Interesting indeed .From the looks of the voice coil it seems that were metal filings in the gap that was scoring the coil at specific points .

Finally someone who knows what the hell they are doing. I’ve been watching people recone with no measurements for the voicecoil depth and the motor structure. Most people who don’t know what they are doing just glue everything in as is with no adjustments for anything. 💪

That appears to be '05 Shocker Sig motor. If that is the case these were designed by Thilo Stompler who has a pretty good pedigree in the industry and it will definitely hold its own vs. anything without neodymium in the lanes. That said I have some American made OEM spec coils to fit those in D1.4 and D2.8 copper. AFAIK nobody else has any left so I had some wound this winter. n

@@mikoes08 '02 "big gap" version is a bit different. In addition to a much larger gap it has a larger pole vent and no copper shorting ring. The magnet slugs on the '02 stick out a tiny bit more from the top and back plate as well whereas the '05 sets almost flush. There were only 200 of those produced so they are quite rare. I owned a couple, and honestly they don't do anything that a hundred other 70 pound motors coming out of China now won't do.

It's 15 plus years old, and ANY subwoofer motor, depletes so to speak, over the years. Be it from getting hot over and over, and so forth. When magnets are heated over and over,and some reaching at or near the curie points, they essentially begin loosing their "charge" and will need to be zapped again. With that being said, there are many factors in why this motor has lost some of its strength. It is not, because it was poorly designed, so we can toss that statement out the window, as that is merely an opinion, and not facts.
@Chuck_Sanders

@nate0 I am not sure where you are located, but Patrick has a magnetizer. And he could help you out in that aspect, and he is located in Arizona. And, I can surely agree with you on alot of things, as sticking a probe I'm a gap, isn't the be all, end all of a said motor.

I'm building a motor and ready to do the machine work What is an acceptable coil to topplate clearance on a 8 layer 3" coil for a 2Kish sub with plenty of venting, top plate is .75" thick.
@95Sn95
@95Sn95 3 жыл бұрын
I've been under the impression .010 to .012, it's a fairly large motor at 560oz of that changes anything, I'm using the custom tooled 18" sundown frame. I've had a hard time finding this info.
@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 3 жыл бұрын
There is no standard or guideline, it all depends on the design as a whole. There is a balance for air flow to cool as needed and motor strength. The same gap isn't optimal for one setup as it is another. If the coil is nearly touching the top plate, it's not going to pass air or cool it, the same is the case if it's too big.
@HashDogg06

@@EMFAudio Out of curiosity if a thinner top plate makes more force than a thicker one with the same magnetism then why do most big hitters have them rather than a thin one. Is it required with high excursion to avoid an extremely long former & coil winding.
@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@HashDogg06 Top plate thickness plays a roll in several things, including Xmax. Having a higher gauss number doesn't make it a better motor than another. That's a whole other discussion I've had before.
@95Sn95
@95Sn95 3 жыл бұрын
@@HashDogg06 I've wondered the same thing when I was choosing material to build my motor I happened to notice a coworker was cutting up some 5/8" ms and some 3/4" ms so I said he cut me out some 8" circles would ya. I figured 3/4" would be a good middle of the road size. I have looked all over for info all I could find was something about "saturation" issue that mabey material can only transfer so much of the magnetic field so eventually with a lot of magnetic force you need more material? And the magnetic field is more concentrated on a thin plate vice versa with a wide plate. I would think at some point with a lot of magnet and really thick plate it would mimic an underhung coil but im just guessing I have no info to support that. All of that may be way off and totally wrong but I can't seem to find any info on it hard to come by and as far as the gap clearances I can't get anyone to say this to this distance is a good rule of thumb, I've asked a bunch and either get no reply or just it depends, and I know it's not cut n dry but rather not have to tear my motor apart 5 times to get a good all around clearance. So basically I took the top plate and pole dimensions of the lord of bass 400oz motor and asked them what coil they recommend for it, so I looked up there dementions and got a number so I'll use that as a ballpark, probably add a tiny bit just to make sure I have no rubbing.if it ends up a smidge large I have 7 slugs of 3/4"x8" freshly zapped ferrite so it's just shy of 600oz so should make less of an issue. I can get criticized on its configuration of not idea yeah I know shorter diameter is more effective than large stacks of narrower but mine are 8.25" that's not exactly narrow it's not 15 5" slugs. l but I don't care I'm trying to learn I'm building it from scratch it's intimidating but whatever if it works out I have a nice large motor on the cheap thanks to Patrick at robot, he does it successfully with great results out of modified old motor parts every day. I guess Im going to just have to learn the hard way with what little info I can find. And I'm hoping the end results is a killer 18" sub that really bumps and a peak to peak of 4" many bit more with a 3.33" x 3.01" ww 8 layer coil a 12" spider and mega roll cone , and hopefully take maybe 3k...maybe more? Sorry for the rambling.

