It’s important to keep rams in cool barns, sometimes the heat can make them sterile or lose the drive to breed. Here in Arizona, we put big fans throughout the barn to make sure that they are cooler and get in the mood for breeding. You’re doing an amazing job and we all enjoy watching your vlogs.

Thanks! I've got some big fans on the list of things to price out before next summer. You're so right. This summer heat really set our flock back.

I watched this video on May 30, 2021 and you have just learned that if you want more pregnant lambs let Billie and the boys have a 10 minute escape! LOL! We have been running a small online business for almost 20 years now. I track all sorts of things that no one else would think about AND long past the time I should have thought about it, I started tracking things that I should have a lot later which helped me so much in ordering new inventory, etc. Having computers to use makes the job easier. But I would like to tell Sandi, from 2.5 years ago to cheer up it does get better and many of us watch not to so much learn but because those lambs especially are just too cute! When the ewes are lambing I am rooting for them as much as you are.

"It was July, and it was hot as stink this summer." You could have sheared the ewes and rams before attempting to breed in one cycle. Then again, hindsight is 20/20... You are doing a great job Sandi. Please stop kicking yourself. Remember, you said you were still learning. Learn from this and adjust accordingly. #FARMON

Hi Sandi! I suggest to check your rams frequently at least 45 days before mating in synchronized ewes. If they have fever from any health issues they stop producing sperm. On the other hand, embryo mortality increases up to 35% in summer season. So your ewes may concieved but failed to progress pregnancy. At this point you can add GnRH to support embryo survival. Summer season mating is complicated and many factors can influence your success.

My uncle raises cows and goats. He had a calf break his leg, with me in healthcare/ orthopedics (at the time) I brought over some casting material and casted his front leg. Usually he euthanizes them but thought we would give it a try. Seemed to help, but had to redo several times. Calves are suspicious so the others would pick and pull at it.

Your a very strong woman. And I love your vlog. You have a great grasp at how life works, or so I thought... We learn the most by our failures in life. This life would be very dull if we always succeeded at everything. I watch your blog not because of your sucess but by watching your journey of highs and lows of you learning and growing over a period of time. Who cares what others think of you!!! They don't walk in your shoes or work to pay your bills at the months end. Stop giving folks that kind of power over you darling. You can clearly do it on your own. We can pull ourselves down all the time, so Instead now pull your self up with only positive. Everything will change.

Sandi, Your new system is a good one, I would add a few steps: REGULIN: melatonin treatment. It helps quite a bit. Flushing: 2 days After CIDER we add 200 gr of soy peels (48% protein) per ewe to the feed for 10 days till insemination, this will help. Consider AI program. Consider reinserting the used CIDERs(after you wash them and soak them in poly iodine od coarse) about a week or two after you take the rams away and leave them in till after second preg scan. Scan at 45 or 60 days, that way you can separate the negative ewes and move them to next ai group. Scan again at 90 or 120 days so you can see who has aborted or absorbed her embryo. We have a breeding cycle every 73 days..... that makes 5 lambing cycles annually. Meaning if we do it right, we find the bad ewes fairly quickly.
@daltm79
@daltm79 6 жыл бұрын
Forgot to add: 2 hrs after insemination: Introduce rams, leave in 5-7 days (1:7-10 ratio is goodif A.I'd) On the 17th day after insemination(19th day after PMSG) re introduce rams to the whole group. The rams will find the ewes that are re ovulating and jump them. Leave in for a further 5-7 days. You will have a second smaller lambing 2.5 weeks after the main group but you didn't waist the ewes cycle and you get more lambs. Success rate rises. Good luck Sandi. We are with you.

@@daltm79 I run 200 polypay ewes. lambing once a year, i breed in season. I flush for 2 weeks, and the following 2 weeks I synchronize the ewes with MGA. one lb. per ewe twice a day for 12 to 14 day's. on the 16th day I put 16 rams in for 7 days. I would love to come visit your operation! It sounds amazing! As for AI... I just don't think we can afford doing this many ewes... With my old system of breeding every 6 weeks, I could move those repeat ewes quicker through the system... that was a definite advantage of the system for sure.

Data on the sheep would be brilliant. It must give you the whole picture and help decision making. We can’t use it in our operation and have to rely on classing all young ewes and culling 33% every year. We join for six weeks coming into autumn at the rate of two and a half percent of rams for a lambing of about 120% which is very high for our area. It’s probably because we spend a lot of effort on wild animal control. Ewes are in groups of 800-1200 and run in paddocks averaging 5000 acres so they must walk well to be able to feed and water properly. A different world isn’t it. Keep smiling.

We are in no way as big as your operation so I don't know if this will help. We only have a handful of ewes but the same concept still applies. We raise show lambs, so we cant afford for a ewe to miss. We always leave the ewes with the ram for two heat cycles. We may start a little early for the first breeding to make sure they lamb in our show schedule window. We also shear our ewes and make sure they are conditioned well prior to breeding. The way we look at is that if they have a full coat and are under conditioned breeding is just that more difficult. It is very hot here well into the end of September. We just put our ewes in with the ram yesterday and it was 94 degrees.
@SandiBrock

Hey Michael! Thanks so much, yes... I too was on the two-heat system and had changed to only one heat this year.. kind of as an experiment to see if someday I could add induction at lambing time. However, after results just not good enough, I will be going back to that system. I'll have a detailed vlog about next steps soon!

