When EXPENSIVE Audio Gear Ends Up Being The WRONG Purchase (And Why That's OK)
Why Audio Gear Shaming Is SO Stupid ..
Audient Evo 16 vs Apollo x6
My name is Paul Third and I am a Scottish youtuber / audio engineer / mixing engineer / audio geek. I mostly cover audio engineering related content ranging from audio plugin shootouts / plugin comparisons (acustica audio plugins, universal audio etc etc) to actual analog vs digital / gear vs plugins plugin tests via access analog and mix analog. I even include ddmf plugindoctor tutorials in my plugin reviews so you can be your very own plugin tester and experiment and understand whats actually going on under the hood.
All of my content is produced in Presonus studio one 6 which is my main daw and in terms of my audio interface I record and monitor through a universal audio apollo x6 through topping dx7 pro+ dac/amp and use a Lauten Atlantis for all of my voice overs.

Dope vid! Forget what people think about your gear, focus on what people think of your work. That’s what keeps us working at the end of the day (engineers, producers & artists). Heck my most radio successful mixes were done on passive Alesis monitors with a hifi amp to power them 😂. Whatever gets the job done mate. And sweeeeet looking studio!

You have so many useful vids. Glad I found you (through the @APMastering drama)! This year, it was finally time, as a Mac-based studios, to walk away from my precious RME FireFace. I entertained many really high-end interfaces, but ultimately landed on the SSL 12. It's shockingly affordable, while not skimping on the things that really matter. I do miss the full rack-style setup with so many I/O methods, and the desktop box shape can get physically awkward-with cables needing to dangle over my desk often. But the tone and performance is, in some ways, better than the RME-at almost 1/10th the cost. Plus, I'm now in the SSL ecosystem and seriously looking at getting at least one of their UF controllers. Great vid man!

Very useful for me. Thinking of the same. Not same, not running studio. Just few synths for fun. Too many synth and I don't need Twin X, not using DSP, native work better and unlimited Mac Studio Ultra. I think can flip UAD to EVO 16, connect all my synths .................... and shove it into EMPTY 19" rack LOL ..... I hear you - why rack is empty, real struggle :)

don’t even like the LA2A. The long second release stage is just too long. One stray transient and the thing it’s compressing takes a whole bar to come back. So you need to put another compressor in front of it, Which can probably just do the job by it self. And if you want the warmth of the line and well, use the lineup Just my opinion, will concede that probably a million hit records that has used it extensively

Great video, man. I've been looking at the Audients as my next purchase. I'm currently using two sets of Behringer UMC404s. They're totally fine, but it is a little bit of a hassle setting up and maintaining an aggregate device on my mac each time I want to record. Now, I'm not a professional, I just record me and my friends playing drums/bass/guitar respectively - 6 mics on drums and DI'd Bass and Guitar to be reamped later. It works, but the Audient's workflow just seems so much easier. Then I look at something like the Focusrite Clarett + and on paper, its specs are better. I keep telling myself, this will get you to the next level, but its $1,000 vs $500 for the Audient. I think you talked me out of buying the Focusrite if I do upgrade. I've watched videos on the software for both and focusrites seems more cumbersome to work with which at the end of the day, is going to lead to less music and less fun making it.

Eds done countless interface comparisons and always swears by the audient pre's vs focusrite. Kristian kohles shootout of evo 16 vs api/ssl should be enough proof that it's £400 well spent Tbh I actually prefer the evo pre's over the ID pre's as they are cleaner

I don't mind being a little big headed in saying that I often get better results with my laptop, UMC204HD, Sennheiser HD206's & Cubase 12 Pro than many people with tens of thousands invested in equipment. I've never got the gear shaming thing, the most important product is the end product. If it sounds good, does it matter where it was recorded or what equipment was used 🤘

I've been guilty of gear shaming, yet I've always thought of Audient as a professional grade company. I worked at Westlake Studios in the '90s then opened my own place in 2001. When people ask if I have Neumann microphones, I say yes & ask which one they like. When a client comes in, I might grab the AA C800 clone or the Warm 67. The WA67 is 99% on point w/the vintage U67. The finished product & a pleasant experience are the things people remember. Most new clients notice our acoustic design, lighting & the nice smell (seriously) before they look at the gear. This tactic would never work with Voice Over or Film clients. I always use what they request. That's usually the U87ai. If they insist on something you don't own, just rent it.

