Not even Hearns showed any real want to fight Mugabi at that time. He was as dangerous as boxing ever had. Mugabi threw the kitchen sink at Marvin and Marvin seemed to enjoy it. Hagler proved himself to the Man of Steel and fighter of multiple styles to handle all situations. Neither fighter was the same after that night. Great fights come at a cost. And only Legends understand what their moment in time secures for the Legacy they created from all that sweat, work, and discipline. Both fighters great in my book. May never see another like it in my lifetime. So be it !

Totally agree. The first round of Hearns/Hagler was as good as any round in history. But Hearns broke his right hand, and the remaining rounds he gave it his best, but the fight pace slowed, and was basically over. Hearns always wanted a rematch but never got it. I'm from Michigan, and saw a lot of writeups about Hearns that didn't make the national news. For a couple of years after their fight, people would ask Tommy how his hand was doing. He almost always would say, "It's good, I'm saving it for Marvins head!!" Can you imagine fighting Hagler with one hand??!!! Wow.....

Hagler was my all-time favorite fighter then and still today. I went to his first middleweight title defense in the Boston Garden in 81 with my two buddies Freddie and Pepper Roach. Freddie fought on the under-card of that fight. I remember watching this fight on Armed Forces Network (AFN) in my barracks room when I was a soldier stationed in South Korea. John "The Best Mugabi" was a middleweight George Foreman at the time just destroying everyone they put in the ring with him........until this fight. Marvelous Marvin Hagler truly tamed the beast in this fight. It was a good fight by both fighters but Hagler was King of the Middleweights, one of the best divisions in boxing during this time, along with Lightweight and Welterweight!

Wow what a fight! This fight was very consistent in it's cadence and tactics of each fighter but yet still very impressive and even exciting at times. Hagler was wearing down Mugabi round by round with a 2:1 ratio of good shots by my estimation (just a gut impression) but there was still that threat that Mugabi could land a knockout shot to save himself. But the last few rounds, Hagler was just too strong and made it almost impossible for Mugabi to even survive and finished him. Both fighters were incredibly brave but Hagler is the Champion who truly boxed himself to undeniable victory. It's hard to put my finger on how or why but fights rarely seem this genuinely good these days. Hagler wanted to win and definitely showed why he's definitely one of the all time greatest fighters.

📌 Hagler started well on his toes .. stepping in with the jab .. going to the body on the inside .. stepping outside of the lead foot of the orthodox fighter .. mixing it up in the exchanges .. coming forward with pressure like Aaron Pryor even after getting caught in an exchange .. props to Mugabi for being game and going until he ran out of gas .. Hagler's conditioning and swift jab were definitely underrated as well as his innate ability to switch southpaw to orthodox instinctively to touch up his opponent with his closest hand regardless of where his opponent stepped
