@@EMFAudio Not perform 'well' is very different than ending up with a broken sub. Ultimately the user is responsible for what happens. As far as a too big box, a 12 in a 6 cubic foot sealed box can still work - you just have to feed it a lot less power. The QTC of the system will be low most likely and there would probably be decent bass extension.

@@EMFAudio I'm not blaming the product. I'm just saying the damaged product is ultimately the users fault - wrong box or not. Like you said, it would be sounding terrible (when pushed hard) in that box so clearly the user was ignoring the sound of a driver in distress. Thats why its broken. The user. A driver in an oversized sealed box will actually provide very accurate bass - do a search on critically damped subwoofers. Just wont be taking big power and wont be meant for ground pounding in that box alignment.
@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 5 жыл бұрын
@@svtcontour It was in a ported box. Real life experience proves a sealed box that is too big won't provide accurate bass, or ported for that matter. They will be sloppy and often times peaky. I, too, like the sound of a huge sealed box. I just watch my power, and cone excursion, by making sure I have enough piston area to get the displacement I need, for how low, how loud. I very often only run a driver at 1/4 of it's wattage rating, because I run in compliance mode all the time.(well below free air resonance, where the driver impedance is essentially the DC resistance of the voice coil) I try my best, to cross over at a frequency, that avoids free air resonance, because the change in impedance creates a "hot spot" in the spectrum. I either like to run above or below free air resonance frequency, including the enclosure, which seems to raise it somewhat. If it raises it too much, I need a bigger box! When I'm choosing drivers, I need to know the X-max excursion, and effective piston diameter, because for every octave you drop in frequency, it requires twice the displacement. What it lacks in piston diameter, has to be made up for in excursion. Too big a piston, it's hard to get the pressure necessary, which means a larger enclosure. I prefer multiple 10's, 12"s or 15's at the biggest. If I need more displacement, I add drivers, which means more coils, more magnets, to create the sound pressure.

I'm assuming that sub was intended for a sealed box, (acoustic suspension design, NOT an Infinite baffle design). Certainly not a ported design. As such, it needs the volume of air in the box to become a restorative spring. When the box is too large, acoustic suspension woofers dont get the support of the compressing air volume. That is why it failed prematurely. That and the (car seat- to-volume knob interface).

I do the same thing - in my case two Alpine Type R 12" drivers in about 1.6 cu.ft. net each (optimum size is 0.75 cu.ft., recommended by Alpine). Works fine. Output of a sealed speaker is directly related to cone excursion, and the larger the box volume, the less power you have to apply to the speaker to get to a particular cone excursion and therefore SPL level.

@dom3827
@dom3827 5 жыл бұрын
Do those heavy spl focused car hi fi subs need so much dampening to not selfdestruct? I mean theoretically it is not about the enclosure, but the air pressure, mechanical dampening and resonance frequencys. So theoretically you just need to keep in a specific range of mechanicasl dampening by correct tuning. Because things like that do not exist in normal Hi Fi. I am electrical engineer and know very much ( not all ) about audio. Never heared ANYTHING like that. Honestly, for me it just looks like overpowering the speaker and reaching its mechanical maximum before the coil burnt. Well in that case it seems to have happened both at the same time. In Home Hi Fi the optimal goal would be an endless big enclosure. That is why there are open baffle speakers and why you put dampening woll into a speaker. To increase its physical size or more simulate a bigger box. But car hi fi subs are made for high spl and high excursion. Could be that you actually need a high specific air pressure to be able to control it more because those are so heavy. Or you just dont clip the speaker and dont exceed power specifications.
@JaMarvelousjmar

True in so many words. I can only speak on my situation. There are so many variables in car audio. Something as simple as playing the subs at volume with the cabin sealed or open. The subs might hold up under that internal pressure but once it is open that changes things. I think of the vehicle as an enclosure itself but in not an expert.

@@dom3827 Not entirely true. It really depends on the driver. In a sealed box a system Q of 0.7-0.8 gives you the flattest response, but I think around 1.0 sound better. Everything up to 1.4 is acceptable, that's the Fs enhanced by aprox. 4dbs in most cases, above that it gets too boomy. If your enclosure is too big and the system Q is below .6 the woofer is basically unloaded and just wobbles around without producing much LF. In an infinite baffle setup the system Q is theoretically the same as the driver's Qts, so it's only ideal for high Qts woofers (0.7 and above). Ported is a different beast, but here a bigger enclosure isn't always better either.