About a year and a half ago I went full on Audient for my tracking. EVO16, SP8 and ASP800. Haven't regretted it one second. Much cheaper than previous setups I've had, but I swear my stuff sounds better these days - and I think a big part of it is I now spend a lot less time troubleshooting and can focus a lot more on doing the things I should be doing.. Always been a big fan of brands that do good quality for sensible money, Audient is definitely one of those. Unsurprisingly I also own plenty of Yamaha instruments. ;)

Great Video, I too am constantly wrestling with what Gear. will actually make a big difference versus what the Internet tells me I need. Slightly off topic but you seem like the guy to ask. Adat! Is it’s a third-party technology that has the same quality across different brand interfaces, or do different brands implement it differently with varying results. For instance is Behringer Adat different to RME Adat, for example?
@PaulThird
@PaulThird 2 ай бұрын
It's just passing a digital signal. As far as I know doesn't matter if it's behringer or RME, the digital signal will stay in tact
@TheNickmeeks1
@TheNickmeeks1 2 ай бұрын
@@PaulThird so the Adat converting ones and zeros to light on and off and back again. So I guess then you are at the mercy of the AD/DA Quality of the unit. Though I am looking at my RME specs and it does post lower Quality specs for jitter amongst other things across adat compared to its own conversion. Which suggests that maybe Adat has a ‘quality bottleneck’
@PaulThird
@PaulThird 2 ай бұрын
Digital to digital doesn't change the sound, especially not in interfaces. The SP8 ADAT will take the already converted digital signal and send it to the recieving interface which then transfers that to the computer over USB or thunderbolt. ADAT, spdif, USB, there are no changes in sound as it's there is no conversion. It's no different to the computer taking the digital signal and sending it to your interface over USB. The interface is what does the conversion. The ADAT is simply a digital transfer

Perfect advice! I had an EVO SP8 loan unit for a review and Audient also sent through an EVO 16 to pair it with. Couldn't believe what was possible for the price given that the build and UI were as good as an interface I'd previously tested that cost 10 times more than the EVO 16. And hardware works best on the way in as it won't get killed off in a software update. Did you buy any further 500-series preamps aside from the GAP? (The DAV and Cranborne are also great choices for different colours at a similar price). Oh - when's the U87 arriving..?!

The simple, unavoidable fact is that what sounds the best or works the best is what you need. The marketing people and other engineers/musicians with egos to stroke will try to convince you otherwise, but you know what's right for your setup. This happens to me just about every time I buy something or release new material. I bought a 7 string bass and had boomers crying that it was unnecessary, not a real bass, I was going to return it after making one song, etc. I'm nearly two albums deep with it as my primary bass. I use Superior Drummer 3 because I don't have the space, gear, or knowledge to record real drums, and I get people critiquing that frequently. Oh the feel is ruined, it doesn't sound real, blah blah blah, and yet those same people always ask "is this still SD3?" Well...if you have to ask, it must be doing a good job, yeah? The opinions of other people don't matter whatsoever, that's what I've found in my years making music.

