When Do I Water My Japanese Maple?

Japanese maples require careful watering to thrive. They prefer to dry out completely between watering sessions and can suffer from phytophthora root rot if left in consistently soggy conditions. Key to their health is good drainage; avoid using saucers that retain water and ensure containers have proper drainage. In winter, water less frequently but be sure to do so after freeze-thaw cycles to help recovery. During summer, adjust watering based on sun exposure and soil type, as well as the plant’s stage of growth. Containers need more attention as the root ball expands. The finger test is a simple yet effective method to check soil moisture. Always tailor watering practices to your specific climate and soil conditions, and remember that Japanese maples do not thrive in constantly damp conditions.

Many of the pots I found for my JM's had the built in saucers. I remedied this by drilling holes on the bottom. For ceramic/clay pots I used masonry drill bits as standard won't work. Thanks for the video.

I use a water gauge. I got tired of sticking my finger in pots. When I got a water gauge, it was a game changer. My trees have loved me for it and it makes my job of taking care of them easier.

Hey guys, how about a video on properly planting a maple in the ground, especially NC red clay? I lost a beautiful emerald lace that I let grow out in a pot for one season and did awesome and last spring planted in the ground it did ok for a while than declined quickly after July and the bark started to turn black in spots and it was dead by the end of august. I planted it 2 inches above grade, made sure it was watered properly and was mulched properly. Maybe needed to be planted even higher?
@briano9879
@briano9879 2 жыл бұрын
Hopefully you get an answer from the experts but you may need to dig a deeper hole to help with drainage in clay. I usually do this with everything in GA as a cheap insurance policy. I'll mix the soil with pine bark mulch and backfill until I get the rootball to the desired height. I dug a bunch of holes before it rained on time and they all held water for different periods. Some drained within hours while one took also two days and I have no idea why.
@andydzieciaszek586
@andydzieciaszek586 2 жыл бұрын
@@briano9879 I did the same, I've seen some people suggest to basically plant it almost on top of the ground and then mound dirt around the root ball. I used plenty of pine bark soil conditioner when I planted it. Maybe its just a bad spot.I lost a viridis in that same spot the season before, it just never came back after the winter, that one I bought from Lowes and thought it was maybe just a bad plant, but the emerald lace from the brothers was growing so vigorously before I put it in the ground.

Thanks for all of the information. I received a JM a few days ago and my instinct was to water it right after it got planted. However, now it's raining non stop for the whole day. Should I put some kind of plastic around it to prevent it from watered from the rain? I already see some leaves drying out and dying. However, I planted it under a large maple tree so hopefully the larger tree will act like an umbrella for the tree that I planted.

Great video! Also, don’t plant your new maples from their liner into too big of a container. It will hold too much water. I’ve got a few of mine whose roots hadn’t quite filled out their liners planted liner and all in the bigger container. As their roots expand to fill the liner, I eventually will remove it and plant them directly into the container itself. Love your videos and your maples!

Great video. Being involved in bonsai now for 5 yrs understanding watering and ur climate and ur soil contents really counts. Every tree I got from u guys I usually slip pot up a size take some soil away put some home depot small river rocks on the bottom and mix Scott's container soil with pumice and some akadama in their and its a great medium for NYC where I live. It's a very free draining soil and the trees are really growing fast! Be cautious though container soil will hold alot of water. I have my trees in the shed now and I can tell the soil is still moist I just leave them alone. Thanks guys keep the knowledge coming! Oh one question I asked before can I air layer above the grafts will the maples do ok on their own roots or will some struggle more than others? Thanks
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 2 жыл бұрын
They may struggle. Some types will be much harder than others to root. I don’t recommend airlayers on smaller plants but only mature ones in the ground to mitigate stress.

I live in Atlanta GA and I recently planted a Viridis Japanese maple in a rock garden in full sun (approximately 6 hrs per day). It seems to be doing well after just a few weeks. I placed some mulch around the roots to help retain some of the moisture. How often do you suggest I water it? I have a sprinkler system that waters it for about 20 min. three times per week. Should I just continue to finger test it throughout the week to make sure it’s watered properly?
@MrMapleShow

That should do very well. Check the water to make sure it’s not staying soggy and you should be good

Great video guys. I live in So Cal - Zone 10B. Is it a good idea to place potted Japanese Maples on a bed of gravel instead of the saucer? I have so far two maples from you that i purchased this winter. I can’t wait to see them leaf out in the Spring. Thanks!
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 2 жыл бұрын
Great Question. I would say so, but be careful of rock in the sun. I have seen trees baked from the rocks. It’s always good to try it out and give it the finger test. As long as you pay attention and are responsive to what the tree is telling you, you can learn what can work best in your environmental conditions

@@MrMapleShow I will do a bit of an experiment and report back. One tree will be in a pot with no tray and small risers. The other tree will be on a small bed of pea gravel. After the first flush of growth and then compare the two trees and their root growth.

Another great video! Questions. I've watched practically all of your videos on Japanese Maple, I still can't figure out what is wrong with my tree. For the last few years, I noticed right after winter, the tree come to life with great green leafs. Unfortunately, that lasted only till June when a lot of the leaves starts turning brown and die off. I have tried using measurement tool to measure the water level and PH level, nothing seems to be working. RIght now, I have watering the plan once a week. What other suggestions can you give me? Many thanks!

Hi. I live in Central Virginia, Zone 7b. Bought one of your Crimson Queens and I intend to grow it for a few years in a container in an area that gets a mix of sun and shade all day during the growing season, leaning on the shadier side. While it's dormant right now how far down in it's container should I go to determine if the soil is dry enough to require watering? Do you recommend anything in terms of soil amendments besides potting soil? What size container do you recommend for a 3 gal. tree?

Hey we have a video on soil and fertilizer also :) we should have one very soon on pot size but the gist of it is don’t to big to fast for best growth. I would say about an inch or two is good to see how damp. Thanks for watching!

Hi love this video! I received a 10 year Mai Kujaku a week ago. It was left in a plastic bag in a wheelbarrow full of water for 3 weeks. Obviously the tree has suffered. I dried the root ball for three days and then planted it into a pot. I live in Portland OR and we are having record rain. I’m wondering if it would be wise to put it on the porch and let it dry out completely? I don’t want to let this beautiful tree die and know it’s chances aren’t great but I would love any advice from you or the community. Thank you!
@MrMapleShow
@MrMapleShow 2 жыл бұрын
I would get it in the ground as soon as you can for its best shot. Good drainage is the key. It’s also not ideal to move one in leaf and disturb the rootball. I would get it in the ground and try superthrive and or a light liquid fertilizer like Miracle Grow to see if it will rebud
