When are my seedlings ready to plant out?

How to tell when those tiny seedlings have grown enough to put in the ground safely?
The best time varies a lot through the year, and according to what vegetable it is. In this little video I give a brief overview of some guiding parameters. Such as plant size, how much space remains in the module tray (too little causes leggy seedlings), and how much compost is still available for roots to grow.

While I have no problem watch an hours long video from you, I truly appreciate the way you make your shorts about another learning opportunity chock-full of useful info not dangling a carrot to make us watch a longer video. Much respect to you and your team.

One thing I've found germinating indoors is that the cooler a room you have with sun-facing windows, the better. Legginess is broadly avoided if you can keep plants at no more than 16C inside once they've germinated. And if it's not raining, being outside at 8-13C during the day doesn't seem to do any harm either for early sowings.

I also came to that conclusion. I had plants intentionally crowded as an experiment planted outside and even though there were quite a lot that stretched to cover every niche of light, nothing ever produced leggy seedlings like indoors, even when planted under shade. Some were left short and stunted, but not leggy. Some grew very long stems, but still produced a decent, less attractive to look at plant with a long, but still strong stem. None became anything close to the leggy seedlings I had indoors. Perhaps the warm temperature and lack of airflow makes it think it's crowded under taller plants on otherwise sunny days. If that's the case, it could elongate to catch more sun to grow better later and support itself by resting its vulnerable stem on surrounding stronger plants for support.

@CharlesDowding1nodig

Yes and no. I'm not considering those plants in March because I have not sown them yet and if you tailor your sowing dates to your likely weather conditions, this should not be too much of a problem, and you can use covers as well. When they're ready, they need to go in

Charles what about outdoor soil temperature?
@CharlesDowding1nodig
@CharlesDowding1nodig 5 ай бұрын
Yes indeed, what about it! We choose our sowing dates to fit the climate, then once you have seedlings, you can't do much about the soil temperature when they are ready. I never measure it because I can't do much about it, also measuring it now doesn't tell you what it will be in two days time, in fact we are forecast warmer weather.

Do you wait until all or seeds have germinated before you bring them out to the greenhouse? Im having a few plants bolt before some plants have germinated so i put them in my greenhouse to slow the bolting, is this correct or ahould i wait?i can see that all your plants are the same height, mine not so much 😅. Also im absolutely loving your module trays!
