People have believed I am poor and in dire straits when I try to sell something for a reasonable price. Then they think I must be desperate, and try to offer me next to nothing at unreasonable prices.

There are 5 stages of ever descending charity life cycle 1. Give once and you elicit appreciation 2. Give twice and you create anticipation 3. Give three times and you create expectation 4. Give four times and it becomes entitlement 5. Give five times and you establish dependency

That’s so true. I gave to charity, then, they must have sold my name to other charities because I get solicitations from places I’ve never donated to, and, some of them have the nerve to send me solicitations as if I owe them something…Those go in the garbage as do the one’s l never donated to!

I agree. I've given things away and one of 3 things has happened. 1. It's not appreciated. 2. They sell it. 3. They expect more.

This happened to me when I was divorcing. I was selling wverything and moving out of state so I didn't want to take it with me. Everything I had for sale they always wanted to barter and I was selling things cheap. The only thing they didn't barter on was my Miata. It was the kids first car, he really wanted it, and he paid cash. Also I wasn't budging on the price. I remember I wanted 45 for my chainsaw. The guy showed up with 40 and said he could only get 20s out of the atm. I told him to go get another 20 out and buy a pack of gum, then he'll have the 45. He paid 45. He said "Your going to lose a sale for 5"? And I said "No your going to lose a chainsaw for 5".

I found out years ago that a garage sale was just not worth the risk for me. I had my pet cat stolen after a garage sale as everyone who met him fell in love with him= a long haired, orange Persian who never met a stranger. I never had another garage sale again.

An old Dutch saying; when you touch a persons purse; you touch their life. In other words; true colors come out when you touch their money. I used to give pedicures for certain people for less money because they always were complaining about how poor they were. And they got me, stupid as I am. But after a certain time it didn't feel right to myself, they took advantage of me. They were very upset and angry when I told them they had to pay the normal price. So I told them that I had been very generous to them and that their reaction hurted me. Never saw them back and I'm glad.

Last year my father died and left me his pickup. This truck is a 2016 duramax all decked out, and only has 10k miles on it. It’s essentially brand new, it still smells brand new. I stop at the local pub one day and the bar owner immediately starts in about how’s that’s his favorite blah blah blah. Then he starts trying to buy it, I’m not wealthy, I wouldn’t say I’m poor either. He offers me 10k for it. I tell him to stop trying to con me , and besides it’s not for sale. He just spends the next hour treating me like a moron and how my poor ass should sell it because he’s making me such a good offer. I know that you can’t touch this truck for under 50k and that’s a high mileage version not one that looks like it just left the dealership. Trusting anyone is a mistake.

I have noticed that the older I get the more people try to take advantage of me, especially salespeople and handymen. I find myself not even wanting to go to social event because inevitably there is someone there with their hand out for this cause or that cause. I just want to work in my garden more and more. There is a peacefulness in the garden that I don't find out in the real world anymore.

I advertised my motorhome for sale and a guy came by and looked at it, said he would come back with his girlfriend. They come by, look again. She says let's go inside and talk about this. She offers "stock" in their soon to go public company in lieu of half the cash price. I answered, "I can't afford to put any money in the stock market." I was inwardly outraged and shocked but thought my answer would not spur any retaliation (I lived alone.) They leave. Two days later he calls and offers almost half my price and is pissed off when I say no. I remained polite. He obviously was going to resell it. What sleazy grifters.

I lost my mom in November of last year. She had bought herself and my dad a couple e bikes but my dad had neuropathy and doesn’t trust his balance at 74 yrs old. I told him I would sell them for him and he said if I want them I could have them. And I do, but I cannot afford what they are worth. I would rather sell them for what they are worth and give him that money than have a free e-bike. He’s $40,000 in debt with medical bills for my mom. I know $1500 or whatever he can get for the pair(they were never ridden) is a drop in a $40,000 bucket but I would never dream of taking advantage of him when I know he can use that money.

When you give someone a gift, one of the worst possible things that can happen is that the person receiving the gift will assume that the gift has no value, because they didn't have to make any effort getting it, and assume it was easy for the giver to provide. It's a terrible thing, and I have experienced it.

Several years ago, my wife and I had a garage sale. A man stopped by, looked around and asked me if I had any watches for sale. I had a pile of watches upstairs and brought them down. He pointed at one and said, I'll give you $70 for that one. I realized it was the watch given to my dad when he retired. I knew if I was offered $70 at a garage sale it was probably worth way more. I looked it up online and discovered it's valued between $4,000 and $10,000 depending on the condition.

I have been saying that since Covid people have been crappier. I am a soapmaker and do craft shows. I have been doing this for 20 years. I had a woman ask me after getting a discount if I do military discounts. I had never been asked that before, but I figured sure why not. After she left my daughter told me her purse cost over a thousand dollars. I have no problem giving out a military discount (plenty in my fam have served) but why even ask a micro business if you obviously have the funds. I only offer one discount or another these days.

