What's weird is that when an idol debut at the age of 22 or 23 they are considered old 😶

It's funny how we normalise this . As a teacher it is very concerning when they look up to these idols. Age and physical appearance the entire thing is so stressful on teenagers growing up who want to be like them but don't know the half of it. Thank you for putting this out there . We need more of this.

@@terrafluent4238 the point lmao,,,, it flew over your head. jeez why ad hominem right away? though, I get your sentiment. But the comment above said "i wish we let kids be kids" it's talking about the world forcing the kids to pursue industries early and grow up. Not necessarily directly, but also through propaganda or peer pressure or other things. Not about whether or not kids want to do it. kids should be allowed to express themselves, but there is a danger to kids (im 17 btw im kids) entering industries this early, especially since it's their formative years and industries have a lot of BS and exploitative BS (what the video this comment is on is about) and a lot of other junk. There's also plenty of haters and assholes everywhere, and in the wrong environment, it would be hard to cope with that.

"I'm like how tf are 16 year olds rich social media influencers traveling around the world, making music, modeling, doing fashion collabs, etc." >> That's what got over your head. A truly good intentioned person would say, let's make weekly mental health check ups mandatory for these children and make sure it's not a case of child labor.
@michaelschneider8201
@michaelschneider8201 Жыл бұрын
1) Mental health check-ups will NOT help because exploitative job givers will just make the kids ace those tests as well no matter what, and children who have a genuine desire to be someone might screw up. 2) What's wrong with giving up mental or physical health for a dream? Teenagehood and especially childhood really are the best times to start at something because your body and mind are flexible, and when you're an adult you mostly only refine them. 3) "This is okay only if the child wants it". But what a person wishes in life is determined almost entirely by early upbringing and teenagehood emotional moments. Only really sharp strong experiences can change an adult's desire. That's the same thing as the body and mind flexibility. So if you bring the child up in a proper way, they will wish to be whatever you wish them to be :) IMPORTANT NOTE If you put all effort into making your child want to be a doctor and they don't want to be a doctor, it's either you who screwed up by not giving the right type of encouragement (right = the one that actually works and not the one that scares your kid), or it's the teenage experience of the child (less probable). Before you start typing: "BUT DISCOVERING YOURSELF IS WHAT MATTERS!!!!", think about this: What makes you up? What determines what kind of person you shall be? Your genes? Partially. Their role, the upbringing which suppresses them or makes them (the genes) express - all is unknown. Your soul? Get lost, that shit doesn't exist. Your most early experiences plus emotional moments from older age (the older you are, the more emotional these moments have to be to change you)? Most probably. Think of the conclusion yourselves :) It's pretty obvious :)))

Kpop is a fad so it will eventually die out like all fads do. K-pop has been around for decades, it's not new at all. People are only interested in it or pretending to be because they want to be a part of what's popular and current. Gangnam Style came out pretty much 10 years ago and everyone didn't obsess over Kpop then, they just liked that one song. Because that one song was popular, and they weren't really interested in that kind of music. Kpop is popular to Americans in the same way that Japan is, just in a trendy way but they don't really care about the culture.

@@amber619pop something tells me you’re definitely an American. You have that bubble mindset where you think that the west = the world. Even if the “fad” dies in the west, the K-pop industry will still be a huge corporation. Before it even became talked about in the west, it was still very popular all throughout Asia and other places. And will remain that way as it’s been for decades. So basically if and when it dies out in “the west” aka America nothing would change except your exposure to it. It’s toxicity will still be romanticized by all the other K-pop loving countries. You gotta remember the American audience is a lot smaller than most of the other international audiences. Meaning the K-pop industry will still have a huge market to sell its toxicity to.

As I get older as a K-pop fan I still enjoy the music from newer groups but I wish that more companies debuted idols in their mid 20s and older, instead of thinking that they would be no longer attractive to the public. There are still successful idols in their thirties/forties promoting now, although they debuted a very long time ago and have built up loyal fanbases over the years.

