Everyone remembers the Motorola RAZR. But few recall the ancestor that laid the groundwork for its ascendance. And that’s a shame, because the Motorola V60 is a phone worth remembering. On this episode of "When Phones Were Fun," Michael Fisher takes a look at the famed "mini metal moto" from 2001 - the phone that blended style, features and performance so well that it spawned seven sequels and lasted well into 2005!

This is the twentieth in a series of MrMobile videos exploring the mobile tech world's most vibrant period in design and experimentation. In “When Phones Were Fun,” Michael Fisher re-reviews cellphones from the golden age of mobile, the decade-long span from the turn of the century to approximately 2009.
When Phones Were Fun: Episode 20 features a variety of Motorola V60 and V65 handsets contributed by a MrMobile viewer, as well as several V60 devices purchased by MrMobile.
Portions of this video were filmed during a Motorola press briefing at Motorola headquarters in Chicago, for which Motorola provided travel, lodging and entertainment to members of the media (including MrMobile).

As a gen Z growing up not remembering the tech of mid 00s, getting into phones with my parents having Blackberries and iPhones I just want to say thank you for showing me all these phones and teaching me the really cool history of mobile phones that I was too young to remember but now I am never too old to appreciate

Yeah I am in a similar age. I am certainly too young to remember when the iPhone launched, cause I was a child that couldn't care less about things that were for adults anyway. But in primary school I was actually one of the first to get a phone and it was some Nokia I don't know the name of and this was the norm. Like nobody had an iPhone or a Galaxy. At least not people my age. That was in 1st and 2nd grade. I don't know what exactly happened but suddenly EVERYONE had a smartphone when I was in 3rd grade and in 4th grade I got my first tiny LG Optimus whatever and I just adored it sooo much. And I had this for nearly 4 years.

This makes me cry. What an era Moto represented with its phone, versatility and style. 2000s were all about gaming and style led by exemplary models of Moto and Nokia Keypad phones were a boon and it just hurts to see the market almost nullified in developing countries. If someday Ericsson and Moto wakes up on the right side of bed and start making phones with keyboard, unlike what BB did, that will be truly an era to live in. Thanks again Mr. M for a banger

MAN. Every time I watch one of these videos, part of me wishes I could go back to a time in the early 2000's JUST FOR A DAY but instead of being in my elementary school years like I actually was, I could be in my late teens. I feel like I missed out on a lot of fun tech and media when things were a lot simpler, and if I was older, I could fully understand it.

My grama was a real estate agent for the Lake Tahoe area in the early 00’s and she faithfully carried one of these to sell those million dollar mansions there. I loved playing around on her Moto’s so much, that my first flipphone experience was that of the V190. I always get a bit of nostalgia when I see that M logo, and although they’re under different management today, I’m glad Motorola is still around 💙 Always will be a HelloMoto kid.

I know it's FAR more recent than most of the phones you cover for this series, but you did mention the Moto X in this video, and the MotoMaker era was truely the last time i was excited to buy a phone. My brother's 3rd gen Moto X with Ebony back and my white and pink Moto G4 were the best looking phones ever made, imo. I'd love at least a mini retrospective of Google era Motorola phones

EVERY single “When phones were fun” videos hit me right in the feels as I remember that era of new super innovative technology features coming to laptops, tablets, watches and smartphones as smartphones grew to replace most of our dedicated devices as I’m just a few years older than you and can relate to your college and work history from the same era.

Man I have so many things to say, so many memories. I owned the v60 as well as my brother, both antennas were already broken since my father and his business partner had already owned them. I remember a cool game where numbers were "falling" and you had to press them before they reach the bottom of the screen. I remember that I switch the phone when the carrier demanded for digital chip on our phones, apperently those were 'analogical' chips, I still don't know what that meant. I then owned the v3i, another marvellous phone. I remember seeing both the v60 and the v3 in so many films and shows. I remember those phones being extremely fun compared to what we have nowadays. Thanks for the content! ❤

OMG! I remember the first time I saw it, on a store at the mall. I got crazy to get it but I couldn't afford it. It was the GSM version, with GPRS Class 8 internet LoL!

I sold these in Alaska in the early 2000's for Dobson Cellular One. I used to customize them for friends and sometimes customers with flashing keypads and antennas. Those were the days!

Thats so cool, I had one V60i back in 2003, with that same custom blue cover, I was a kid, so the bold silver was too granpa for me and when the 2004 year came I had to chose betwen the V60 color or the nokia 6560, happen to got the nokia, and on the next year, I didn't know until today, got the sucessor of the V60, the beloved V3 razr! thats almost 20 years ago! I absolute love this series, unlock so much nostalgia from my childhood, thanks Michael

I will always remember how I upgraded my StarTAC to my V60 on Bell Atlantic and I loved every moment of it. I really feel for Motorola as a company but I’m hopeful that they will return to greatness one day. It’s nice again to see a video like this of how we got to where we are in the mobile technology field, Motorola was The pioneer in mobile technology and seeing the company fall from graces is just sad.

As someone who had the Startac, the “Vader” V3690, the V60, the V600, the Pebl, the V3 Razr, and the Razr 2 I do miss the days when Motorola ruled the world. Fun phones indeed. Great video as always.

I remember when I worked for Mercedes Benz a lot of the older cars had the cradle for the Motorola inside the center console. Some still had the phone itself in the cradle still, just deactivated. Really cool video!

