac crew to motivate them to ACT LIKE Soldiers and not whiney bitches. They signed up for the Military and that means your new job is to be put in harms way and face deadly peril until you die or the war is over. That pilot forgot that important fact or just thought that he was gunna cruise on easy street or something, I'm glad there was at least one real man along for that mission or the guy who got the rpg warhead stuck in him would have been left to die when you are supposed to treat other soldiers as brothers and leave no man behind. Lofty ideals and inspiring quotes often times are forgotten in the exact moments they need to be remembered and acted upon. I will never EVER spill blood or risk my life for this country, because the pathetic leaders and politicians in the US will drop you in a meat grinder for nothing, risk your life unnecessarily, lie to you and throw you to the wolves and if you survive all of that and make it home they will forget about you, leave you to languish in pain and despair in the hopes that you kill yourself so they can write you off completely because to them you are considered a drain on their resources despite the fact that you are already only getting about 10 percent of the care and help they promise you if you are injured or crippled fighting in a war that they fabricated for political reasons. This world is so fucked up.

This happens a lot, surprisingly. A soldier once came in with RPG lodged in the abdomen. The medical team will move the wounded soldier far away from the hospital into a bag bunker and slowly remove it. If you succeed, you get a medal. I have never heard of a crew getting blown up in these situations because if the rocket didn’t go off when hitting the soldier, it was a dud. But for safety reasons, this was never removed in the field hospital

There is a reason for why military never take chances with unexploded ordinance, even if it is a dud. Just because it didn't exploded like it was supposed too, doesn't mean it can't go off by other means. After all, most explosives are by design meant to be extremely volatile.

A delayed reaction was possible but rpgs take about 100m to arm meaning it was fired under 100m and did not arm so it was probably never going to explode

Getting shot with anything is a very nerve wracking time in your life - it can really ruin the nice day you were having - but this takes it up a notch.

There was a similiar incident with a Swedish soldeir in Afghanistan who got his leg crushed by a RPG round.

I remembered learning about this incident. He is the most luckiest guy who cheated death. Having a proppelled launcher locked in your leg is a scary and yet extreme difficult to remove. Im glad that he pulled through but it had to be the most challenging effort to save a life especially not risking the proppelled grenade to explode infront of surgeons.

What made him even luckier. Was that the RPG he was hit by was a 40mm Shrapnel anti infantry shell. They have hair pin trigger that blow up on hitting ply wood.

It's more common than you think. I've heard stories about guys who had 40mm grenades or entire mortar rounds lodged inside them and most of them survived.