Well how about the fact that before our generation and the current generation, that people in the entertainment industry used to be allowed to be in the spotlight in their 30s and 40s. If you look at movies from the 50s and 60s you can visibly see that the people are no younger than 30 years old. Especially in classic black and white films the entire movies are made up of all adults, unless the plot is about people who are college age or younger. Everyone knows what The Twilight Zone is, and that is a classic example of how the casting used to be back then. Imagine if the entire series of the Twilight Zone was made up of 21-year-olds, I doubt it would be as good..

Petition to normalize people to debut at 18 and above, let them at least finish their highschool first and enjoy a normal life like other teenagers. Yeah I think it a good idea. At least they will be able to know some of normal life before become an idol. And they can be responsible for their own and their decisions. And those record companies won't use them so easily. Which I'm sure they do with the younger trainees. Kids are not so aware of legal and financial issues so they are easier to convince to anything, long time contracts, less salary and many other stuff.

get rid of age discrimination and let idols and stuff perform til they want and suddenly all problems solved. agree. let people finish high-school and have some education if things fall through. if people debut older, that groomed mentality of young young idols start to shift... and longevity will prevail. it's not a hard shift.. that benefits everyone- putting no cap on age. but industry doesn't want loyalty.. they want fast molding and expiry dates= endless supply

BoA debuted at 13 years old, Taemin at 14 years old just like her, Jungkook at 15 so it was always like this and I can say many more who debuted at a young age. It's not okay however the girls have already debuted. The only thing to do is ask the company that they have songs that wouldn't give dirty minded people other ideas. Although it's good to bring awareness about kpop idols debuting young, only taking Newjeans as an example as if it was the newest and most shocking thing is beyond me. And for people who are uncomfortable when looking at them because they're older than them then I must ask how did they feel when Taemin, Jungkook, Krystal debuted and how they looked at them. The other excuse they bring up is "at least there were older members in the group". That doesn't change the fact that the member in question is still young. Where was this enthusiasm for these other idols ? But I guess better late than never smh. So yeah if people wanna talk about an issue do it fairly and say and recognize the fact that it has been happening for years... And I must ask how is sexualizing idols the way people do okay just because the member is 18-20 or smthg ? Like some creeps waiting for an idol to hit 18 to start talking about nasty things over them. They would just be sitting and a lot of you guys would be "omg the way they're breathing is" or comments like "my ovaries. I want x to have my babies" etc like they're some sex objects to fantasize on assuming they wouldn't be uncomfortable while looking at those comments because "they're of age. They're not babies/innocent. It was expected of them. It comes with the job" The hypocrisy...

I wish I could like this video 100 times. Really happy to see this being addressed. Here are some lyrics from their song cookie: "If you want it, you can get it, if you want it", "(Keep) looking at my cookie" "taste it" "Take it, don't break it, I wanna see you taste it", "Sugar, I got sugar" Their management addressed it and said its an innocent song about "baking cookies with fans". Lets play the devils advocate here, if its about baking cookies, why is it always referring to one singular "cookie" and not "cookies"? Why do they refer to "boy" multiple times in the song? And another thing, they said their debut songs follow a storyline. So okay, attention is about having a crush on someone and looking for their attention. Then hype boy, which is about the beginning puppy love in a relationship. And then cookie is about "baking cookies for fans". And then Hurt is about the break up. yeah, that totally makes sense. Their management is not only filled with pedophiles, they also think we're stupid enough to fall for any of this. Poor girls.

this was really well done. i keep thinking about this topic because the members of newjeans aren't far from my age. i like them and think they're talented and would love their concept if not for the fact that they are so young, are being set out as bait for older men, and that cookie song. apparently cookie is a slang term? i didn't know that and i could still tell that the song was sexual as all hell. i'm dense as a brick wall. you gotta be pretty obvious to get to me. as a younger kpop fan, i sometimes like seeing idols my age because it gives me something to aspire to, i guess? it's inspiring seeing kids my age sort of achieve their dreams. but that hope/inspiration is juxtaposed with the terrible knowledge that they are being exploited, or that even if they're not being mistreated by their companies they're still now in an industry that will exploit them and use them--if not directly through the company (which are already exploiting them for their youth), then by "selling" them to old AND young creeps that view them as objects rather than as people. i don't know if this even made sense lmao