As I watch this on my iPhone 12 Pro Max it’s easy to forget where cell phones started and how far they have come… I collect old cell phones and have a few antiques that still work and I play with from time to time and it’s just amazing to think about the technology we have now vs what we had back then… Michael I love these when phones were fun videos cause it just brings back memories 😁 sorry for the long comment lol

I got kicked back into the moment of 2003-04 when my Dad bought this phone as a first ever mobile device into the family from one of the passengers in his Taxi. I was a little kid during this era. My dad always had Motorola flip phones (including two StarTacs). I got a W376G TracFone in high school, then shortly after upgraded to a RAZR V3 GoPhone (which I still have and it still works!) I really appreciate these videos looking back at old tech. I was so fascinated by it as a kid.

My dad used to work for Motorola. Had used the V60 back in 2002 and V100. My favourite solid phone from Motorola would be the Talkabout. The yellow finish simply doesn’t fade away. After 20 years.

i bought a NOS V60i from a local authorized bell mobility reseller in 2005. At that point i was 15 and using a cheap-o Audiovox CDM8600 that my parents so graciously got for me the summer before. Color screen and downloadable ringtones were not enough to make me want to stick with it... the v60i was an older device but still the most stylish portable phone my carrier sold. I secretly spent almost $500 to buy my v60i outright. The store owner was just some guy who loved electronics so the interaction was super casual - nothing like going into a carrier branded store. He could dissasemble and fix out of warrenty devices and his store was full of random electronics wall to wall. I would regularlly stop by after school to check out what he was working on. A carrier store would never have sold a 15 year old a phone let alone do the IMEI swap to someone who was underage and not on the account as a user - but 'the phone guy' knew i was passionate about electronics and that my parents 'wouldnt mind' if he swapped out phones for me on their plan. I remember getting comments from adults about my beloved v60 'what are you doing with such a nice phone' lol. I still have it along with my collection of OEM metal housings - one in red, green, gold, silver, gun metal and one thats almost grey-green. There were so many color variants for these phones! I wish i could use one today

'the phone guy' would also sell me my first camera phone the next year. At the time all the daytime tv shows were going on and on about teenagers and the 'dangers' of camera phones. As a result - my parents were very much on team 'dont give the kid a camera phone'. So again .. back to the phone guy i went and bought a new old stock Samsung SPH-A600 ... that was an incredible day. I remember being able to upload photos to my carrier's website and from there i could share a password protected link through an email to friends or family who wanted to check out my gallery. A techie friend of my parents lived in Boston at the time and loved being able to see what i was doing with the family from 1000km away. I did not have an internet connection at home until December 2008-2009 but i have been browsing on mobile since 2002. Its been a treat to watch it all evolve~

My father LOVES this phone. He love this model so much he bought like 3 of them. He kept using it them till they weren't available for buy anymore and even them he kept asking me to find him one, but mobile companies wouldn't allow those phones to be part of their ecosystem anymore so he was forced to ditch it. This and the Startac are my father favorites phones of all times. I even owned one of the V60 for a few years

You know... I have always loved Motorola phones. Even though my first phone was One of the old, bullet proof Nokias of the late 90's early 2000"s. Back when contracts meant that you had limited day time minutes and unlimited weekends. Now i have unlimited everything for one low price. My first Moto phone was a Nextel phone. Cant remember the model but it was the rugged one more suited to a construction site. Was never more happy to get out of that contract tho. Dunno what Nextel was thinking with those prices vs limitations. Sure was cool to beep in on my bud tho and scare the shit outta him with that loud as hell speaker those phones ALWAYS had. Love the content you provide. Many memories brought back watching your vids. Keep up the awesome work! LLAP

I recently bought a replacement battery for the factory option Motorola V60 On my 2004 BMW X5. Surprisingly, it still has signal and it automatically set the correct date and time after I turned it on.

Yeah, some of the devices in this video were able to register on their respective networks and auto-set date/time. Sadly Verizon won't activate them anymore due to the lack of e911, but it's nice to see them working.

I worked for Cingular back in 04-05 and vividly remember selling some of these phones. It's amazing in retrospect that it was such a revolutionary time for telecommunications.

I absolutely adore this look back at the old technology. Back in the day where I thought cameras on phones was the dumbest idea ever, and thought texting was stupid. Now I take more pics with my phone than my camera (yes I have a camera), and text way more than call. I truly LOVED the technology of the late 90s early 2000s. Back in the days of Palm Pilot vs Pocket PC, new digital cameras that were 2 megapixel (wow !), just so much fun and exciting. I still have my V60 along with a similar model of that Ericsson (still have it too). The Ericsson on Cingular (before AT&T acquired them) was my first cellphone.

Mannn what a throwback. That was my first phone ever. Got it as a hand me down from my dad at a time I had no need for a phone at all but I LOVED that thing lol. I still think it has one of the sleekest flip phone designs ever.

I had a V60 after I lost my Sony Ericsson World T28, which I loved because it was so different from the phones virtually everybody else was using. Thanks for the memories! 😀

I really wish I still had my gift set from Motorola from the launch of the v60p it came with a thank you for doing training and had a key chain and pocket knife it was awesome

I had Motorola D160, M3788, v360, ROKR E1, RAZR V3. Great phones. Damn, didn't even realize how many Motorolas i have owned.

Always wanted a v60 to go with the v66i I sometimes still use today. The looks it gets is priceless! Wish I could find a belt clip too!!

I never got to use this properly but I used my parents old one as a toy communicator when playing as a kid. Very fond of this one Edit: rewatching this and didn’t register that your drunk voice recording mentioned NewGrounds and man what a blast from the past for better and worse 😂😅

I feel like I haven't seen any content in forever. WHERE HAVE I BEEN!?!? OMG when you pulled the plastic off a 20 year old brand new phone. I can only imagine the endorphin rush. Hell I had one.
