The fact that DPR was basically told how he was going to get scammed -- the scammer would build reputation through previous smaller transactions (the 5 "hits"), leading up to one big transaction in which the scammer flakes on (the last $500k) -- is truly another level of poetic irony. This had all the foreshadowing, intrigue, and twists of a great drama. I'd be mortified, if I wasn't so impressed and entertained.

The fact that Red and White straight up told Ross the hitmen found USB drives in friendlychemist's home and Ross DIDN'T ask for those to be given to him or destroyed is absolutely an L on Ross' part. Yeah, the hit was never real, but Ross didn't know that. If it was real, and friendlychemist did have a list, the Hell's Angels would now have a list of all the users on Silk Road on a USB drive they could use to blackmail him. Red and White: Yeah we killed the guy who claimed to have a list of all the users on this site. He had some USB sticks. Do you want those? Ross: Nah. Red and White: You... you sure? Also, if he was unaware of an investigation why would there be any assumption that the evidence would likely be destroyed? There wasn't even hard evidence for pretty much anything in this case until they stole the laptop, they weren't issued a warrant so they stole the laptop. It was highly contested and the judge didn't allow them to use this defense because it broke the entire case and they wanted to put someone behind bars for the silkroad, even though there were MULTIPLE people running the DPR account. This red and white dude sounded so confident, it was hard to doubt him. But I still questioned the validity of his claims, and was wondering how DPR could verify them. So I was not surprised to find out it was all a scam. The speed at which the job was done, is quite suspicious. And how come both times, they never had any issue with being caught or something going wrong. It just seemed too perfect.

Keep in mind that it was honestly *very* believable- “RedandWhite” would have known who “FriendlyChemist” was and had allegedly taken out their partner already. He knew that FC had to be legit on some level since they did have evidence that they had info, and was an active threat- also keep in mind all of this happened over the span of a few days. The photo “evidence” with the numbers and the list of other socks they used likely cemented his belief.

"Also note that blackmail is an inherently dangerous activity. Informing someone that you know too much is quite rarely the best course of action, especially if Agatha Christie is holding the pen or you haven't told anyone else (but don't tell too many people, as that would, of course, defeat the purpose of blackmail). The danger (along with the potential stupidity) is compounded if the intended victim of the blackmail is already a murderer. After all, if they've already had sufficient reason to kill at least one person, is it very likely that they'll baulk at murdering another - especially if that other person is trying to squeeze them for money?" ~ TV Tropes Blackmail Page

Funniest part about Dread Pirate Roberts was he was actually very intelligent - in the real world. He had various college degrees in various subjects, even a Master’s Degree in physics. He was very well-versed in economics and politics and enjoyed reading about, and engaging, in Libertarian ideas with likeminded individuals, and he wasn’t an overbearing “in your face” type of political nut either. Some people simply aren’t built or made for the dark side of the world. Also, for those wondering, this isn’t the only time DPR got scammed. According to various reports, he had fallen victim to these types of scams a total of five times for a total price range of nearly $900k in Bitcoin. He even tried having his own moderator of the site killed once. The “murder-for-hire” scams were actually what sealed the deal for his prison sentencing. Two life sentences, for a scam. Can you imagine? Losing nearly a million dollars, a promising future, your family, your mind, and your freedom… because of a scam.

>some people aren't build for the dark side of the world Seems like you didn't really get the point of the video. He just didn't practice good opsec and subsequently got caught. @@MaxSaki373 then he wasn’t made for the dark sides of the internet. Just so you’re aware, accessing and using the dark web in itself isn’t a crime. Tor was simply made with privacy in mind. If you’re engaging in highly illegal activities on the dark web, yet can’t obtain decent OPSEC or learn about decent OPSEC, you might not be best fit candidate to use the dark sides of the internet. Thanks for saying what I said, differently.
@DadlessGaming1337
@DadlessGaming1337 Жыл бұрын
@@MaxSaki373 Also, OPSEC isn’t the only aspect of this he got wrong. You can setup a Tor box and still use the same setup and use the clear web. I can have a VM setup specifically so my home IP address never interacts with the VM in anyway and setup a VM to legitimately commit crimes on the same network setup I use to go to college and do work on. OPSEC wasn’t necessarily at fault here, it was mere stupidity. Which was my point. He could’ve used the clear web and alt-alias’d both. DPR also wasn’t the best programmer, SysAdmin or networker/server manager either but even then, that’s still not at fault here. Nachash and The Antichrist/Intangir used to operate Doxbin on the dark web and Intangir was caught for his activities with Lizard Squad, though he was never caught for doing anything with Doxbin. And Nachash admittedly said the feds likely exploited his code - which is crappy PHP code - to hijack his site and he was also never caught. OPSEC isn’t the only important aspect, neither is being a good programmer or networker. It’s all of the above. Being able to not be greedy and using good judgement to know when enough is enough and when pack your shit up and leave is arguable just as important as having good OPSEC. It’s the little things too.
@DadlessGaming1337
@DadlessGaming1337 Жыл бұрын
@@MaxSaki373 Also, you’re spot about the part of him not being good at everything, again which was my point. But that contradicts your statement prior to that. If he’s not good with OPSEC and only good with physics, for example, then maybe he should stick to that and not be a generalist. It doesn’t take much to learn either. For example, if you’re already a tradesmen and you possess decent mechanical ability, then you at least have your feet wet. Plumbers aren’t HVAC technicians, but they have a brain built for mechanics and can learn how to repair AC systems. I was a regular machine operator performing setups at a corrugation plant and then became a plumber for a bit and now I’m a supervisor in a carpentry shop. I was able to perform those and move up the letters, from a regular Joe-shmoe machine operator to a tradesman, because I started in a mechanical field and at least knew how to use a socket wrench. I wasn’t born with the ability.