The time I've spent is just silly and I simply can't take any more sh*tty drivers so just upgraded to a Babyface, which is definitely higher grade than I really need. We need to, in general, be careful with what we say to people. That is especially important if we're talking to people that are beginners or a little past beginners. Why ruin someone's thing? Is someone not very good at guitar? It doesn't matter, just give people some support. If you say "you suck", that could ruin someone's hobby or make it less fun to do the thing they like. Digital pianos don't sound right. Luckily Pianoteq actually sounds like real piano, if that sound is needed, and midi solves that issue. In many cases a piano'ish sound, is fine, so a digital piano, or one of the myriads of sampled pianos that do not resonate right, works fine. Unfortunately, most digital pianos do not feel right. So depending on who is playing, that can be an issue. Kawai has great action on some of their models, and they even have some with soundboards, so the sound is projected more realistically in the room (thought since they don't have actual strings, the string resonance isn't accurate), but to get that better key-feel you have to pay more. Kawai also have the VPC-1 that feels right, but that is only a controller, so it would not be ideal in a recording room. But many players are used to digital pianos or controllers that don't actually feel lika a real piano, some are even quite used to not having even a weighted feel, as they mostly play on other types of keys. But besides the tuning issues, an acoustic piano can also resonate with sound in the room, and thus impact the recording by generating sounds. So I would not put an acoustic piano in a recording space, unless it can be wheeled out (but that can make the tuning issue worse). I don't think a acoustic piano would ever be right for that studio. Ed Sheeran does not use a full sized guitar, I am quite sure. And the Fender acoustasonic range does not have full bodies, but can produce a very useful tone. Guitars are portable, so if a guitar player needs something particular, they should bring it along. The biggest reason to have some really high quality instruments, is probably not really to impress established musicians, because they will prefer their own instrument, but it can be quite emotional for a young artist, to get access to a class of instrument they have never been able to experience. But that scenario isn't a selling point, as it mostly would not be the deciding factor. We should perhaps also expect singers to be able to bring their own microphones. it is a bit strange, that one. Some have a clear preference, but don't own one... But mostly, microphones are actually just down, to getting one with a good response and no resonance issues, and then apply EQ. There is a video of a guy that builds a mic cabinet, inspired by a specific studio, by mostly finding out how to EQ cheaper mics. My issue with that video is not that it disproves the myth of mics. But that he still feel the need to emulate a sound of another mic. I prefer the idea of EQ for the best result for the source, not copying the response curve of a classic mic. Also, a pitch tracking EQ can help you getting similar coloration all over the frequency spectrum (but both Sound Radix Surfer EQ and Antares Auto-Tune Vocal EQ are meant for monophonic sources). And most modern Interfaces and adat mic preamps, offer a clean sound, so you should have no issues getting a clean signal, although some can have issued driving some microphones, and an in-line preamp might be needed. Saturation can be problematic in software, but with a perfect recording, you can re-amp through a pre-amp with coloration, or any other type of nice saturation unit. But you can get good saturation out of software, as well, and one might not always be looking for that "analog saturation" sound anyway, and you definitely do not always need saturation. I wish others could match the RME latency performance. But the Digiface USB isn't that expensive, but requires external pre-amps and D/A converters (4 adat ins (that can be used in spdif mode) and 4 adapt outs (also with adat support), and only 1 headphone output that is of lesser quality than is expected from RME, also it doesn't have the typical software mixer effects of most other RME interfaces). Presonus Quantum used to have great latency performance, but they were thunderbolt, the new USB series is yet to be tested, they do say custom low latency driver, but I have my doubts that they can match those of RME. (Motu, I have seen inconsistent numbers from, at least their M-series) As long as you can impress your clients in the Atmos room, the speakers are fine. I feel 3 ways are more for critical decision about the mid range, than judging the over all sound. But I get that if you mix in the atmos room, the change in tone could in theory impact some decisions. But on the other hand, your clients will mostly likely never hear their songs again in a really well treated room, and they listeners will not, so going crazy about minute details is not worth the effort or cost of investment. But it is true that in some cases, in the recording industry, before you have made a name for yourself, people will care what you use. And some who have made a name for themselves have lost customers, when they have shifted their focus to software rather than large racks of hardware. So it can be a selling point. But starting out, you are very unlikely to have to money to make such investments, so it is not even wroth thinking about it. An if you have that kind of money, you are unlikely to make it back just by the clients you can get because of it, for whom it was important, so then it has to be seen as strictly a personal interest, and not really an investment in the studio.

