When did I become a Rough Ryder Hypster

I was collecting Rough Riders before it became popular! What happened? When I did I become a Rough Rider Hispter? Or is that Rough Ryder Hypster?
Was it the "Slant R" bolster? or was the name change? Maybe it was the introduction of the Rough Ryder Reserve? Or was it just the lack of patterns that I tend to collect. I don't know? but for some reason I'm drawn to the earlier pre-big R, pre Y patterns.

I started off with modern budget flippers, and while they are a useful tool and fun to play with, they lack the beauty, the history, the heft and the bajillion patterns of traditionals. I love Rough Ryder's because I was able to get a bunch of traditional pattern knives for little money. I don't know how many I have of them. My favorite tang stamp from them is the horseshoe with the crazy cowboy in the middle. It adds a western flair to the knife. Of all the Roughies I've bought, I have never returned one. Some had issues, but nothing I couldn't fix, or live with.

Oh, also on the Upswept bow Trapper, the newer Red one has a slightly larger blade stock & a noticeably stronger pull than the black handled one. I think they redesigned the knife because most people reviewing the knife said it had a weak pull. Not bad, but weak. If I had a trigger pull gauge I could measure the difference. I'd rate the black as a 3 or 4, and the red as a solid 5.
@AndyArmstrong
@AndyArmstrong 3 жыл бұрын
You're right. A new pattern release almost always improves on a second run because of the customer experience and actual field use. While the blade stock should be exactly the same (maybe a tiny bit different), we definitely asked for the pull to be stronger on the second edition (as well as the next production round of the first release). Good eye.

I just got the RR2220 Tiger Stripe Scout Knife and it has some "Flaws" that are simply "Characteristics". The blade does not line up exactly with the line of the grip when opened (odd-looking but actually helps with my carpal tunnel issues) and there is rub between it and the can-opener. This is the same frame as the Dave Canterbury Scout and the Marbles Orange Scout (MR592) and the larger size fits my hands better than smaller ones (I wear a 2XL glove and they are tight on me) Also the monster can opener is super-proud and rides way high, so I Dremelized it on the chin so it seats properly. I see all this as part of the program. Like horse manure being part of having horses. Still love my RRs!

I own 86 Rough Ryders and I've snapped PLENTY of fingernails on some of my subpar Rough Ryders, where the pulls is a 9.5 or 10. I haven't had the same issues with Marbles with very rough pulls and super gunky oil. I also had a bad Rosecraft traditional knife, where I needed a pliers to pull the blade out. Andy gave me a replacement knife.

Marble's and Rough Ryder's are made in the same factory. While the Marble's TM is owned by a company other than SMKW, they are made under license by SMKW in their Rough Ryder Factory. I have no experience with RoseCraft but from what I understand they are made in the same factory as the Rough Ryder Reserve knives. It has been my experience that strong pulls are more often associated with patterns than brands. PS, I like your little Kitty MEME! Very cute!

One of the first things you need to learn when you start using and collecting slip joint knives is learning how to use one. They are not made to flip open like about every modern locking design is. It takes understanding how they are made to work. If you want avoid blade rub don’t open the blade incorrectly. If you lift the blade straight up and don’t drag the blade across the other blade you don’t mark the blades. If you use your use your thumb and first finger to open the blade you don’t push the blade against the other blades. If you can take a slip of paper and it slides between all the blades; blade rub is no fault of the knife. If you get blade rub marks it is your fault; you just need to be careful opening a multiplied blade pocket knife over a single blade knife. Traditional pocket knives are like learning to drive a standard shift car. They are harder to learn to use than an automatic transmission. Rough Rider knives let people with less money collect pocket knives. Kids and young people can learn about the fun of collecting knives. They also learn how handy carrying a knife is. If you took all the name brands; off knives; wonder what ones people would pick more often? Thank you for all the fun information about pocket knives you provide. You are a great advocate for the knife collecting community. Ramble all you want; I like it.

Good to hear someone not getting up the pole about a bit of blade rub and such like on a knife that doesn't cost a lot but gives a lot for the cost. I have a few Rough Riders and bought the first ones some ten years ago, I think. One has had the scale on one side come off and one of the tiny scale pins went AWOL, but I can glue it back on when I get a Round Tuit. Otherwise, no problems. they deserve praise for giving good value knives for those who can't afford the more expensive knives and don't deserve the criticism when being compared to something three, four or more times the price. Sorry... I'm rambling on, aren't I? I'll get my coat.... {:o)

I've had the occasional scale pop off a knife. When it happens on an inexpensive knife, I just sigh, and glue/pin it back on. When it happens to an expensive knife, I do a little cursing and swearing and then glue/pin it back on. I've have been more impressed with low priced budget knives more so than expensive knives. Yeah, I know. Blasphemy.

