Most impressive thing I ever saw: I played against Matt Olson (Oakland's First Baseman) in high school in Georgia. His school, Parkview High, is #1 in GA every year. This guy went 4 for 4 against us with with 3 of the longest homeruns I've ever seen. One of them went 450-460 feet easily. This was before the metal bats were regulated, but still. Our team was pretty good, but we could tell he was a man amongst boys. Oakland took him first round that summer. Now he's mashing for them in the bigs.

Most impressive thing I ever saw. Coaching an 11u travel team in Alabama. USSSA Major tournament to qualify to go to Disney. Can't remember the name. In any event, we are warming up in the outfield, watching a 12U game between some team out of Las Vegas and one of the best teams in Alabama. Both have pitchers throwing 82 on our guns. One you never heard of, the guy from Huntsville. One you have heard of, Bryce Harper. As a coach, I of course watch other games, and had heard of this lefty on this 12U team from Las Vegas who has hit a home run or walked in every at bat in the tournament. I saw several of his homers, all over the 300 foot fences, even though the temporary fences were set at about 220-250 on these fields. I was wondering why in the world a team from Las Vegas would fly all the way to Huntsville, AL to play in a tournament, and the word was that they failed to qualify in the tournament out west, and really wanted to go to Disney to the National Major USSSA event there, and this was the last tournament in the country to do so. In any event, I figured the Huntsville team would walk him every at bat, since at this time he had already played about 3-4 games, and hit about 6-7 homers. No, they pitch to him every at bat. Walked him once, and he hit 3 homers the other three at bats, one inside the 300 foot fence, and 2 opposite field shots about 350 feet, right over our heads. They ended up winning 4-2 and qualifying for Disney. Harper ended up going 12 for 12 that tournament, with 11 homers and one double, and the rest walks. Fun story, I told my kids that that kid was going to be famous some day, and to get his autograph. Only one of my kids did it, and still has the ball.

There is a story that went around in 1986 or 1987 that George Bell challenged Bo Jackson to a 100 yard sprint up the foul line. Bo said that he would give George a 10 yard head start and beat him by 10 yards. Then he went out and did just that!

Because Bo Jackson was and is the most athletic human alive! He did things on a baseball field that only football players could or would do, if he had pitched he would have been around 95-98

My son used to switch hit when he was younger. He throws left, and pitches, however he had a 12u coach that encouraged him to pick a side, so he started hitting right. He was recently told by club level coach at 15 that a lefty who hits right is a disadvantage, and that he should switch hit. However his swing on right side is very solid, and he routinely hits doubles and triples from the right side, and rarely strikes out. Should he work on his left side?

How do players usually react to rule/strategy changes? Replay, pitch clock, etc. or like radical shifts, focusing on launch angle - whatever. Great story! But what is the most impressive thing you have seen while on the field actually playing in a baseball game? Not just the most amazing athletic feat, but what is the most impressive baseball play that you have experienced while on the field, in the game, at any level? One of the many fascinating things about baseball is that there is no one physical type of man that it necessarily favors, yet it always rewards all types of athleticism. It is truly the game of the everyman and of every man. Any man can play it, yet no man can master it. A game whose object is defeat.

Jacoby Ellsbury: American professional baseball center fielder for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played in MLB for the Boston Red Sox from 2007 through 2013, and joined the Yankees before the 2014 season. Ellsbury was first drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 23rd round of the 2002 MLB draft, but did not sign. He was drafted next as 23rd overall by the Red Sox in the 2005, after playing college baseball for three years at Oregon State University. Ellsbury was the first Red Sox player in history to be a member of the 30-30 club. In 2011, Ellsbury also won the Gold Glove Award, the Silver Slugger Award, and was the American League MVP runner-up to Justin Verlander. After the 2013 season, Ellsbury signed a 7-year, $153 million contract with the Yankees in free agency. Ellsbury is an enrolled member of the Colorado River Indian Tribes; Ellsbury's mother, Margie, is full-blooded Navajo and his father is of English and German descent. Ellsbury is the first Native American of Navajo descent to reach the major leagues.

Is the language barrier between American and Latino players makes things more difficult to play as a team ?
@cubsfanman-nx6pg
@cubsfanman-nx6pg 3 ай бұрын
I know im replying 4 years later but im in high school with a mostly English speaking team and then 3 Latinos and only 1 of them really speaks English and then there are a few English primary kids who are bilingual and a bilingual coach Idk about all teams but we get along together really well. Typically like they won't hang out one on one since they can't communicate as well but as a team we all know each other super well and they're also really funny so we joke around and stuff it honestly doesn't change a lot. In mlb typically a lot of Latinos speak English so that helps and there's a bunch of translators so im sure it's a lot easier there