LOL I saw the twist coming after a few minutes. The idea that red and white made an account just to talk to dread was the big give away. No crime lord would spontaneously risk exposing themselves like that. Then red and white was just way too casual with what they were up to. Admitting to murders in a damn chat. No one does that!

Well he is never portrayed as a crime lord but just as another member of this gang, surely one of the lower guys who do negotiate on the behalf of others. People who get busted and take the blame for all of it to protect the higher ups. However yes I don't believe any Hells Angels guy would have looked up how to get on SR and installed Tor and started chatting to this guy. The story seems fishy from an outside perspective. But this guy was making tons of moneys through his market place and he thought at that point he had someone killed for 80k $. So he probably started to feel like a powerful crimelord and in his mind it made sense that Gangs wanted in on this and he wanted in on the Gangs Profits. Dollar signs before his eyes and everything. I can totally see why he fell for it but as an outsider watching a youtube video that has already spun a narrative for you it is easy to see the conclusion.

KiraTV, this is super high quality content, very rare on YT. I am very fascinated by the SilkRoad story, and I find this video conveys the story better than the book American Kingpin. And the funny thing is, it's just a single part of the SilkRoad story, but it's so in-depth and gives you a real feeling of being part of it.
@KiraTV1

Thanks. Big fan of it too. I should have a video out this week with another part of the silk road story, told in a different way. Not sure you'll enjoy it as much as its more a narrative story than a telling of fact. But give it a try and let me know. Should release Wednesday. I'll also be doing an overall entire Silk road video, encapsulating all the individual stories in a coherent start to end overall picture...but that will be a long while most likely.

@@KiraTV1 Kira, Will I enjoy it? I can assume with high likely hood, that yes. I consumed a lot of content about that topic. That guy is just a very strange dude, and I am impressed with what he was able to pull off. It's surreal. Sometimes I wonder this: "How was he so grandiose not to realize that eventually he will get caught?" I think it's a hard question to answer. No matter the anonymity of the protocol, I just find it was very foolish to think that there will not be other ways to be caught. It's also a very strange dynamic that he had with that Variety Jones character, but I can see how that sort of person could pull of or be a part of SilkRoad. What's odd about Ross, is that he's upper middle class and there must be a moment where he just decided to move over to the dark side, and then he just kept falling deeper and deeper. Thanks for you comment and I look forward to your next videos.
@KiraTV1
@KiraTV1 Жыл бұрын
It isn't explicitly about Ross, or the actual function of the silk road, which is why I led with that. It's about curtin the admin and a dramatic, narrative telling of his story and the story of one of the corrupt agents, in a back and forth perspective switch from their meeting until the arrest of Ross. The culmination of all my interest on the topic, read all the books, watched all the movies, read all the forum posts and the compiled info. It has probably close to 400 hours work done and I was terrified to finish it, since I have no idea how good it is. I think it might be a flop, but I spent over a year on and off working on it, rewrote it at least 6 times in different styles and presentations. So will see I guess!

@@KiraTV1 Kira, I wish you luck to get appreciation for your work, because even this video alone is better than the American Kingpin book, and I re-watch this video from time to time. You rarely find me do that with a lot of video. And I don't even watch the Silk Road movie that much. I do believe in you and in your ability to bring out great content with it, and now that I learnt what's about, I am super pumped to watch it. I see you have very good content and know how to hunt down marginal stories that are very interesting. You just have to find a way to monetize it and get paid, check out what Jack from DarknetDiaries does, because I think there are people out there that would pay, considering how bad the content on the internet got. Funny enough, with all the capabilities out there and all the open info to learn, the majority of content sucks, I think because people don't want to put in the work and think it's easy to produce at high level.