I really like the IN5. For the price it's pretty much a no brainer. Arguably the best priced pair of monitors on the market. UNF has the best bass I've heard from a 3 way system. I think you'd struggle to get that anywhere else without a sub. But due to it being ultra nearfield the sound stage is limited to your specific sweetspot but they aren't bullshitting acoustics wise. If you are in a compromised space, you will get better acoustic results than a nearfield as it genuinely does counter for desk reflections. Basically flat in my room.

My take on buying expensive gear .. is it's about the thrill, about the imagined sound, the imagined feeling you'll get from using it, imagined .. day dreaming and feeling like you're the geezer for actually following through on those days dreams ( and not a looser for only ever dreaming, never doing, achieving them). But it's ultimately all surface level stuff and the thrill goes once it's arrived and on the rack .. Real satisfaction comes from personal progress in the actual work or creativity itself .. just can be hard to focus on it as it seems like a longer slog than a quick dopamine fix (i say that as someone with unmedicated ADHD and who's day dreaming is a dopamine fix in itself, buying the next fix. Fortunately i only buy second hand and can claw money back).

I dont know why I really wanted this in the first place haha However not everyone is like me who can dismiss things very quickly. I don't think that is limited to expensive gear, and it's too individual to make a blanket statement on. I have a pretty expensive system now and once I finished that I haven't gotten anything else, and I've never wished to, in the years that have passed since. I just feel content with what I have, as well as happy to be out of the loop of trying to look for other pieces of gear to see if I can do better (regardless of whether it's cheaper, equal or more expensive). It's not to say that I can't miss the days of carefully planning what I want to try out for purchase, but the feeling of being happy with what I have is still the better of the two. Obviously a lot of other people just keep changing their systems over time, but I don't think that's particularly connected to high end audio at all. It's the exact same base drive that causes people keep changing their systems over and over, regardless of budget. How much it costs is pretty irrelevant unless one is spending more than one can afford. It's all about getting that kick from something new and it does conflict with the ability to be content with what one has. It's of course up to each person to choose how to go about it, but everyone can benefit from taking a step back and looking at whether what they are doing is truly what they want.

Kawai E-Piano (Hybrid model for 3-4 k Price) sounds close to a grand piano without maintaining costs (you hear a gap to cheaper E-Pianos at the high keys - it's way richer). I thought about Atmos with Dangerous, but decided not to do it due to electricity - too much current is drawn. Presonus Electronic parts are not that great, but mostly better than Behringer. Universal Audio is really annoying (like SSL too) - these guys are thinking only about money and not what should be made. Stereo was forcing me to think about busses which was meaning I was kinda puting myself in a corner so I split them to mono and away from eachother on purpose . I totally feel you on this as both a windows and pro tools user. I have to close pro tools and restart, as well as fuck around even to change sample rates on a simple focusrite. The presonus will clip the converter before any noticeable saturation occurs. Which I record with a bit extra headroom than most. I like the workflow of choosing saturation and it not being choose for me. Plus I dig the integration with studio one. I never bashed him back because I’m not insecure about what I have. Believe me, I think I'm boring and thick as two short planks. But that's not how many others say they perceive me. And while I get the distinct impression (and I may be wrong) you're a little uncomfortable with how you'll be perceived in videos like this, I can tell you, you are incredibly interesting to listen to. There's sincerety in what/how you say and phrase things. I don’t think it’s stupid if it’s true, if someone brags about having the best studio and they have shit broken gear why wouldn’t I shame them?
@PaulThird
@PaulThird 2 ай бұрын
Cause it has no benefit to you whatsoever. If clients go to that studio and they are happy with the results, it just makes you look like a jealous little bitch. Id much rather take the approach of offering the clients my facilities and trying my best to showcase what I can offer rather than slating somebody else off. End of the day, cream rises to the top. If the gear is shit and broken then the records will sound shit and broken and that studio will end up with no business as word will spread. If it's got nothing to do with you and doesn't impact you in any way, then why are you wasting your time Shaming somebody online 🤷‍♂️ Also very subjective when you say broken. Broken as in not working as intended, or just completely not working? I've seen studios use "broken" gear and the record still turned out great. Its just pointless and a waste of energy man cause if you are really shit, then you'll get found out, it's just life. Let the clients slate the results cause that's all that really matters

3:17: What is "speaker conversion" ? You mean the Monitor L+R outputs? What's wrong with that? Not like "muddiness" what's actually off with it? Remember, you are a technical guy, who sticks to the hard facts supported by measurement. FYI even cheap audio interfaces don't have such issues and you did not seem to care clarifying it?

