The only way in which Robert was a bad king was that he didn’t care for being a king. He was diplomatic, very strategic and an excellent combatant. His ultimate downfall (aside from the Lannisters) was not applying himself when he was king

Robert Baratheon was one of the most brilliant wartime strategist Westoros ever saw. He won constant victories, which inspired neutral lords to come forward to his support. He defeated Rhaegar, a brilliant knight himself. Most causal fans just see him as a fat drunk who died early, but in his prime he was the ultimate giga Chad.

Cersei wasn’t dumb though. Just because she’s a morally corrupt person and you dislike her doesn’t mean that she’s dumb. Yes you’re probably right that she isn’t as smart as she thinks she is, but no one would have gotten away with as much as Cersei has if they weren’t smart. Cersei was manipulative, cunning and calculated most of the time within both the show and the book, although on a few occasions she let her ego and pride get to her and so she underestimated others which inevitably came back to bite her later on. I also disagree Robert is smarter than Cersei, Robert is definitely smarter than Cersei gives him credit for because like i said, Cersei has a habit of underestimating people, but I wouldn’t say he’s smarter than Cersei.

@@FirstnameLastname-zq8oy analyzing the scenes of the show I would say Robert definitely was brighter than Cersei and this one scene is a prime example. Cersei is easily the dumbest Lannister.

Yet he was a guy who only lost in his whole life and even in that he was outnumbered by over 70000. His wins on the other hand include battle of gulltown, 3 seperate battles of summerhall all in a single day, battle of bells, battle of trident and seige of greyjoy's castle. His only loss came against reach in battle of Ashford which was also the only rebel's lost a battle in the war. Which cannot be said about other well known lords who have all more battles than him with Ned being exception who has less battles than him with him not talking part in any battle until battle of bells in the rebellion and only extra battle was tower of joy.

Exactly the prime example of “He’s a genius but lazy”. He was also so caught up in the dream of Lyanna and what HE wanted he didn’t know what he had. Cersei was considered if not the most, then most certainly one of the most beautiful women in Westeros. She also was pretty smart politically, not on par with her father or (season 1-5) Tyrion. If Robert had let go of Lyanna after her death and embraced Cersei, then they would have been THE power couple.

Genius, I don't know. He was good at one thing, as a commander, but failed to adapt to the circumstances around him. He was more of a "practical genius", who had the ability to inspire and read the common people's needs. Fascinating how this exact conversation in Season 1 foretells Cersei’s fall in the Season 8. Prior to the destruction of King’s Landing, all it took was for Dany, and her armies of Northmen, Unsullied and Dothraki to breach the city walls and the before the Bells rang for surrender. Cersei was holed up in the Red Keep, confident in her weapons and the money she paid people, but when the walls fell away, the people abandoned their Absentee Queen. Depends on an open field you could have a lot of ballistae it would depend on the the element of surprise the wisest move would be to lure dragons into a mountainous region where many many trebuchets and ballistae waited this way when the army following the dragons, would line up to be shot by superior range and poor visibility dragons would have to constantly dodge aerial attacks that may, may not hit but this would be better then a wall defense where is scout able and all siege defense would be destroyed by dragons and then you have 0 air defense.

This scene makes me sad we didn’t get more of Robert, both in show and novel, because it gives us a glimpse of the man who could inspire armies and loyalty. When you break things down, Khal Drogo's khalasar of 40000 wouldn't had beaten the combined forces of Westeros. Maybe if Dorne joins them and they can convince the Iron Islands or better yet the Reach to rebel. Robert would've had the Stormlands, the North, Westernlands and the River lands at the very least to build up an army. And they would've consisted of some of the best political/military minds on the continent.

I know we're only a couple of episodes in but the acting in HotD has a tough challenge of matching the acting we saw in GoT. The way the actors completely submerged themselves into their roles is something you don't always come across and certainly something some actors struggle with. Sometimes I feel I'm watching people act, but in GoT I felt I was watching people in another world live their genuine lives.

ik the scene is to tell is just how intelligent Robert was when it came to strategies but this also shows me how Cersei, from the beginning, is a narcissist and thinks in the end it’ll all work out because of past experiences. Every time someone tells her of an outside threat, Renly Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, Daenerys before she came to Westeros and after she arrived, she acted like it was nothing. Like Kings Landing would be fine and she’d remain queen. Cersei says she’s not as respected because she’s a woman, that’s not entirely true, she’s not respected because she has no real clue what’s happening out there or how to properly act against it. She doesn’t know how war is fought, she doesn’t know anything about the Iron Bank, and she didn’t know how badly her enemies would have retaliated when she did horrible things to them.
@1313fina

I don't know about Jaime and Tyrion (especially Tyrion), but Cersei strikes me as the kind of woman who only knows how to play her "inner palace games". She only sees the fight for the Iron Throne as a game. She never once considered what one was supposed to do once in the seat. Once the dust settles and you need to worry about the harvest to replenish the granary and taxes to replenish the coffers, that's when the real work begins.

Robert Baratheon is a great example of the curse of the soldier. You train your entire life to be a warrior and once you go to war and finally win, everything stops. There’s nothing to fight anymore. You crave the battle, but it’s not there. Everything you’ve ever known, gone. All you have are your war stories and the people you fought alongside with. All you have are the people you fought for, but it’s not enough. You’ve seen the brutality of what a man can do to another man. Once it’s quiet, the only war that’s left is in your mind.

Cersei's all schemes and power plays. She has no real leadership or administrative talents like her father and youngest brother along with a weak grasp of grand strategy, which Jaime, surprising for a guy who hates politics, is actually better at than her. All her plays win her power in the short term, but later come to bite her back. The show started effing up when the writers stopped bad things happening to Cersei for Cersei's dumb decisions.
