Thankyou . We are novices and bought chickens about 6 weeks ago and at the time they were already about 6 weeks old and the folks we bought from reckoned they would be ready about now , so obviously that is incorrect . Will just need to be more patient I guess .

Feeding magnolia crushed flowers (found at most local feed stores) not only makes the yolks a tad darker, it makes for wonderful flavor in both the egg & the chicken (later when they are ready to be eaten). Magnolia also has natural bacteria fighting enzymes that aid in warding off some illnesses.

I never knew how loving chickens are. I had a henny penny that i found in my back yard and she became my baby. I woke up every morning at 530 6am to let her out of her cage feed her and bond with her for a few hours. I even had a lil song i use to sing to her 😊 i knew she liked it cus she would move her mouth but no noise lol it was cute. I never had a chicken let alone knew how to take care of 1. She was like a baby and had to feed her make sure she had water every 2 hours. Everytime she would see me she would run to me to greet me. She was spoiled lol 1 day i had just came inside from feeding her and making sure she was ok. I had went outside and i startled a hawk. It had got my baby and i was so heart broken. I cried for days and she honestly broke my heart. She was a wild chicken and i only had her a chicken coop where she slept other then that she was free and was always by my window peeking in on me lol she even use to chase the cats lol i regret not having her in a big chicken coop or at least had her a rooster to take care of her. She was and still is my 1 and only baby chicken 💜

Thank you so much for this!! First time chicken owner and my Americana hen just laid her first couple eggs and I seen she goes a day or two before another and have been searching on why and if I should be concerned, so this helped sooooo much especially knowing my RIR is almost ready bc she just started squatting which being a fist time owner thought it meant they were scared or wanted to be petted 🤣, so thanks again I got my answers!

Thanks so much for the great info! We’re new chicken owners, have 3 ISA Browns 18 weeks and got our first egg today! Saw one squatting this morning, her comb and waddle is a bit bigger than the others so pretty sure was her. Was unexpected since I’ve read this breed lays at around 20-22 weeks. Found her egg on the ground in the run so I’ll buy ceramic eggs, thanks for the tip! Wishing you and your family a happy weekend 😊🐔

Your daughter is not only beautiful, she's very smart. A healthy looking flock of chickens. I have a hen that is trying to hatch a golf ball. I keep getting in her way though because I have no rooster. A oak snake ate my ceramic egg, thus the golf ball. We didn't see him take the egg, but a snake is the only creature that could squeeze through the wire holes, plus the coup and run is under several large oak trees.

Question: I plan on using limestone grit/sand/gravel in the chicken run. When the chickens take up the grit into their gizzard to grind their food, some of the limestone will dissolve due to stomach acid. That should help with shell formation. What do you think?
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience Жыл бұрын
Should be good but they may need different forms of calcium for shell development.

GREAT VIDEO. When do they start eating whole grain feed? Mine started laying this week, but still only eat small chick starter?

Thank you. You can give them scratch grains now just make sure they have access to grit or an outside run.

@@CountryLivingExperience My bar rock hen is 9 weeks and is laying. Video is full of useful information. My hens have an outside run, very sandy, They go for grit when I put it in the henhouse. Do I need to provide it still?

I live in an apartment but my goal is to someday have chickens. My Dad was 60 when I was growing up and he was always at home. But we had a garden with chickens and we kept rabbit and used their pellets to fertilize the grass. My dad came up with crazy ideas. He had a shed where he grew tomatoes year round. He ate tomatoes at every meal. Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Made great snacks too. I was lucky to be exposed to this life style.

What if you didn’t block off the nesting boxes? Should I now and of course clean the boxes? Mine are about 12 weeks
@CountryLivingExperience
@CountryLivingExperience 11 ай бұрын
If you don't block off the boxes, they will roost in there and poop. Then when they start laying eggs, you will have a mix of poop and eggs. Keep it blocked until they are ready.

Most chickens don't lay every day. Some of the best layers only lay between 250 to 300 eggs per year.

We started with 6 chicks, ended up with 5 hens and 1 rooster. We also blocked 6 nests, but once they started laying, they all used the same 2 nests. Our next bunch of babies might fill in the empty nests.