Well yes, DAC to Speakers is speaker conversion. DAC to ADC is Analog gear conversion. 2 different relationships and interaction with the DAC. You need to clarify exactly what you are moaning about here. There isnt a test I can accurately use to scientifically quantify what I hear in the apollo through speakers. DAC is a very very complex subject that is still being debated today. There is a different relationship with speakers and to measure what comes out the speakers I would really need something like an £11k neumann dummy head which would allow me to record the speakers in the room binaurally, which means I could run a headphone blind test with various engineers and test if the results are consistent. But all that will do is tell me that people genuinely can hear a difference via the DAC. It'll never explain what is causing the difference. Somebody like Dave Hill would have had a crack at it, guy from chord will have a theory but it's all things that are heavily debated. All I can say is that I wasn't happy with the x6 DAC to Speaker conversion, nor was I happy about the hp amp. It's a different "issue" I hear to the audient. Audient sounds more accurate than apollo but that haze I hear causes me to rely on the topping. It was frustrating cause it was a hassle selling x6 and swapping everything over to evo 16. Genuinely if the DAC to Speakers was high quality I wouldve kept the apollo but it was the last string for me along with all the other windows compromises Ed Thorne hears the same, MSM hears the same and many others have complained about it over the years as well. All I can tell you is that there is the same terminology that creeps up which is muddynes which is vague, but I dunno what it actually is, perhaps distortion based in the low mids, maybe IMD hump or something distortion based, impedance based, maybe the dsp architecture is causing an issue.. God knows, but all I can tell you is that I didn't like speakers and headphones through it, but you can obviously take that with a subjective grain of salt

@@PaulThird i don't see what makes "speaker" conversion different to a regular line level conversion. Apollo's Monitor outs are usually a bit higher specs than the others, but you can see this reflected only measured, you will not hear it. Digital conversion: this is a super simple subject, only people make difficult. You record the output of the Apollo X6 with its in, and if you can't tell the difference, then case closed (i'm sure the EVO checks this out too). Exactly like you do with your plugin ABs. You don't need a dummy head either. You use a proper mechanical AB switch or a monitor controller, and you'll be surprised to hear no difference between you fancy DAC and let's say a Focusrite Clarett. When people say they hear the difference of DACs in this category are usually subjects of improper blind A/B test. If you did your plugin reviews without Plugin doctor or without null test: that would be exactly the same. People would "hear" the difference. Spoiler: with proper test, people would fail telling the differences of the converters in this category. I did it many times, everyone who claimed to hear difference failed. No exception. This is how psychology works: we have expectations, we have bias, and we hear it happen even when it does not. The X6 has exceptional HP outputs compared to other interfaces, but i agree with you that a dedicated hp amp would beat it. The EVO is a great interface too, and suprisingly affordable. Features are insanely well thought, and thanks to pointing this out. The early runs had many failing units, but based on your video they probably sorted it out. And the X6 is definitely not for you, but it is still among the best converters money can buy right now. We have to give it that one. It outperforms our auditory systems easily. Or the speakers, which has distortion, FR figures magnitudes higher than the X6. If you hear mudiness: it is you. Or: if you heard a difference of your EVO and the other DAC you mentioned (can't remember), then it is your DAC failing or designed to color sound. The DAC myth is over.