When I first got into K-pop I was shocked at how 15 year olds could be talented enough to sing dance rap on a stage with thousand of people watching like nothing, be stressed out 24/7 and constantly having to be careful because their idol image could be ruined, if anything that really made me sad but at the same time it also motivated me to be a better person and actually do productive things, idk what I’m trying to say is that yes it’s wrong, but seeing how so many people could get through so much at such a young age made me realize a lot of things about myself, so I guess in that perspective it’s good, but it’s also wrong because of their age.

The problem is that no matter how many ppl voice their opinion nowdays, it isint enough to change ppl from stanning grps like new jeans… it’s the same grp of ppl who says “we need to protect them” who end up supporting them and buying their albums and streaming their songs. If u rly want to help the girls, stop stanning the grp, stop listening to their songs and don’t support them - make it clear that we don’t encourage minors debuting so if the public opinion is so strong and sales fall then the agency will themselves understand that it is not doing them any good to debut minors and this will only help the girls as they won’t have to go through the harshness of the industry at a young age. I’d rather have the group disband if necessary instead of having creepy old guys fantasize about these girls… and the girls are talented so it’s not like the company will just throw such talent away, so if netizens rly show the power of their opinion, we could get groups like new jeans to debut late. Honestly I wonder what Danielle’s parents (since she has a western background) must be thinking after hearing their daughter sing cookie 👀

It's just a shame they disbanded after the final episode of the reality TV show they were in instead of actually pursuing it (the contract probably forced their hand, though I'm curious if any of them wanted to actually stay). It would be nice if motherhood/fatherhood (and maybe even relationships and marriage, but that seems to be too much for the rampant parasocial relationships in KPOP) was what was normalized in the industry and not... idols debuting before they even turn 16

Isn't it bizarre that although the average person lives into their 70's and 80's, and if you were to ask people of those ages whether they considered being 20-30yrs old 'a late starter' or 'past it' they would most likely strongly answer "no", when it comes to USA and Korea's entertainment industry, we consider it as being totally plausible that a 14 year old should work a full time job in the public gaze 24/7, being made into a brand, their mental health compromised, and that they are from then on running out of time before they become old in their 30's.

The fact that even back in 2013 when BTS were debuting Jin was already basically done with university... and now in 2022 we have 13 year olds debuting and dancing AT universities? Honestly a uni-age idol debuting is almost unheard of nowadays. And the fact that trainees are basically 10 or so now is extremely worrying. As if a 10 year old understands the stress their chosen career might put on them. Or that they're likely gonna be used by these companies and sexualised for profit as minors. I mean not to call out specifically but Wonyoung was 13 when she was dancing Side to Side (a song about being f***ed so hard that you end up "walking side to side") on Produce 48, eventually winning and debuting at 14. That performance went viral iirc. P Nation just tried to debut a 12 year old CHILD after their survival show Loud, and stopped because of backlash. Being a kpop idol is a entry level gateway into the entertainment industry kind of like disney channel stars. Their target demographic are teens so the idols are meant to be younger while having their company guide them on what to do. There are older musicians and soloists in the industry who operate according to their own artistic vision and would be offended by the title "idol" cause they are referred to as "artists" instead.

I completely agree with this video….. I am an 07 liner myself and seeing these idols that are younger than me looking like their twice their age is really mind boggling. I feel that they are too young to debut and I wished that the company would’ve kept them as trainees instead of feeding them to the world because the amount of backlash, praise, work in and outside of their school/job all affects them in a bigger and more efficient way because they are younger. I am not saying that these idols don’t have any talent or they are too childish. I think that they are obviously good enough to be presented and I know that friends my age are responsible (enough maybe😅) but I do think that there needs to be a limit on how young these groups are….
