If you were old enough to know what a cellphone was in the year 2004, then you remember Motorola's iconic RAZR flip phone. But what you might not remember is that the RAZR was just one in a series of "4LTR" releases throughout the mid-oughts. These included, among others: the super-slim SLVR; the substandard ROKR; the ultra-premium AURA (covered in episode 2 of this series) … and a phone that looked nothing like any of its siblings, yet blended perfectly into the 4LTR family - because it looked like nothing else on the market, either. On this episode of When Phones Were Fun, we’re heading back to the latter half of 2005 to unpocket the plump, pudgy and perfectly precious Motorola PEBL U6!

[ABOUT WHEN PHONES WERE FUN - MOTOROLA PEBL U6]
This is the tenth in a series of MrMobile videos exploring the mobile tech world's most vibrant period in design and experimentation. In “When Phones Were Fun,” Michael Fisher re-reviews cellphones from the golden age of mobile, the decade-long span from the turn of the century to approximately 2009.
When Phones Were Fun: Episode 10 features a Motorola PEBL U6 press unit on loan from Avi Greengart, President and Lead Analyst at Techsponential. No company paid a fee or otherwise offered compensation in exchange for this coverage, nor did any company preview or approve this content before publication.

I remember stopping by the T-Mobile store and being blown away that you didn't have to train the voice dial for the PEBL. It was the first phone where I'd seen such magic. If you didn't live through the era of training your phone for the handful of names you thought you'd want to voice dial, you don't know how amazing modern voice recognition is.

You know, there is plenty of "should be on netflix"comment on good youtube video series, but for this series,i agree completely, mrmobile is a quite charming host, and pretty sceen ready imo(make sense since he study acting and probably aspire to be fulltime actor),for phone company ,i think its agood branding opportunity for them to open their archive if they are agree to help ,for netflix its a documentary show that resonates with great age group ,who i believe begin feeling nostalgic ,so there is a market for such documentary, however the problem i see is ,we often overestimate how big the market for such a genre and mrmobile (no dig to mrmobile here),i figure netflix already has their own market market research team to decide what series or show to make next time, but, hey things change,if no netflix offer things like nebula or just youtube like we see right now is good enough

That hinge mechanism is absurdly cool, kinda surprised I didn't hear a thing about it back in the day. The RAZR had all my attention (and most everyone else's) while the PEBL felt uninteresting to me, but that neat trick shouldn't have gone unnoticed. Someone bring it to a modern flip phone and I'll be in trouble...

This series brings my heart so much joy, thank you for taking the time to do it right. The PEBL was one of my favorite phones ever (I had the maroon one, but I would've preferred the burnt orange in this video) and I loved that no one else had it or even knew what it was because at the time it was available unlocked only. The hinge mechanism and the keypad were just next-level. Our GSM coverage in the area left something to be desired so I would keep my fun phone (like the PEBL) on Cingular and my BlackBerry on US Cellular (because their network was unassailable). Oh, the good old days. Also, details like 0:58 are among the reasons that your channel is so great. Perfection.

I absolutely love this series. I have absolutely zero nostalgia for any phones, seeing as I grew up in the age of the glass slab. But the odd design choices, marketing, and left field chaos that came from the wild west of tech is enough to make an amazing series. I love your channel. Keep it up 👍. I remember when they first became popular and you’d see someone in a grocery store looking like a crazy person talking to them self and then everyone else realized and thought they were one of those pretentious people with that silly Bluetooth headset. I loved mine when I had it in high school. Everyone wanted to flip my phone even just once. It definitely was talked about a lot but quickly a forgotten phone. Even just 2 years of use later it started getting gummy on the outside, the screen cover adhesive started weakening and lifting, and then the hinge started to go as well about 3 years later. By that point I had already moved onto a Sony Ericsson brick of a phone and then got my N95 shortly after.

This was my first cellphone!! I was probably 10 at the time, and got it as a gift from my uncle. I felt so cool with you back then. Never thought I'd see it in this series. 😍

Yes my friend, FINALLY you're doing THE MOTO PEBL. Ahhhh this brings me back😃 I had one & it was one of my faves! Yeah it wasn't the greatest tech-wise, but still I loved it.

I still whoop out my Pebl from time to time to flip it open and close. You get me! I reflect fondly on this time in mobile phone history as well. Good work, Friend.

The Razr was one of my favorite phones those and the Boost mobile phones that introduced the "chirp" option. I would love to see your take on the old bluetooth earbuds from the yesteryear versus what we are using now.... Awesome video Mr. Moblie as always.
