In “When McKinsey Comes To Town: The Hidden Influence of the World's Most Powerful Consulting Firm”, New York Time journalists Walt Bogdanich and Michael Forsythe reveal the newest set of scandals produced by McKinsey & Company, the largest and most successful management consulting firm in the world.
As a former McKinsey consultant and project manager, I give my very own spin to this video review on their book “When McKinsey Comes To Town, in which the authors present the results from their meticulous analysis, suggesting that McKinsey was evil. On almost 300 pages, Bogdanich and Forsythe narrate story after story on how McKinsey served dubious clients in the private and public sectors around the world and how it supercharged their dodgy business models, which in all reported cases ultimately led to distrasous results.
In my “Halloween”-themed book review video, I first summarize the five worst accounts as given in the book in my personal “McKinsey Hall of Shame”. I then evaluate the book in terms of its strength and weaknesses, whereby I want to already stress that I consider it a must-read for every current and aspiring consultant as well as those interested to learn how top consulting firms such as McKinsey operate (though it must be stressed that, in my view, this book really only presents the absolute worst-case scenarios!). Eventually, I share my very personal reflections on the book’s claims on McKinsey’s work as well as address the question if, considering all these serious missteps, I would apply to and work for McKinsey again.
Make sure to watch the video until the end to get my satire at its best… 😉

Read the book. Worked for EY. I found your review interesting especially since you worked there. I am sure the book is factually correct but it does focus on the negative outcomes. I am sure there were other outcomes elsewhere that were positive but the book is not a book on how to be a consultant. After reading the book I am amazed how many of the major negative events in the world McKenzie had a hand in: 2008 debt crisis, Enron, insurance companies conduct (USA medical insurance is a farce modeled on the Allstate example), immigration policies and so on. Are you confident that McKensey had as much positive outcomes as negative or do the negative ones have less impact? Do you have any examples of large scale positive outcomes. This might be a result of any consulting.

Hi T64, thank you very much for sharing your thoughtful reflections. I agree with you that the book appears lopsided, though the McKinsey hall of shame is impressive indeed (in the negative sense). Yes, I am confident that McKinsey's work has had many positive impacts as well (otherwise I would not have liked to work for it), though ultimately it is a machine whose purpose is determined by the client's mission. McKinsey can achieve almost any goal, but it also is a mercenary. In terms of prominent positive examples, of course most of them are confidential, too, but for instance google for the "McKinsey carbon abatement curve", which was a real game changer for the climate change discussions in politics & science.
