This video tells the story of how New Zealand Forest Managers(NZFM) in Turangi dealt with a 3.4M+ ton wind blow event in the central north island.
In the video I try to cover everything from before the cyclone in Feb 2023, to the night of and right up to December 2023. WIth interviews detailing how NZFM handled the extra crews, marketing the wood, how crews logged the wood, the struggles logging the wood and more.
I approached NZFM to make this video to remember what they did for years to come. In this region most of us hear stories of cyclone Bola from guys that worked through it but not many would have seen any footage of the devastation. I wanted to make sure we could look back and show future generations how it was done as best I could. This is the first video of this size and detail I have put together so I hope everyone enjoys what I was able to put together.
Thank you to NZFM and everyone who helped with footage, interviews and information.
I was especially happy to have Binky Ellis, Les Owens and Dave Flight join me all together for an interview. I was saddened to hear of Daves passing just weeks ago and wish he got to see it for himself. RIP Dave Thanks for coming in and being a part of this.

Thanks for that ,, I know most of your interviewees so it was good to see them. Not an easy task by any means ,, Watching this documentary brought back a lot of memories from my experience in The Mighty Kaingaroa Forest 1982/83 before and during Cyclone Bola ,, I was a planning field officer at KLC Kaingaroa Logging Company then so to prevent timber and logs harvested from going off and becoming sap stained, we implemented a couple of large “Sprinkler system” in the forest to preserve logs we built one set up at Ngapuketurua and another at the small village at Tauhara ,,, so I know what Forest Managers and the people and Forest owners of Rotoaira and Taupo estate and Tuwharetoa Iwi are up against ,, one of my dreams is that we will ALL be working together as one people and helping each other soon ,, nga mihi tātou katoa ,,

Great video Ivan. Good to see the whole story, ugly, bad & the good. It shows how loggers (forestry people) work through stuff, and get in there together to get stuff done. How skilled and adaptable they are. Have to admit, had a few tears. Nice to see the Flight boys, my husbands cuzzies. Well done Ivan, Looking forward to more.

Excellent coverage of this devastating cyclone to my home country. Brought tears to my eyes to see the destruction and to hear the stories of the struggles of the Logging companies & Bushmen etc. It was hard to see. Just wish you all the best and stay safe while the fight to come back from this still continues. 💜

Absolutely Fabulous …carted my first load outta Rotoairia in 1990 and worked out of Lake Taupo and Kiko rd as well. Took that photo of the MTL MACK and LTF longs @ the Mount Wharf.

@itpv_production7358 I'd say they'd learn for a small period of time until big money comes in and all that had been learned will be put on the back burner until it happens again. Rinse and repeat

The trees are planted to be logged. Maybe you need to learn about sustainable forestry. Its providing alot in the area. Nature is fine. Consider it a tree farm. I won’t go on as not much more needs to be said