Sometimes bd reference from people because they don't know what they want is making it hard for people who can build and make awesome redone and custom reconnes as long as they have the parts for Craftsman instance I have 22 frame and ?assorted motors the strmi have a quad stack high guess motor with thin ish and amen sort of size bottom plate and then a triples and quad stacks and all high gauss nitiess and all we need is someone to supply cones and surrounds with spider packs and unusual with coils in 3" &4" but it's not a big dea1pair in particular is a set of odd sizesed 4" coils and they are larger and smaller so of is larger and I'd is smaller than a. Regular 4" coil but when I find the right coil and and in the right thickness I'll make it on a decent ally former and a decent spider pack as I agreed pre posting you spider packs with you favorite im thinking it will be a round wire coil maybe a quad Ayer and bring the layers stepped down from top and nice and flstbst the bottom ad it seems to taper in st the top of the gap the add the cooling ring and the cradle and also the cone and mega surround the spider pack would be medium to get a good mix of loud and music high power coil about 3000wrms and it will be amazing but it will take some time as alot of people won't sell you parts to finish products do you can Finnish the subs you have backing up on order due to being unable to get good machining or good parts for instance cone and surround with stiching great cones if carbon and kevlar but come people make a desicion about you and don't tell you they don't have things you need and that you basically have to buy from the main builder you pay less but if the rest don't come to the party you have to tell all your clients that you can't do what they want because if mow and nothing else you can roll your own coils in round wire but you can't do anything because the person has not made a great deal with there parts suppliers so u have to pay top doller forrinstead of sharing the parts and making a good deal on parts you push the person away and well you end up missing a great opportunity because you were depending on others to pay for the now instead of saying it's too much and telling the clients the whole story before they out stuff to paper if instead of being high and mighty about it youbgekpped instead and then come to a real deal with parts and finished products and listening when the customer said that a product wasn't gonna be sold or received well but what do I know I'm just a builder of subs custom and easy and all of which are awesome builds and have been doing mega damage to cars and meters are awesome and do real quality music and you wouldn't hear it now I find you in the same or similar spot as myself and I need parts sample was retail now you have parts it seems and are in a position to sell them so how about selling the parts we need to our job and sending me a pair of recones with odd size coulssuoted to about 3000wrms long a long coil I'll send the measurements to you and you can help us and we can finished the projects we have been trying to get done now for some time but due to the builders so called now which by the way now is a pointless thing it really means as many as the clients want to buy unless that have a need to buy in products t make rhwire products from a larger build house what your doubling may work for you but if you can sell us parts or a carbon kevlar sandwich cone and a stiched megaroll 15 and the spider to former stop ring as we call it or the ring below spider we clue to set height setter with CA glue and then instead of trying to look and show people what's wrong with all these products just help people out and get kudos for being a good dude instead and growing the business nationally And internationally be know as a good guy rather than a guy who shows his intelligence by putting down brands as he's a decent guy but just makes it hard cause of the way he tests others instead help out and sell them the parts they need to finish the work they have on the books now

Cones ARE made of different materials, carbon fiber, kevlar, fiberglass, aluminum, and plastic aren't uncommon. They all have their advantages and disadvantages but cost is the first factor. Can the Lowballer hang at 10-26Hz on 1400w and get 140dB plus in a 6th order bandpass or something?

They wouldn't be optimal in that range, but could produce it.

@@EMFAudio is there a low wattage sub that can play optimal at those frequency that does well in a 6th Order parallel bandpass enclosure? 1000w rms or lower.

@@worldwideteambasscatdownri6963 The only drivers that will play that optimally that are found in commercial space are going to be home theater drivers. That is a completely worthless bandwidth that is inaudible to majority of humans.

@ *EMF Audio* Not completely worthless bandwidth at all when I’m going down playing 17Hz tones and people are going like “holy shit!”. Bass can be fun and not necessarily from a “musical” standpoint but those low frequencies can still be felt / heard given the right setup and tuning.

@@Bassotronics they can't be heard, anything you hear is mechanical noise. That's why they're called subsonic. As you said, tones, meaning not music. If you want to drive around playing subsonic tones that's on you but the rest of the world doesn't. That's why catering to outside of audible range is worthless. It's also why there isn't a focus on 30,000 hz.