Let's look at this scientifically. The only way you can measure DAC in graphs is by running it through an ADC. You need to convert the analog signal back to digital. Science is that it is a different test condition than running through speakers. In speakers there is a big amplification stage, there is impedance matching, there are various different factors compared to running through ADC. Its not apples for apples and it never will be, that's the science. Ed has the X6 & the X16. The X16 he told me doesn't have the mud or low mid build up of the x6 or whatever it is we hear in x6. X16 measures impeccably on audio science review. I've not heard x16 in my studio but from what Ed has told me if I had x16 I probably would've kept it. I remember the day he got x16, and that was when he realised that the x6 had that mud in it. He thought he was going mad until he asked me and I told him I'd always heard it in the x6 and that's why i would always stick with the topping. I don't have any measurements for x6 like what audio science review has for the x16 so it could be jitter. Here's the thing with jitter that goes deep. Dave Hill of crane song always talked about the importance of jitter in DAC's, especially when running through speakers due to the big amplification of the signal. Manufactures always tend to use a 1khz tone for jitter, where Dave Hill was talking about jitter over the entire frequency spectrum. With his solaris and avocet he was achieving sub pico second jitter over the whole spectrum. Solaris had jitter in the audible spectrum down to 0.045 pico seconds. X16 measures around 10 pico seconds (from what UA state) but on a 1khz tone. but what about jitter over the rest of the frequency spectrum? Here's a snippet from a Dave Hill paper "The measurements indicated that the D/A was working correctly. The first listening test did not go as one expected. On the first listen, the old circuit sounded better. After listening for a short time, with one’s ears learning what the sounds are, the observation changed. The old circuit was not warmer; it was muddier, less clear and did not image as well. This raised a large number of questions (some are technical and some have to do with ear training" See how mentions about mud in his observations. Does the x16 have better jitter specs than the x6?.. 🤷‍♂️ That's the problem. I don't have any measurements of the x6 and this was something that Dave pushed over his career, was showing results over the entire audible spectrum. Without having testing equipment costing like £20-40k I can't reliably tell you what that difference is in the x6. All I can tell you is that there is a common thread among engineers I know that have listened to x6, and it's all been unprompted. With DAC to Speakers we are dealing with science that I can't tell you. I can't measure the level of detail that I need to know. I have no way of accurately measuring jitter, or even jitter over an entire frequency spectrum. If I start going into firm conclusions as to why I hear what I hear then it's pure Dunning-kruger effect as I have don't have enough knowledge or experience to accurately determine that. All I can tell you is what I hear and make pretty uneducated guesses which doesn't really help anybody.

Audient Evo? Haha - you amateur. Electric Piano?? Honestly I can't watch any more for laughing. But seriously, modern audio equipment is so good that it's mostly about usability and workflow now and the skills of the artists/engineers. I've mixed AT 2020 vocals sung in a basement studio that sounded better than a U87 in a recording booth in a professional studio. Of course, it would have helped if the engineers in the "pro" studio had shut the door to the control room :)

It seems to be a trick a lot of studios do to keep or steal clients. I know a few engineers who felt they needed to save and invest in one big purchase just cause other studios were calling them cheap for using mics under a grand or tracking through dbx's and sruff. It's ridiculous. That's one of the reasons why I got in touch with so many mic manufacturers so I didn't have to deal with all that shit. Got sent about 6 grand in mics and it doesn't make me any better than any other experienced and skilled studio in the area. All it allows me to say is... That mic is £1400, that ones a grand, that's ones £1200, that one is the best modern take of a c414 bla bla bla Its good to have but it's very easy to mic somebody up wrong and ruin the whole recording

@@PaulThird better mic position beats a better mic basically 99% of the time. For vocals I think any JZ mic will do the same job as an U87 or Ela m251. Smooth mids without any weird resonance points is key for vocal recordings - the rest of the instruments are more forgiving in that aspect. Drum overheads don't like any resonances in the highs mids and lower highs but that's it

@@PaulThird personally I've got a matched pair of AKG C451b which I use when I want to stereo mic an acoustic guitar. Or if I want to pretend that I'm on TOTP 40 years ago. I can't say if they are better/worse than the Neuman's because I've never used a pair of km184s but I do get a tiny thrill every time I get them out knowing how much they cost in the US. One of the few things cheaper in Europe.
