You can hear his disappointment in sarcasm, and his respect in valor. To be fair, Riot has some ridiculous weapons. Trapped in the void for an indefinite amount of time, and now you come back to the goofy universe of people throwing birds, scissor-legs, and bear traps on a rope.

Correct me if i am wrong but i think they changed the Darkin Lore, they were never in the Void (in the new Lore) They are failed/corrupted (but not by the Void, a Void infused Aatrox would be able to open the Void Gates and destroy the world) Ascendants (there are even statues of the pre corrupted Darkin in Shurima) but the aspect of twillight thaught humans to trap them in their weapons (wich puts them trough constant pains wich slowly broke them, some of them (Joraal) have gone fully insane) but they think to end their pain they have to destroy Runterra (hence why i think they would join the Watchers (the Void)

Jax has actually killed a (currently unnamed) ascended in his lore. Darkin are corrupt ascended- so Aatrox has plenty of reason to respect him.
