WHEN FERRARI COULD STRATEGY! The Story of The Schumacher Four Stopper (2004)

The 1998 Hungarian Grand Prix was a great strategy call, but the 2004 French Grand Prix took it a stage further, as Ferrari decided to get Schumacher into the lead of the Grand Prix through doing a FOUR stop strategy.
It was a roll of the dice that would either work or it wouldn't. The pace vs those behind was so great second would be the minimum. It's whether it could go one more that would be the question.
So how did they do it? Let's find out.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

The strategy they played in Japan in 1997 was genius as well. Helped by Villeneuve trying everything to lose a championship in the best car.
@DeletedScenes312
@DeletedScenes312 11 ай бұрын
I was going to mention that one. Schumacher needed to finish ahead of Villeneuve to have a chance of winning the championship in the final race, but Villeneuve qualified on pole. Ferrari fuelled Irvine light, knowing that could get him in the lead, and they could then use him to help Schumacher win later in the race. Irvine stormed away at the front, and after the first round of pitstops he lead Schumacher, with the two Williams 3rd and 4th. Irvine slows to allow Schumacher to take the lead, then turns his Ferrari into a rolling road block. Villeneuve finishes 5th, ends up being disqualified anyway, but that takes nothing away from Ferrari's strategy.

The way Michael could pump out qualifying laps at the snap of his fingers is what seperated him from other drivers. Other drivers could perhaps have done it but they would land up crashing half the time so wouldn't want to risk it. As a team the Michael and Ferrari were just on another level and even when things didn't go all their way (2003) they would find a way to win. Sad that it took a BS tyre rule change and engine size change to derail them. I would have loved to have seen the Michael driving for Ferrari in 07 and 08 just to see how much different it would have been. He will always be my favorite driver of all time no matter what.

Michael didn’t have the natural quickness of senna but he was able to make up for it by learning everything the car could and couldn’t do in testing. Then just went to be as consistent as hell. He learned quickness rather than having it naturally.
@charamia9402
@charamia9402 10 ай бұрын
@@AidanMillwardAlso, the Michael studied the drivers in front of him to see how they would position the car and work the brake/throttle and try it himself to see if it was quicker, and adopt/adapt if it improved his performance. He was ALWAYS looking to improve and learn - from champions and backmarkers alike.

I worked for Bridgestone in 2004. Tyres were indeed tailored to the Ferrari. We’d test with Jordan, Sauber and Minardi too but regardless of how well they went on different tyres, we always took Ferrari’s preference. At the end of year party in Japan that all 4 teams were invited to and attended, the car on the cake was red. Could’ve had a red one, yellow one, purple one and a black one but no. The Japanese truely have no idea about public opinion. I was ashamed and team personal began leaving.

Yes, we all know the Bridgestones were tailored completely to Ferrari and Schumacher down to the nth degree by piling around Fiorano. It can be argued that when the control tyres came in that was why Schumacher left and left again when Pirelli came in.

Really speaks to how much of a devastating unit Ferrari were at the time. Not only did they pull off a win on a rare 3 stopper, but then did it again on a completely impossible 4 stopper. Granted all that testing and unlimited spending could help, but it kinda means nothing if you can't flawlessly execute as well as this team did.

This strategy always had more to do with tyres, refueling, engine mode etc than ferrari. Even if someone made a 4stop in F1 now you wouldn't be able to go at quali pace like Schumacher did or you'd at the very least run out of fuel. The rules just don't allow strategies as wild as this nowadays.

The Italian Grand Prix was probable the most memorable that year. A more typical Ferrari strategy call had them starting on Inters on a drying track that everyone else (well the Michelin runners at least) were on slicks. Michael spun on the first lap as well and by the end of it him and Reubens were plumb last. Having been told by Ferrari big wigs that a 1-2 at home was required, Brawn gave the order to do what they hadn't done all season put the engines in full power mode. It was not so much F1 versus F2 cars like yesterday but F1 versus F3.

Just subscribed simply by virtue of someone finally documenting and explaining precisely how brilliant Ferrari and Michael were in that era. Hungary 98 was a thing of beauty. It would be the equivalent of Aston Martin sending todays Red Bull to the shops with a shimmy and then winning the race. That era had the dynamics that allowed for such miracles. Until the FIA closed the door on red cars and folk called Michael winning motor races.

I really would like to see how open tires would work in 2020's era of Formula One. I get why they went to a single supplier model but with the cost cap and in-season testing banned, it feels like it could be contained and not become the crazy arms race is was in the Ferrari/Bridgestone vs Michelin/Williams/Renault/Mclaren. It would even be cool and probably bring alot more money into F1 if every team had their own tire supplier like they do with fuel/oil suppliers

'Finally, Schumacher isn't going to- YOU BASTARDS!' That can sum up me watching that race. It seems two lifetimes ago, being happy to see Alonso at the front... 😏 My disappointment at that Hail Mary was soothed by Rubens' final send on Trulli. What a move. It's crazy to look back on that as the beginning of the end for a driver who only a few weeks earlier had had his day of days.