Most PPL build at a q of about 0,7 wich is not to small not to big. So a good mix between box size and perfect sound. In reality you will hear no difference between those 2 but a box that is to big is always bad (apart from woofer's that are made for free air / open baffle)!

When a subwoofer calls for a certain volume of box does it already calculate the displacement of the speaker or do you have to put that into the equation when building a box? J l audio calls for about .7 ft³ for a 10-in sealed box. But I'm not sure if the speaker displacement is already added into that. Most boxes I see are closer to one cubic foot. @@EMFAudio please explain, from what I know of the term clipping, it's when the amplifier output is maxed out and therefore DC at a high voltage instead of the top of the waveform. This distorts the waveform you were trying to output, and causing it to sound bad, but nothing more. How does this cause an arc or burn?
@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 5 жыл бұрын
@@daves2433 Clipping can be caused by a few things, one being as you described. It can also be from a source that is clipped, or a preamp signal that is clipped. Yes, the wave form has a flattened peak, which causes 2 things potentially. The tinsel leads are made up of multiple tiny wires. There are 2 considerations of that wire, it's ability to handle power and the bandwidth the wire can support. The bandwidth thing is very advanced science that shouldn't apply here because we're dealing with low frequencies so we'll bench that for this scenario. In the ability to handle power, a clipped signal holds as peak power for longer than a clean wave (that's what the flat spot is, peak power held over time). Because it's holding that peak power, it's generating more heat. Because leads are a fine thread, they're more susceptible to heating up and weakening, coupled with movement causing fatigue, the lead breaks. Now that the wire is broken but it's tied down, or maybe not every strand broke, it's very close. High voltage with metal nearly touching causes arcing, which causes burning. It's a multi-step process, one causes the other, causing the other. I should probably do a video on that.
@daves2433
@daves2433 5 жыл бұрын
@@EMFAudio thanks for the reply and explanation. I agree the max power from the amp is worse when it's clipped. This is not only (if it's the amp that's clipped) to be the max power from the amp, but also power that is driving the sub to hold still rather than move and allow cooling, which could be a large problem. That should sound like hell and be an indicator of a problem coming :) But if the signal wasn't clipped, it would be even more power and potentially overheat / melt / bottom out the coil / strain the surround etc... from that standpoint I'll side with what a previous guy mentioned, that it was just turned up too high and too much power, causing the wire to overheat, therefore get brittle and break, then arc & cause a burn. The bandwidth could actually be part of it too now that you mention it, having a clipped waveform would cause a higher frequency harmonic on the waveform. But I think the clipping would need to be severe to get high enough harmonic to cause skin effect issues on the wiring, but I haven't looked with a scope to know how high the harmonics get.
@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 5 жыл бұрын
@@daves2433 I know from the box size, it didn't see too much power. The coil itself cooks on those before the leads do with too much power as well. Generally speaking if it's a hard clip, ALL the leads will experience it and you'll see it in the coil. That's why I think it was a minor clip for a short period of time. The mark on the lead is the least of the problems.

@@lowlowfoshow2005 Lol. Having 6 Nightshades doesn't make you an expert, just as buying a high end computer doesn't make you a tech. Your comment about it though, makes you look ignorant and full of yourself. It's got a LOT to do with box size. Because if the box is TOO big, your sub(s) will break. Simple as that. It works roughly the same way when you free-air a subwoofer. That's why you never put too much power when free-airing a subwoofer. Also, a box that is too big will also begin to sound like shit and won't "thump" as hard. That's probably why this guy blew his sub the way he did--box was too big, wasn't getting good enough bass, so he turned his gains and bass boost up, and blew the sub.
@outtaroute92
@outtaroute92 5 жыл бұрын
Clearly you don't know much about a proper enclosure then. If your box is 3 times the size it should be then you're going to run into loading issues. With a huge box like that, there's not going to be enough back pressure for the sub to load off of and so you're basically almost free airing the sub at full tilt. Without the back pressure in the enclosure, you don't have the cone control that you should and when you're reaching peak to peak excursion, just like he said, the suspension is going to reach it's absolute limits and no longer be able to keep the cone and coil linear. It's going to start to wobble side to side just a little bit inside the magnetic gap and you're going to get coil rub. Which is exactly what happened here.

