When Budget Phones Go Bad | Poco C40 Unboxing & Review

Unboxing the Poco C40 budget smartphone with a hands-on review of the camera tech, gaming performance and many, many bugs. I love the affordable Poco phones but the Poco C40 is sadly a janky mess, with basic optics and a JLQ chipset (who?)
Check out my coverage of the best budget handsets of 2022 so far, if you want to find some good value mobiles under £200.
On the plus side, you have a couple of bold colours to choose from and the battery life is also solid. That's about it, sadly. The Poco C40 is slow no matter what you're up to while games such as PubG and CODM are a struggle. Here's hoping this is the last time a JLQ chip is used in a phone for a while.
That camera setup is basic too, with a 13MP main sensor and a depth sensor, and that's it. Everyday photos look grainy with unnatural colours, while low light shots are right out. The Poco C40's 720p display is fine, no more, while the mono speaker is tinny at best.
You'll find better value smartphones from Poco on sale quite regularly, and check out Xiaomi's Redmi range too. Unfortunately I have to say steer clear of this one!

Definitely hit the nail on the head with that title. Hard pass from me, like you said at the end would rather buy a reduced Poco than this. Had an X3 Pro once, crackin phone and will blow this out of the water for not a lot more. Great video!

Basically the SoC is shit so the phone is sluggish. It seems like they only created this phone to help their compatriot Chinese chip maker by giving them a run in a smartphone and an entrance in the smartphone market. Too bad that only with this kind of phones we get to have an SD card and two sims anymore.

The location of the fingerprint sensor reminds me of Poco F1, though the Poco C40's fingerprint sensor location is a bit unusual.

This JLQ company is some join venture of qualcomm and leadcore mixed with some chinesse funds. This soc uses mix of ARM IP like core+gpu and qcom IP like Modem/wireless. Obv SoC appears to be weaker than 662 from Poco M3 from 2020.....

So I'm on an extremely tight budget and looking for a phone around £150 to use for the next two years. Recommendations? Should I get an older flagship like a Pixel 3/3a or a more recent budget phone? It's hard to find brands like Xiaomi in Ghana so that might be an issue. Thanks.

For MSRP this phone defintely isn't worth it. However, nowadays I've seen the 4gb version retail for 90-100 EUR. For 90 EUR a 6k MAh battery (compromised) Poco phone is definitely worth it.

This is how I see pocos lineup: C series - (crap) bare minimum features for non techy people, perfect for boomers who just dgaf or can't be bothered learning some new fangled device. Plays KZfaq Netflix and shoots photos poorly but the boomer probably won't notice the quality anyways. I'd probably as a second phone for receiving messages or watching stuff since the battery is solid but I wouldn't rely on it on important occasions M series- (mid)mid range. Suitable enough. The actual low budget range. Can play and process moderately. Budget gamer friendly X series- (eXtra) mid to high budget but not flagship level. Though oftentimes can be comparable to the flagship. High performance while cutting corners to meet the price range, usually the camera or the screen (although x4 pro uses OLED now if I'm not mistaken). Expect being able to play Genshin on max settings though I wouldn't recommend it realistically F series -( Flagship) no explanation needed. It's optimised for gaming

No, it is deliberate. Because if the budget device is too good then how will they make people buy the most expensive models? The closest Xiaomi got is the Redmi Note 10 Pro. Probably the last phone that has 2 sims with extras SD card, FM radio, Ir blaster, nice screen, headphone jack and the SOC is decent enough while the camera is respectable and the design is premium. I'll keep rocking this sucker for many years it seems even if it's just 4G.

@@SIPEROTH with super budget i wss talking about smartphones in the 80 to 120€ range, like the redmi 9a, motorola e20 etc, yours is 250-300€. They can be good purchases, but even if theyre decent bargains, they arent for everyone. They just have to nail the basics: good battery, not terrible performance, decent enough display, decent enough single camera. They dont need fast charging or fancy bells and whistles, just give a decent day to say experience for elders and youngers.

@@smarquez42 If you are buying under 150 you are risking your money too much because you are buying unknown since even companies that offer decent hardware for low price like Xiaomi, usually have their low end models around 150-200. So you are buying a complete no brand whatever going lower than that. You are better buying a level higher like what i did and get a decent good device for just a little more. I basically got a device that has little to be jealous of high end smartphones at a quarter of their price(even has amoled 120hz). While you get much much lower quality that has more difference from my device than my device has from a top device by trying to get one at 80-120. Probably not gonna last long either. There is a level on how cheap you can go and still be smart.

Yeh it's a rebrand of Redmi 10/10c (a part from the processor), for the information all the mobile phones of Poco is a rebrand either xiaomi phones or Redmi. Exept Poco F1 which was first phone from Poco.

Yeah, tho sometimes it's the opposite too, I think i remember it's the Poco M3, a couple weeks later Xiaomi released Redmi 9T, which is pretty much an identical phone, with the only difference between a slight visual change, an ip rating and a ultra wide camera.

Poco is basically a much worse version of Xiaomi's "top bad things". The experience of the bugs from the Xiaomi's MIUI feels much more worse. I had both Redmi and Poco. Definitely had bugs on Redmi where sound plays on earpiece all the time and the wireless connectivity stops working. My Poco on the other hand, had nonsense stuttering and overheating, plus the camera crashed (that time, QR check-in was compulsory!). Both had very infrequent update schedule (but Poco is much more intolerable since, you know, MAJOR BUGS!). I had enough of the Xiaomi products and never ever I dare to buy even their premium flagship.