Hi Sandy. I know that this video is quite old, but I had a question. When a ewe breaks a leg, can you not take her to the slaughterhouse for processing? I wondered if you all ate mutton vs. lamb? Or if it would be too expensive to process it even if you are donating the meat for those in need in the community? Take care. I love watching you. I come from a cattle ranching family, and sheep make for a difference. : )

The Lord gives and takes. 4 yrs ago 2nd best mare coliced. Took her straight to Mississippi State University. They have a fantastic large animal facility plus my alma mater. Surgery and saved her and her baby. The next yr my best mare coliced. She ruptured before I could get to Vet School. Her baby was 2 weeks old. Baby’s full brother won over $200,000. So couldn’t loose the baby. Loaded her up and went home. The next morn the baby was so depressed. Couldn’t find a nurse mare so the filly at the bottom os the totem pole of yearlings became her babysitter. No bottle.FoalLac pellets, hay cubes and feed for her. She thrived. We all have those rotten days. But oh the tremendous joy you have when everything falls into place. I just love it when a plan comes together. God Bless and as always sending you prayers across the miles. Oh by the way I now live in MS after 38yrs in FL.

The results this year have been lower than expected across the province. Yours is just a little lower than some and that would be because you don't give a second cycle to clean up a few extras. Semen testing your rams isn't a bad idea, but this year the heat in July is likely to be blamed.

Hey Jessica! I gave the ewes that were with this group of rams another chance. Good thing, because most of them caught. I decide what lambs I want as replacements around week 16. They have to have the genetics I'm looking for, decent gains, aim for a twin, and overall conformation.

Dear Sandi, First off its a rough year. We have had a terrible year for off season breeding. Please do not put the ewe down, cast her up and she will be right as rain in 2 months. We usually cull sheep after 3 failed inseminations. I do not thing culling after two fails would be the right thing to do. Rams: do you regularly check their fertility? Have you considered A.I? You will be able to keep less rams per ewe=money saver. We have no explanation for the bad year we had(country wide)..... happens I guess. Please don't give up.

No, its not economical. Vet would have to make a barn call. That's $$ Then the ewe would have to be sedated, more $$. Then an X-ray has to be taken to see the location and severity of the break, more $$. Then the cast has to be applied, more $$. After that another x- has to be taken to make sure the break is properly aligned so that it will heal properly, more $$. If not aligned, has to be recasted,$$. Then pain meds have to be given to take the edge off the pain to keep the ewe up and able to get to feed water, more $$. the vet then has to come back out to remove the cast later, more $$. before the cast can be removed yet another x-ray has to be taken to ensure that the Bones have healed properly, more $$. The vet bill for such an injury can get extremely large, very fast. For an operation such as this that has a bottom line, it's best to euthanize the to prevent undue suffering. And use the money not spent on large vet bills to keep the farm running and the multitude of other animals fed and maintained

@@middlekingdomfarmrebeccapa5035 hi Rebecca, May i ask a few questions please? 1. How good is very good(results)? 2. How many ewes do they have over all? 3. How many lambing groups do they have a year? Thanks.
@middlekingdomfarmrebeccapa5035
@middlekingdomfarmrebeccapa5035 6 жыл бұрын
Those with low ram ratios (2:1 or 3:1) and CIDR groups are getting over 70% this year and in better years consistently get into the 80% range. They run large flocks, over 600 ewes and exposing about 150 to 200 in one breeding group (split into small groups for breeding over a few days/weeks.) They lamb five or six times a year so each ewe gets a chance to lamb on an eight month schedule.

AI in sheep is usually surgical and therefore quite costly.
@SandiBrock
@SandiBrock 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave! Rebecca is right... sheep have a pretty complicated reproductive tract that requires a vet and surgery to do AI. With this many animals, its just more cost efficient to use rams. Coming from a dairy background myself, this was one of my first questions also!
@daltm79
@daltm79 6 жыл бұрын
@@middlekingdomfarmrebeccapa5035 Hi Rebecca, we operate an insemination centre here, we got to the same conclusion. Lap AI is costly, time consuming and labor intensive. We inseminate cervical AI method(not shot in the dark)with fresh semen for sheep and goats. Trans-cervical as well for goats.. works for us😊
@middlekingdomfarmrebeccapa5035

@@daltm79 transcervical was done here for a while in the 90s but success rates were not terribly impressive. What results do you get in season or out?
@daltm79
@daltm79 6 жыл бұрын
@@middlekingdomfarmrebeccapa5035 I should clarify, in goats we can get through the entire cervix via cervical AI method. We do not use the equipment and methods of the 90's, too slow and like you said... no great results where sheep are concerned. As for results.... every flock has its own indevidual result curve. Some places get upward of 75-85 percent some less, all depends on the flock and what programs they use.