It means build a better sub with tougher softparts or dont power it so much, if you hear your subs bottoming out then lower the volume. A subwoofer is at fault 1% of the time, and its not going to fail because the box is ( to big) it failed because of the owner
@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 5 жыл бұрын
"Don't power it so much" could be less than rated power. Mechanical limits are mechanical limits, regardless of power. Having it in the wrong enclosure will absolutely cause it to fail. Yes, it failed because the owner had it in the wrong enclosure. If the sub is a bottomless design, you won't necessarily hear it bottoming out. A propertly designed sub won't smack anything, it will quietly reach limits to the point they fatigue over time. Yes it's true the person behind the volume knob is why nearly all subs fail, but they're also likely the person that installed it improperly as well.

If the box was tuned properly for the music he was playing then it wouldn’t have suffered from over excursion. The sub moves less as it reaches tuning, unless the box is too big. Which it was. You can extend a drivers response by increasing the box size and lowering the tuning but not without increasing excursion and lowering output. At some point the sub is just gonna free air.

It was a 12" sub in a nearly 6 cu. ft box. The box was too big, output suffers, bandwidth suffers, sound quality suffers, it physically suffers. Think 6 cu. ft is fine as long as you only put 500 watts on it? Transient response suffers.

@@viciadoemhalo3 There is a lot of theory and not a lot of real world practice in that statement. A bigger box is a HIGHER Qtc, meaning less peaky and more gradual roll off. That bandwidth on low end will increase but the top end will decrease. The F3 does go down, but the Fc also goes down. If there are only benefits when using a giant box or infinite baffle, why is nearly every sub produced intended for an enclosure and nobody using infinite baffle except in space saving factory applications? Infinite baffle does not offer phenomenal sound quality, nor does it offer remotely near the same output. Infinite baffle in theory and practice is the least efficient method of sub bass delivery. Just because the sub moves more with less power doesn't mean you get more output.

I recently connected a new 1200 watt Rockville amp and at first the subs were banging and handling the beat from the amp. Recently they seemed to be tapping out(wrong terminology, but I'm not sure how to word it right). Before they were banging just fine at the same volume. I thought they were in the process of blowing out due to excess power.....after watching this I'm wondering if my box is too big
@EMFAudio
@EMFAudio 5 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the subs are getting broken in so they're looser, which is why they're bottoming out (if that's what they're actually doing). If you mean they've gotten quieter, not making smacking noises sometimes, then you may have cooked the coils due to too much power or clipping. If they are smacking at certain frequencies, it's possible they may be damaged from it.

@@matthemberry2156 Sub sensitivity numbers mean less than you think. Video on that coming soon. Odds are a highly efficient 18" won't play lows well, though an 18" should be significantly louder than a similar 12" regardless. That is a huge amount of displacement difference. The truth of the matter is, 18's require huge boxes which majority can't/won't use anyway. Most times when they are willing to sacrifice that space they also want to use a lot of power. Therefore, a 750 watt RMS sub won't take the power they're wanting to use. End result, they don't buy them. 18's really aren't worth building for the masses till 2,000 watts and up.

Generally, if the box is to big, you'll lose dB's but have extended low frequency, with lots of over travel (excursion). The roll-off will for instance drop from 35Hz to 25Hz but you can easily lose 6dB at 40Hz. The big box will most likely have much more output below 20Hz, if you are willing to drop the volume to limit excursion. The bass will have much less punch and definition but sound more like a distant rumble.

I’ve been driving listening bumping it close to its limit and had to brake hard and heard it rub. (Sub is EVL18 on 1500w (ported) and in hatch facing up and towards back window at a slight angle.) When I noticed it first I thought it was clipping but I believe it was rubbing. It’s very nerve racking and sounds awful when it happens so every time I come to a stop I have got into the habit of knobbing down a bit. So much so that I reached for my bass knob when I was driving my moms car to SC (as well as a clutch pedal that wasn’t there. Many times) 😂
