A retired Rios (he played 10 matches that year) against a young Federer. Rios in his prime would have destroyed this Roger. Imagine both in their primer, Rios 98 vs Roger 2007, that would have been insane.

Rios did so much mistakes, what a horrible match to see. But prime Fed is in the 2010s, he improved each part of his game, but the 2000s era was so weak people still think Federer prime was there...

@@DVDKC Pasa que Nadal y Djokovic fueron tan dominantes que opacaron a Roger; por eso se asocia el prime cuando fue más ganador y se mantuvo por más años como N°1... Más allá que haya mejorado su revés de manera posterior; las estadísticas duras avalan lo pensado por muchos; que el prime de Roger fue el 2006 - 2007... Hasta el Australian Open del 2010 Federer ganó 16 GS... De ahí en adelante hasta el 2020 solo 4; casos similares en los M1000 o ATP Finals; en definitiva tu afirmación no se sustenta con las cifras.

@@DVDKC Rafa, Agassi, Safin, Hewitt, Nalbandian, Roddick, Haas, Ferrer, Berdych, Davydenko, ... sure the 2000s was a "weak" era. As evident by the 2010s, Federer regularly made many players look average even when in his late 30s.

@@benparsons4979 lmao he was nowhere near the league in terms of talent compared to these 2, fabrice was pretty focused on his career and still only managed to at his peak be a top 20 guy, while rios just mess around and reached no.1 and won 10 more titles than fabrice. No disrespect to the magician tho, he did the most with what he's given.

Rios was talented, for sure, and Federer is, well, Federer. But neither one was/is more talented than Rod Laver. His record speaks for itself. TWO calendar year grand slams, eleven total major singles titles even though he couldn’t play the amateur majors from 1963-1968, his prime years when he was in his mid-20’s, one calendar year pro grand slam (when the tour was still split), 78.4% career winning percentage, 200 total career titles, winning head-to-head record against Rosewall, Gonzales, Emerson, Hoad, Ashe, Newcombe, and Australia won the Davis Cup all five times Laver played on their team. No one in tennis history comes close to that record of success.

With Marcelo Ríos injured and on the verge of retirement, he still made a worthy match against Federer who was coming with all the impetus that made him a legend. At least they managed to face each other, despite the years of difference and how young Marcelo retired from tennis.

Ríos tenía 26-27 años en este partido... La diferencia de Federer es que fue disciplinado.. Ríos después del 98 actuó como ex jugador y hasta se lesionó por lo mismo... Nótese que Federer se retiró a los 40 a gran nivel... Bueno, Ríos tenía solo 5 años más que Federer...

Oh my! So many of you here talking about Rios like you either knew him, or played on the tour. I am pretty sure neither is the case, and most likely whatever you *think* you know, either heard it from "someone who knew" ,or y'all coming up with your own theories. Not defending Rios' off court behavior (at all), but the man was very much to himself around other players and respectful (surprise!). Also, by 2002 he already had 5 surgeries (ankle, adductor removal (yeah, removal), and lower back). My point? You guys have no idea what you are talking about (In general when it comes to tennis. Your comments give you away) and what is like playing with (and recovering from) injuries. It sucks! But you don't know and you certainly do not understand (I hope you never do). Be good, people! Admire what it takes to get there, and enjoy the show these guys put on for you. Peace!

En la vida muy pocas personas pueden decir que fueron número 1 del mundo en su deporte, actividad o especialidad y además haber demostrado un gran talento, por eso creo que Ríos es el mejor tenista y deportista chileno de la historia, porque además será muy difícil que sea superado, de su vida personal no comentaré ya que lo que importa y trasciende son sus grandes logros deportivos 🎾😎👍🏻

Ríos lo vi jugar años. En mi opinión cometía muchos errores no forzados con jugadores potentes que casi no fallan. Ríos tenía golpes increíbles con ángulos impresionantes pero en puntos largos fallaba. Este tipo de jugadores de hoy casi no fallan. Ríos se frustraba con jugadores así y tiraba los partidos. No tenía cabeza para soportar puntos de alta intensidad. Incluso pienso que nadie tiene golpes tan angulados como Ríos y cambios de ritmo así pero no poseía capacidad para contrarestar jugadores que golpean muy fuerte

Ríos intentaba acortar los puntos porque nunca tuvo un físico privilegiado. Siempre tuvo que forzar su físico al límite, después de ser n1 vinieron sus lesiones más graves. Ya para este partido arrastraba una lesión en la espalda. No tiene nada que ver con lo mental, en cierta medida si jugaba más de la cuenta terminaba desgastadísimo. Es cosa de ver que jamás retrocedía 3 o 4 pasos para pegarle a la pelota cuando se le venía encima, sino que prefería pegarle de sobrepique. Marcelo tuvo que forzar su físico más allá de cualquier otro tenista de esa época, el no medía más de 1.66 cuando tenía 18 años ni tampoco tenía un peso ideal para jugar, obviamente lo suplía todo con talento, pero para llegar a ser n1 tuvo que forzar su físico al límite. Vean las entrevistas a su preparados físico y verán. También el mismo Ríos dijo que de haber tenido un equipo adecuado podría haberse mantenido muchos más años jugando. No hay comparación en la tecnología médica que hay en la actualidad y la cantidad de trabajadores que tiene un tenista de elite para ayudarle en la prepración física.

Rios often said he didn't like to train that much. He had a lot of controversies for going to parties then breaking up with his wives. Sometimes he would go drunk to play matches. Pretty much like Kyrgios is today in terms of personality. Makes you wonder how far he could have stayed number 1 if he actually focused on the game.

he's out achieved kyrgios by miles tho, it actually takes a pretty incredible and consistent effort for at least a few months to achieve that no.1 ranking, which nick will never touch ( I don't see him focused for more than 2 tournaments in a row)

El Chino en esos años estaba lleno de lesiones tenia su físico todo desgastado , lesiones, en la espalda en la cintura , pubalgia etc , así todo hizo un buen partido ante un joven y tremendo jugador como Federer, aún así mostró pinceladas de su talento el Chino.

Rios in his prime was a unapologetic asshole with more talent than he knew what to do with..So sorry to see his career go south..He was soooooooo talented.

What happened to Rios after 1998 ? For me the most exiting talent. So flexible. But here he was a shadow of himself. I read about health problems but no details.

Para Marcelo Ríos este compacto es un buen resumen de lo que fue su carrera: Tuvo la mayoría de puntos ganadores pero a la vez la mayoría de los puntos que pierde fueron mas bien errores de él antes que puntos ganadores de Federer. Yo vi muchos partidos de Ríos y casi siempre era él quien ganaba y perdía los partidos, todo dependía de su estado de ánimo y estado físico.

Federer jamás logró en su carrera tener la habilidad innata de Ríos ; pero Ríos jamás logró tener la fortaleza mental de Fereder. El tiempo lo corraboro.

"Es como" porque no tenían esa diferencia de edad... Federer 21, Ríos 26... Ríos y su indisciplina y falta de metas terminaron condicionando su propio físico y las mismas lesiones fueron producto de su poca preparación física...

Federer en una entrevista dijo que pagaria una entrada para ver al chino Rios, asi como Maradona dijo un dia que trataba de hacer los trucos de Magico Gónzalez. Y me preguntó ¿por que siempre se admira a estos tipos indiciplinados ? . Y nada simplemente porque son genios en lo que hacen y viven en una realidad diferente al resto.