One of the few things I have noticed rewatching this period was in some quali sessions Schumi and Ferrari would more or less try to minimize the damage by qualifying just in the top 4 while using their superior race pace,a very long first stint and great strategy to win. This,Canada and silverstone were perfect examples of that. Even though the F2004 is one hell of an amazing race car but on some weekends is well matched and can be beaten but Michael would absolutely extract ever performances out of an already great car even when he’s not in the most advantageous positions or the car is not clear cut the fastest for the weekend. Didn’t knew much as a kid but learning about these just made me glad I can further appreciate how talented Michael was

Just for fun, things I remember from Magny-Cours other than what was mentioned in this video: - Mansell overtaking Prost on track to win in 1991. Twice. - Jos Verstappen crashing at the last corner in practice in 1994 and debris narrowly missing pit wall personnel from another team (McLaren?). - Schumacher's blinding fast start passing the two Williams in 1994. - Villeneuve's heavy crash in qualifying in 1996. - Villeneuve spinning at the second-to-last corner in 1997 in a desperate move trying to pass Irvine for 3rd, smashing into the line of bollards at pitlane entrance, and just narrowly finishing in front of Alesi. - Schumacher letting his brother unlap himself so he could attack the guy in front on the last lap, but I've forgotten the year. - Hakkinen being so frustrated at being stuck behind Irvine for most of the 1998 race while Schumacher was getting away in front, that he spun at the last corner. - Coulthard's overtake on Schumacher on track. - Raikkonen narrowly missing on his first win in 2002 thanks to oil from an expired Toyota engine. - Ralf being penalised for going over the white pitlane exit line with one tyre while battling with Michael in 2002. - Hamilton's penalty in the race in 2008 after a first penalty in qualifying. - Kimi's cracked exhaust that same year making him lose a near-assured victory to Massa.

Plus the 2002 car managed to be competetive in 2003 while the 2004 car in 2005 struggled.

Eddie Jordan has said repeatedly since that Bridgestone did develop their tyres specifically for Ferrari during that era (which is why every team which could jumped ship to Michelin), which is one reason why Jordan performed so badly during that time. And that Bridgestone went further, supplying Ferrari with better performing tyres made from more expensive materials. (Surprisingly Eddie defended this practice, saying that they were right to concentrate on trying to win championships and that the Ferrari tyres were so expensive to make they couldn't let anyone else have them.) But my understanding of the rules at that time was that the tyre manufacturers were only allowed to bring two dry tyre specifications to each race. It had once been the teams which chose the two tyres they were allowed for each weekend, but I'm sure that by 2004 (and certainly by 2005 - all the Michelin teams had the exact same tyres at the US GP) it had changed and all teams were supplied with the same two tyres... Which would mean that Bridgestone & Ferrari were breaking the rules by not supplying exactly the same tyres to all 3 of their teams.

I think that rule changed for 2004. So the other three teams were getting tyres designed to fit the Ferrari and they went even slower.

I dunno, there is something just beautiful about the plain white engine cover against the scarlet Ferrari honestly. Okay the Marlboro livery was beautiful too but I tend to associate that with the McLaren/Penske in Indycar days. The blank engine cover, helmet and so on with the plain white I'd argue, looked better IMO. That was when teams got to show off because they couldn't run their 200 mph fag packets at three or four races a year. Also there was at the time a shot of the fourth I think it was, pitstop with a caption of ....you again, in Autosport. I don't know who wrote the caption but didn't Jim Bamber have a great piss take the next week in his cartoon? Always loved Bamber's takes on things in Autosport

You were asking about watchable French Grand Prix.. you could also throw in 1991 and 1992 but most races at that circuit were.. awful

wasn't that when paul ricard was still on the calendar? people say the 80s and 90s version of that circuit is way better but every archived race I've seen there played out much the same as it has with the turbo hybrids

unlike the axis, it's the only time those three could come together and actually conquer the world. although if we're gonna keep going with this analogy, it did end up going just as poorly by the end

Honestly, it's shocking how terribly Ferrari have been, since Michael, Ross and Todt left tge team. They really understood how to maximize their opportunities. Now, its s clown show.

Some say today's races are better, but the truth is no. A wacky seasons like 03, 05, 07, 08, 09, 10 and 12 but that's it

Probably the most overrated bit of "strategy" in F1 history, when your car is a 1 second per lap faster than your opposition in race trim you can do whatever the hell you want as it wont effect the outcome.

I feel the same about the V10 era in general, a lot of those races were dead fuckin boring & especially so if you don't know the context of any of them, even worse if it's any race from 01 and beyond, TC and launch control was a horrendous combination.

As dominant as this car was and as much as we all thought the Ferrari's were dodgy, they wern't. It wasn't nearly as dominant as the cost cappen car. Shame other teams aren't allowed to cheat.

Aiden, Trulli would have won Monaco regardless, he was the best on the day and ferrari had nowhere near the delta to pull of the suboptimal gamble they were going for
