When I heard Jon on KOOP talking with Rush over his experiences and philosophy behind see you by the fire was one of those moments where I was driving and had to just pull over and appreciate. It sticks with me daily and I revisit this video as a result, too... Full speed ahead to our favorite Skunk!

I got onto a San Francisco bus, and as I sat down in my side-facing seat, I looked out the bus window. Joe Strummer was exiting the front door of a building just as the bus was pulling away from the stop. Joe and I locked eyes, and I could tell that he knew I recognized him instantly. I will forever kick myself for not getting off the bus and heading back down the block to try and say hello. The Clash are one of my all time favorite bands.

Joe Strummer borrowed some of our bands’ equipment when he recording in Munich in the mid-80s. One evening we hung out at the Domicile jazz pub. He said that the highlight of the Clash’s first U.S. tour was going to Lubbock and paying respect at Buddy Holly’s grave.

I was at that show. I remember it a little differently but he’s right about how amazing it was. Life changing indeed.

He is a great story teller. I saw The Clash open for The Who at Shea stadium when I was in high school. My parents told me I could not go but I had to. An epic ensued but it was worth being grounded for two weeks.

My friend saw The Clash on one of their 1st U.S. tours. He got backstage after the show, got his copy of the 1st Album Autographed, and Joe gave him a bottle of Guinness.

A great story told by Jon Dee Graham. Joe Ely, The Clash, and The Skunks would be a venue to see, ‘heavy lifters’ indeed. Cowboy, punks, and hippies would be a show of their own. An epiphany can strike anywhere at any time; you need to be ready. ☮

Nice story, glad Jon felt good about his decision. My friend was a big Clash fan and so he bought tickets to their first appearance in the US at a NYC club called Bonds. It oversold so the first show was shut down by the NYFD. We had tickets a couple of shows later and he dragged me to the front of the stage as we got in line early and had a few beers waiting. When "London Calling" kicked off, it was superb! While I wasn't a big Clash friend overall, my friend years later who is a musician ran into Joe Strummer late in NYC one night. They hung out and landed up having breakfast together as the morning tolled in and he said Joe was a very nice guy.

Jesse Sublett weighing in here. Jon Dee has always been a great story teller, besides being an incredible musician and songwriter. When we got the call from the promoter about opening for the Clash, I said YES immediately. Wayne Nagel, from the Continental Club, found me right away and talked me into keeping our booking at the Continental as well; he was super confident that the buzz would follow us after the Dillo show, and this was only the beginning of my trust in Wayne paying off. The club was jam-packed after the show. The Skunks took the stage again and rocked out before a crowd that was super charged with adrenaline after the Clash/Ely/Skunks show. Around mid-way thru the set I invited Ely to join us, along with Topper Headon and Mick Jones. I looked at them and asked what they'd like to play, and they seemed to be at a loss, so I said, OK, Route 66, which we did, with me singing, and after that, I believe we continued with Gloria, You Keep a-Knockin', and probably Lucille and a couple of other garage rock nuggets. Then we played Ely's Fingernails. The crowd was fairly ecstatic. I suppose Joe Strummer got up around that point to do Not Fade Away, as I don't recall him being onstage before that and since I had been doing the singing prior to Fingernails, there would have been nothing for him to do. It was an historic, thunderous night in the history of Austin music. The foundations of the scene had definitely shifted in a new direction. Roger OneKnite Collins, of the Continental, who had always worn the cosmic cowboy look, went out and got his hair cut after that night. PS. On a later occasion that Ely jammed with The Skunks at the Continental, some members of Ely's party had positioned themselves at the side of the stage to give Joe Ely his cowboy hat. I let them know about my "no cowboy hats on The Skunks stage" rule. They were really mad! But I was firm. I don't know that Joe ever knew about it -- or if he cared. Ely was and still is a super cool cat.

I’ve been to over 1000 shows, I used to work for Ticketron. My wife asks me what was my favorite show. I tell her the Clash at Bonds in NYC. Also saw them walking the boardwalk in Asbury Park once.

I saw the Joe Ely/Clash show here in Houston. Seems like it was pre-London Calling tho. '79 maybe. It was kind of a lark. I was just curious. Even before the show started, they had DJ playing an eclectic assortment of records. From Reggae to Country to Punk...I felt right at home. It was an epic show, and I've been a fan of both ever since.

That's my recollection, too. I was at that show in Houston in '79, it was pre-London Calling. (Edit: London Calling was released in January of '80 in the U.S., so I guess they did play tracks from it. My memories are dim, that was almost 45 years ago.) They came through again in '82. That show was at the University of Houston with Really Red opening.
