Marcus Smart of the NBA Boston Celtics left the game vs the Los Angeles Lakers after suffering a left leg injury. On the replay you could see a pop in his leg and many people feared the worst of an Achilles rupture. But the initial report is a calf strain, and in this video we'll take a look at the footage and review what happened during this scary NBA injury moment.

For those asking about "pop" location, probably better for me to point out how it's just a focal spot that pops in the calf instead of the entire calf. If you watch KD and Dwight Powell to name a couple, you'll see the entire calf ripple/pop, not just a focal spot on the inside of the muscle.

I had the exact same injury while striding on the grass today without a proper warm-up. Calves massages are necessary for athletes who uses their legs an train on a regular basis. It can prevent and relieve legs injuries. I can relate to this because i lived in Thailand for 11 years and ran many races there and the regular massage regimen i had helped me stay injury free even though i used to run 50km or more every week back then. When i came back to the Western world i had zero massage and started developing calves issues within a few months, it may also have been caused by the re-introduction of gluten as i used to eat Thai food on a regular basis with no wheat bread or dairy products in my diet but plenty of fruits !

Good morning doc. Three days ago I was helping to carry a patient out of roadside ditch, up overnight a berm, then back down a very steep embankment. I was going backwards so my balance was facing the slop , I took a couple steps down the slope when my right foot slipped down the slope and I had a sudden sharp pain in my right calf, in the meaty area. I was unable to stand. The ER and my PCP both diagnosed gastronomic injury.

I even felt like i could gut out the rest of my reps but i did not. I ceased my routine and have been resting it. I can walk, stand on my toes, but feels like a cramp where the pop happened. I had this exact injury. I was running trails, up hill, and POP! I initially thought it was my Achilles, luckily it was just this. But it took a good 6 weeks to heal to the point of trusting it again.

Just finished week 1 from doing this exact same thing in racquetball. Going to take the full 6 weeks just to trust it fully. How did you rehab after the 6 weeks? Walking, then running? Light weights?

Had this happen to me last weekend playing vollleyball. Thought my achilles ruptured, i kept feeling for it but everything felt intact. I had no idea what a calf strain was until then.

Thank you for mentioning the healing time. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks since my pop from running up a hill. How long before you attempted walking again? Were you on crutches for 6 weeks? I can stand with all my weight on both feet, but to attempt to walk, putting all my weight on one leg, was a no go...hopefully I didn't set myself back, as it feels odd this morning. Can anyone discuss the healing times from experience for crutches, walking, then finally back to sports again?

So I had this happen while playing soccer exact same situation redirecting my momentum I physically felt a pop .It healed up with little to no issues and like 3 weeks later I’m trying to train calf raises and both calf’s popped but it felt like I cracked it like you would a back in my left calf . The right calf also popped but only once . Trying to push through and do workouts around the injury

This just happened me playing soccer on astro turf. Any suggestions for first day or two? It's really sore to put any weight on it. First time I've heard a pop when straining my calf.

I use to be a larger Long distance runner. My best 2 mile was a 9:10 in my teens. I never really ran the two mile. I did the half well cause that was what My dad did and I got to state and placed well up in the state standings so there was no need to play games to see what I would be better at. In my 20s I did several marathons and could hold a 5 min mile for 14 semi hilly miles in training alone and in the military they clocked me at sub 10 min for two miles several PT tests running in fatigues and black combat boots. They never did tell me how far under ten I did. I am about 6 ft. tall and in my 30s my weight started to climb no matter what I did and I had been lifting in college wrestling and running so I was in the 180 range at 9.5% BF. I went out on what was supposed to be a 6 mile training run and had this same injury happen to my right calf. after it happened It hurt like H*** and all I could do was walk for three months. About five months later I had the same thing happen to the other calf. If felt like I lost about a half in of the tip of the calf muscle and its amazing how much power u lose in that little bit.

Always stretch slowly and easy. Took me 2 months and a half to recover. Dond do any movement neither massage after 2.months. a lot of ice and pain killers. Light stretch after 2 months . I'm full recover but takes long time

Ok. For everyone wondering about this injury , I suffered a grade 2 calf strain , from the injury date to when I could walk properly without any pain took 7.5 weeks , it is a process. Week 1 and 2 you have to rest , RICE, and use crutches , week 3 and 4 , move more but be careful, week 5 and 6 , this is when you can walk more without pain , and start to incorporate exercises, weeks 6 and 7 , you should be healed now , . I tell you my injury was super wired , cause as after my calf pain went away after 5 weeks , my ankle hurt for a week after that my knee hurt . This injury makes your leg super weak , in my opinion it is a very serious injury nothing to be taken lightly.
