It got so heated that towards the end, Bob's headphones fell off but the musical abilities of the whole band just treated that as another way to interact in this improvise setting. This looks like it, and it might be what I recall to be an insane story of how Larnell Lewis took a 13-or-something hour flight to this recording, listened to the base idea of the music he'd be playing with on the flight there, just to start the recording with little to no rehearsal beforehand. My favorite track from that recording being Lingus.

Man, this is some amazing transcribing. I got to study with Bob Reynolds at his sax retreat in Tennessee and he gave me a much needed ass kicking. He taught me that there's always a different way to shed tunes, and that even putting on random spotify playlists and playing along with them will do wonders for your ear.

Used to watch the tv or spend the evening with my friends/ roommates always holding the guitar and trying to figure out and play along commercial tunes while they were on, or sat smoking joints listening to their playlists while I improvd along. I was lucky to have roommates who like to hear me noodle and double the melodies of their songs, but I became a lot better and intuitive when it comes to improvising and immediately hopping into the correct key. My brain leart which frets made which sounds and in no time I could play a melody just by 'pre-playing it in my head' before the melody actually kicks in in the song or commercial or whatever. All that to say, hell yeah that is great method for sure. Also probably the most fun way to actually practice

Guys, you should absolutely subscribe to Bob Reynolds his KZfaq channel if you haven't already. Bob is extremely transparent with his process as saxophonist and puts out great saxophone content, some of the best on KZfaq. He is not only a top player, he is eloquent and clear in his delivery as well in these videos. Make sure you check it out! Another solo like this one that I listened to so much when it came out, was his solo on Janek Gwizdala's "The Space In Between". I love that tune and the sound of that band... Back then I didn't forsee we could ever be this priveleged to have both Janek and Bob providing us with so many insights. /Jorre

Yeah indeed, but its the same with Michael Brecker for example, in the few masterclasses he did he seems very unhappy and frustratie with his progress. I guess that's a natural thing to happen, whichever level you are at, and great players like Bob are so open about it. The natural state of being a musician

When things go wrong but you still finish the performance is the mark a true musician. I always think of that video where a string breaks in the middle of the solo on Little Sister and Stevie Ray Vaughan just keeps it goin and does a quick guitar swap and picks up like it was nothin.

Bob Reynolds is not only a modern-day master, having overcome every aspect of the possible difficulties we all face learning our instruments, but he remains down to earth, humble, kind, and a healthy human being in mind and spirit. I have such great respect for him and can only wonder what it must be like to be such a person.

I've listened to the album many many times but have never watched the video for this particular track. I remember the first time I heard that opening lick and I was like damn that is a devastatingly spicy way to start. But the headphones thing is an extra layer of satisfaction on top of that. I've seen them live twice, but it's on my bucket list to one day be in the room for one of these album recording sessions.

Its amazing how he uses the same motif repeatedly throughout the whole song but in different contexts, as if his use of repetition actually creates more variety

Repetition is what makes a song coherent. When you have a certain comfort or expectation in how the song is going to go, lets you get into the groove, then as you hear a motif come up and they riff on it/alter it/subvert expectations in some way, that's where the hair raising, spine tingling stuff comes from. Damn near every song does it in some way but two I'm thinking of where you can hear a very clear example in the chorus are goodnight and go by imogen heap, and part time lovers by stevie wonder. Oh and my way by frank sinatra, that one always gives goosebumps through that method

It's amazing to see how happy the entire band is in this clip, you'd never know that the whole time leading up to the recording they were all stressed that it wasn't going to work out and that the album just wasn't going to be any good. It's been said a million times, but Larnell Lewis really did make this album.

That's a world class trumpet player that kindly just puts dudes headphones back on for him without hesitation. This is one of those moments when the mistake is better then what was planned. Like Quincy Jones said after someone stopped on of Michael Jackson's takes, don't ever stop the take, because I aint worried about a little mistake, I want the take with the most vibe, not the most perfect one. That has wrung so true to me over the years