@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 3 жыл бұрын
The first two numbers fall somewhere between the design date and/or expected release date. So it gives a rough approximation. The early three digit numbers are from the 2000’s . So RR533 is from atriums 2004-2006. Around 2000, it seems they reboxed, and relaunched the RR brand . So some othe earlier knives were numbered . But it seems this is when the brand really took off. Interesting enough, RR001 was a survival whistle. Several modern style knives were also among the 001-100 knives. Also not every number is used every year.

Agreed the Big r does nothing in way of quality or even cost savings for production matter of fact if anything it cost them more money to stamp that R into the bolsters and if you ask me I think it makes them look cheap, I mean more so than they are already cuz without it they actually don't even look cheap at all that's how traditional eyes are supposed to be they're not supposed to really have a bunch of names and words and branding and logos all over them or be all bright and loud, imo traditional lives are supposed to be subtle and gentlemany classy. I'm totally with you on that one it's not like something like bitching about the blade being on center that is something that may take up more time and all that for them to do, no the R they go out of their way to make and it looks worse. But to each his own i suppose that's the beauty of $10 knife there's one for everybody! Nice videos Man
@AndyArmstrong

It's interesting to me that one of the most serious judgements of a slip joint knife in the modern era has become blade centering. I think this largely comes from the introduction of modern folding knives (especially flippers) and how they must be aligned almost perfectly while closed to function properly. I don't believe that this was nearly as important to slip joint buyers before the era of the modern folder. In fact, having walked many shows and looked at old knives from the manufacturers that we now consider "masters" of the craft, I've found many blades that were slightly askew while closed or didn't lay perfectly in the channel. In my opinion, it's far more important for a slip joint to open smoothly, lay in perfect contact at the joint (no gaps, no misalignment in the open position), and to NOT be askew or have play in the cutting position. If the blade is not touching a liner or another blade and meets the above three qualities, then I consider it to be an excellent slip joint, regardless of whether the blade lays perfectly centered in the channel - and that's because it's functioning exactly as it should with no issues that would cause long term damage or failure in the use of the knife. In my opinion, modern users have come to think blade centering is the end all be all, when it really isn't the mark we should be looking for to determine knife quality. Nice video, Tobias, you "hypster" you. Keep your eyes open for a bone stag version of my upswept bow trapper. I will neither confirm nor deny that one is in the works right now. ;)

I don't really have a problem with RR knives...I have a problem with the "less than functional knives" SMKW allows to be shipped out without a simple general check, every single knife I have ever bought from them have had major issues.

I’m going to complain about not being able to get at nail nicks on 2 knives I’m a row now for me, camper and the denim Barlow. Going to get the belt sander out now. Shouldn’t have to even for a $20 knife. Some engineer should be able to see the chronic issues with this.

I have a couple of dozen RRs, if I could find the ones I want that will ship to Spain, I would have more. I bought my first RRs over ten years ago, still going strong. I an waiting for a blue denim half hawk to arrive this week, can't wait for that, they are a great design. I have a black Upswept trapper, love the T10 steel but the action is too soft. When are you gonna grow a little hipster ponytail?

The newer Upswept bow Trapper in Red has a stronger back spring, and a slightly larger blade stock.

@@WilliamsKnifeLife Cheers. That's good to know the red looks nice, I can feel a purchase coming on.

@@WilliamsKnifeLife I just picked up the last red trapper from the eBay seller I use.

@@chrisosh9574 Great. I hope you like it. I didn't have a problem with the weaker pull on the black one, but it's a perfect pull on the red one. I only have one example, but it looks like they tried, successfully, to increase the pull strength.

@@WilliamsKnifeLife Yeah, I read a couple of the reviews at SMKW and they said the pull is fairly strong, I don't have a problem using the black trapper and I like the T10 on it, a strong pull is just a personal preference. Especially for the fidget factor!

I like the Horseshoe on the bolster better . The big R is kind of tacky

I couldn't help but notice that you broke the nail of your right thumb from opening the knives. I have a new stockman RR that the smaller blades are impossible for me to open without a tool. The spring is way to powerful to open making those blades useless. I have bought another stockman of the same style and size that has much easier to open blades without a tool or breaking my fingernails off!

Not from opening these knives. I have video coming up soon that will explain that thumb nail. (Yeah, I did something stupid! 😂)

THANK YOU TOBIAS for explaining to these idiots how to open a Barlow. Been annoying me to no end the imagined issue with this. “JUST GET IN THERE AND OPEN IT!” Again, THANKS!!!! Always can count on you for telling it like it is. Even though I think Zi might be a fan of the Big R. 👍🏼😁🔪

I also don't like the R bolsters and don't like swedges.

I think we are in agreement there. Swedges do have a place but that place is not on every blade! The Big R is just over used and ugly.

@@KnifeChatswithTobias I'm just picky, I also don't like the half-stops on most knives and the double match strikes on one blade. I like my traditional slipjoints to be as like they were in the hay days of slipjoints, basic and simple with not to many features.
