Robust crowd support. Yes. Kotex's dirty antics. No. There was A LOT of talk to Messina during the changeovers about the Hippo's incessant delays during Shelton's service games that ultimately resulted in a deserved point penalty. Plus, the taunting finger wagging from Porkov whenever Shelton double faulted. Ultimately Ben's bigger weapons got him the win & he mimed the Ruskie's impotent fist pump before the Hippo's no look handshake at the end.

Grazie mille, Italia! Thanks for showing Shelton SO much love in doubles & singles this year. Once Ben found the rackets with the string tension he needed, it was a wrap. After missing way too many returns in the first set, Shelton settled in, stopped trying to go for the lines all the time and found his range on return. Shelton started serving bigger in the 2nd set & brought his forehand into play more while keeping the backhand stable. Bryan also gave him some much needed feedback during Kotex's bathroom break before the 3rd. Ben put more balls in court & made the heaving Hippo hurl after more balls. Both players had extended conversations with Messina during the changeovers, but it was CLEAR the rancid Ruskie was playing dirty to delay Shelton's service games. Messina finally made him pay with a point penalty at a crucial point in the 3rd set. The crowd boos, mimed fist pump, & no-look handshake were all cherries on the clay cake. What a match.

Great play by Shelton. Kotov seemed to be in the wrong in the examples we saw ... although I'm still not sure why the crowd boos underhand serves-I've always thought that's dumb. I your opponent is standing that far back ... using an underhand serve is a legitimate strategy.
@got2bjosh
@got2bjosh 2 ай бұрын
That underarm serve was just one of many underhanded tactics used by the Hippo throughout the match. The crowd, Messina, & Ben were on to Kotex from the start. Ultimately, none of them worked & Shelton was victorious.

@@DanielFolsom It's a legal shot, but unless you're injured and can't land on your loading leg properly, there is no noble reason to use that serve. It's meant to catch your opponent by surprise, but it's become less effective as more players have become better at chasing down drop shots. Still, Kaughtov won that point in the rally.
@DanielFolsom
@DanielFolsom 2 ай бұрын
@@got2bjosh Hm. I just don't agree about nobility. What, exactly, is "not noble" about it? If the receiving player is standing particularly far back from the baseline ... it's the right strategic move to throw in an occasional underhand serve. To be clear: I'm not defending anything else as to Koto's conduct, but tennis crowds have always been weird about the underhand serve.
@SomeHoboProductions
@SomeHoboProductions 2 ай бұрын
@@got2bjosh you know what else is meant to catch opponents by surprise? Body serves. Taking the ball early. Taking the ball late to force the opponent to guess early. A drop shot after a long baseline rally. Hitting away from the open court when your opponent has committed to running to the open court. Making a no-look shot near the net to fool your opponent into committing one way. Tennis is about catching your opponent by surprise; it's half the reason plays are drawn up and strategy is useful

Basically, Kotex played dirty the entire match & lost. When returning, you're supposed to play at the pace of the server. When they're ready you need to be ready. Instead, the Hippo would delay Shelton's service games to where Messina finally issued the rancid Ruskie a point penalty in the 3rd set. On top of all that, Porkov would wag his finger when Shelton double faulted, fist pumped on return errors, & underarm served at one point. The mimed fist pump from Belton & no-look handshake at the end from Pavel was just a sign there was no love lost between the players.

@@got2bjosh Whatever! So both were acting like spoiled brats. Anyway, I get that Shelton could get under your skin but Kotov could have been better as well. I will give you that but I would like to know why he was pissed at Shelton in the first place. What was the trigger point of all that nonsense? BTW, judging by your creativity I guess that there is "no love lost" between you and Kotov also. ;)

@@aryusure1943 Shelton wasn't being a brat. The returner must play at the pace of the server. That's literally the rule. Delay of game is another actual offense. To answer your question, here's the tennis tea: In the 1st set, Shelton was missing a lot of makable 2nd serve returns, so Kotex was holding comfortably & then got a break at the end. In the 2nd set, Shelton sorted out his rackets & found the one with the correct string tension, so his shots stopped flying on long/wide. That settled him down and allowed him to find his range to make more returns. Couple that with Ben's bigger serving & now there's way more pressure on Porkov's service games. In response, the Ruskie ramps up the mind games by continuing to take time during Shelton's service games which he knows he can't do. After dropping the 2nd set, Pavlov leaves the court which allowed Shelton to talk with his dad who told him what to fix on return as a break for the 3rd set would be crucial. Eventually, Paved met the end of his road and grew more fatigued with each game as Shelton upped the ante on his serve & forehand. Shelton also made him run more & more balls down. Eventually, Messina issued a point penalty after way too many delays on return. The stalling tactics continued as Kaughtov tried to delay play even further & asked for the supervisor who of course sided with the umpire. Through it all, the crowd remained with Shelly.

@@got2bjosh Thanks for the colorful summary. I'll take your word for it since I did not watch the match and the video starts with the point penalty to Kotov for violating the clock rule which gives you a point (no pun intended). BTW, I know the rule that you have to respect the server's pace. Nadal pissed off a lot of players with his pace though, hence the service clock was put in motion. And nowadays some returners don't respect the clock. Upside down! And I get that you remained on Shelton's side as well. ;)

Pavel Kotov is a great player. Fun to watch. Had no issues at all with playing against a crowd.. He was brave enough to deliver an undercut serve against Sinner in a match deciding moment in Madrid. I can respect that! Good luck at the French open Pavel!

Pleasantly surprised that Ben was able to keep his composure here. Saw the video thumbnail and thought we'd have dual meltdowns, but definitely a potential show of maturity for Shelton against a notorious agitator. Now only if he can show the same when he's struggling.

As if! Shows you DIDN'T watch the full match. Shelton, Messina, the supervisor, & the crowd were NOT having Kotex's dirty delays. The Hippo was in hot water & had it coming with that point penalty. Finger wagging whenever Shelton double faulted, fist pumps on return, & most egregiously not playing to the pace of the server. That mimed fist pump put the rancid Ruskie in his place.
