Bought my D-18 in 1973 new. Heavily used for decades. In 2016, it needed a neck reset and the bridge re-glued. I was having big time tuning/intonation issues. I also had it re-fretted. About 1/2 of that cost was covered under the Martin lifetime warranty. They still had my Serial Number on file after 43 years Left it at the factory in Nazareth for 4 long months. Best $340 (for the new D-18) I ever spent. Still play it at least 1 hour everyday, solid 2 hours on Mondays at my bluegrass band practice/jam, and 2-4 hours a month when we gig out. Nothing I've tried sounds as full. Most of the expensive new guitars are sweet in treble, but lack the fullness at bass notes. You have to keep it humidified and avoid extreme temperatures. I have another guitar that I use in those conditions..

Hi Mark. How can the action be high with a low saddle? I love your videos, a lot of learning even though I don't have the room or tools to fix important issues, at least I can check my guitar and be sure the work has been done properly 👍🎶🎶🎶

Good question! It is the relentless pull of the strings "24/7 .... 365" that gradually pull the neck up .... until it requires removal and re-setting. The only recourse ( other than removing the neck ) is to lower the saddle to drop the action down. Michael

@@StringTechWorkstations Thanks Michael (sorry calling you Mark). I get it. I forgot about the tension and the neck bow. 🎶🎶🎶

maybe I can try that trick where you cut slots to increase the tension, I got some estate left, and might just get it perfect that way. I got 2 saddles now, one is a bit higher than the other, but when I put on the lower one, I get unwanted fretbuzz. probably because it's slightly too low, thus reducing that tension because of the angle being to shallow

I have a Martin D-41 coming in for a neck re-set. I'll address your questions in that video. I understand the reluctance to pull the neck off of a beautiful Martin guitar ... But ... eventually .... it does get to a point where it is inevitable ... MMcC

That DX1AE is a completely different neck joint than the typical D-28 ( Dovetail ) ..... that has a tenon in mortise neck joint that is bolted on .... heat up and remove the wooden plate on the headblock ( with the wood burnt ) Martin Logo. This will give you access to the fastener.

I just want to point out that Martin has at times over-compensated for any future problems that might be caused by the upward bowing of the neck (which can cause the action to be so high as to require the bridge itself, not to mention the saddle to be shaved absurdly low) by installing the neck with a backward bow ("negative relief") causing immediate buzzing and such low action as to require the saddle to be wedged up absurdly high just to make the guitar barely playable in the first position. IMO, the neck should initially be set in straight. The pull of the strings should be just enough to provide a little positive relief, with the truss rod adjustment fine tuning the string height above the frets in the the first to middle portion of the fretboard (the highest part of the fretboard's string clearance being controlled by fine tuning the saddle, if necessary).

@@StringTechWorkstations Mike, out of curiosity-any experience on using evo gold 5590 on a late 50's D-28? I'm ready for a second re fret. Probably my last in my lifetime. Incidentally-I have no complaints against nickel frets. Ty