I disagree that people are born evil, because even toddlers develop a sense of fairness. A one year old will offer you a bite of their food without being prompted, over and over again, for example. People respond to incentives and consequences, and in our society, we have perverse incentives: screwing people over makes you rich, and there are generally few consequences. Being generous, honest and hardworking makes you exploitable in this environment. My philosophy for helping people is this: help the people who have helped me in the past, and help people who don’t ask (or hint, or beg). That type of person is usually proud and reluctant to take help, and they deserve it the most in my experience.

Because I've taken a path that has made me able to leverage margin and savings by using a budget, I often get looked at as a resource by certain family members and friends. There's a family member in particular who has driven up their credit card debt substantially and she has little to no retirement. She's able to make a small income and also collect social security. And hasn't ever followed a budget and when I bring it up to them, I get "easy for you, you make more than me!". I made horrible decisions with money and made a LOT less at one point. Went through bankruptcy and took a loan off of my retirement, paid penalties, etc... Awful. So when I try to help them see the error of their ways, because I'm on track now, they just want my money. It's a mess.

When you give someone something no matter what it is it becomes a gift. At that point we have no say over what that person does with it no matter how we feel about it. When we try and help people out, we ask what they have to trade, work it off, pay for it (whatever "it" is). Then we get comments like: you guys are rich, you can afford to give it away (we're not rich, we've just been good with what we've earned) OR...you're parents helped you financially to buy your property(NO, neither parent helped us with our mortgage, both sets of parents gave us a healthy work ethic "no worry, no easy".

another thing: If you make them drive for nothing (because it irks you that they _dare_ ask for a lower price) and it is a mentally unstable person ... I would not do that. The friendly and firm: "No this is my price, I will not go lower" is also safer for you. There is no emotional entanglement. if they blow up on you over that (on the phone) just end the call.

She is a reseller calling out another reseller for trying to make a profit when she is selling items she gets for free. Bartering & reselling isn't bad and both parties have the right to say no

Agree 100 percent with everything you said today. Thank you for this I learned the hard way. Let's put it this way lent a friend furniture for his Air BNB he sold the place and gave my furniture to his sister, it was a done deal by the time I called within 2 days to say congrats on the sell and asked about my own furniture. The Brother /Sister duo wanted a nominal ransom fee to remove my own furniture form the sisters home. If this friend would have just told me he was selling AND DONE the right thing by asking me what I wanted to do with the furniture, i might have sold the furniture to her. This brother sister duo knew the right thing to do but did not and to top it off they are both considerably well off and early retired folks. Never again will I see these giving, gifting, and helping others the same, the duo has been 86'd out of my life after 20 yrs sick sad people. Do not learn the hard way like I did.

Need to be firm with this. If you sell beef quarters many will mistake you for a bank. They have the beef quarter from the locker and in their freezer. Then how you going to get your money? This is a VERY common happening with producers here in the Midwest. Can’t tell you how many people we talk to that have been taken.

The older I get, the less patience I have for people taking no responsibility for screwing other people over. People today have the perspective that a its not my fault its a systematic problem even when they are making the system happen by taking part in screwing people over and b nothing matters as long as I make money in the end because if not me someone else will. People seem to have no morals anymore.

Alot of ppl haggle over price. I learned to up the asking price on anything I sell. I hate it. I stopped doing garage sales years ago because ppl expected a huge discount from what was marked. I'd rather donate the items then haggle with ppl. A 100 dollar item they would want for less than a dollar.🙄

I have learned a lot from a period of time when I was struggling. People who I thought were my friends, were the most predatory. Sent me into a tailspin, doubting my own judgement. Guess who was upset when they got cut off? (Hint... It wasn't me!) Currently fielding calls from one person who is trying to 'rekindle' our friendship. Yeah... No thanks!

Welcome to the world of selling stuff online lol. Trick that I’ve learned is what ever price I want I double it and then negotiate. The thing I’ve also have learned is if you have something for a dollar people won’t buy it but if you sell for 5 dollar they will buy it. It’s the weirdest thing. And when you sell it for the higher price there the nicest people. The cheap people are the worse. JC

You're exactly right. The ones who want things for little or nothing are the first ones to find something that they think is wrong and then complaine. I learned to never bartar and to never undercut anyone elses prices. I set prices to either the middle ot the top of the going rate. I've also noticed that if something isn't selling I need to bump the price up on it some. People can be so strange. Nothing that I sell is a necessity for life. I figure if they can't afford the price that I'm asking that's their problem. I want a lot of things. If I can't afford something I don't buy it.

I've always tried to help my family out. When I was younger, family members took advantage of me and I did not realize it at the time. I put a stop to it in 1986. I had to tell a family member that if they are ever hungry I would buy them food. However, a dollar bill will never leave my hands and go into yours. I helped this particular family member for 10 years without question. My favorite saying to her is," I can't want for you what you do not want for yourself."

Most people do not understand the difference between meekness and weakness. For one to be meek, it takes inner fortitude to go the further mile to understand weakness in others. To do so requires one of integrity, with character, honesty, values, morals and ethics. These are characteristic of an adult. Unfortunately, there are more children and adolescents who haven't grown up to become adults yet. Stay the course!
