When a paramedic listens to a patient's chest and hears no breath sounds, several potential conditions could be causing this symptom.
Asthma is a inflammatory disease of the airways, characterized by episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. During an asthma attack, the airways narrow due to inflammation and bronchoconstriction, which can significantly reduce airflow. If we hear a slient chest in asthma it is typically bilaterally.
On the other hand, a pneumothorax occurs when air enters the pleural space, the area between the lung and the chest wall. This can cause the lung to collapse partially or completely, leading to absent breath sounds over the affected area. This is typically unilaterally is the key finding.

Lungs having trouble inflating because air leaking into them. Most likely from a blunt or penetrating injury.

@@Rhettnorris09 so a decompression needle would be best right or would you use a vented chest seal?

@@NicholasLuna-sm4eb For any open penetrating chest wound, an occlusive dressing or vented chest seal is used to cover said wound to prevent air from sucking in. Whenever air has already been leaking into the pleural space, it would cause the lung to collapse and not oxygenate blood. In this scenario you would use a decompression needle. Chest seal prevents air from going in thru a open chest wound, needle decompression removes air from pleural space in emergency situations aka pneumothorax.
