Sometimes, things don't go perfectly when you're doing live production work in the concert world. In this video, we delve into the lesser-known side of the music world - the post-show surprises and shop work that follows a concert. A behind-the-scenes account of what goes on after the curtain falls. Things don't always go as planned. This video highlights one of those times.
This is an often overlooked aspects of concert work. From unexpected challenges to the tireless efforts of the crew, this video sheds light on the realities that techs and their teams face once the applause subsides.
As the video proves, there's always another show to do, and you just have to do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Today's video wasn't exactly planned... But the opportunity just presented itself to show another side of live production work and the type of things you sometimes face. I'm sure many have faced the same scenario, and if you haven't you probably will find yourself in the same situation eventually. And if you don't ever have to deal with it... consider yourself lucky! Whether you're an aspiring tech, stagehand, musician, or concert-goer this video shows you another side to concert work.

You sure hit home on this one! I've been a gigging musician for 43 years and involved in small venue sound production for 18 of those years. I've experienced dust, rain, mud, wind, and it's all part of outdoor shows. Oh, as a performer, there's nothing like playing outdoors in perfect conditions with a light breeze and an enthusiastic audience of people of all ages. But I'm almost 60 now, and I avoid outdoor gigs as a general rule. Event organizers don't typically understand my concerns today like in times past. For instance, they can't see why I decline bringing my gear onto a stage directly beside where a rodeo or smash up derby took place the night before. And they have trouble grasping my issues concerning a very nicely built shelter that is only the same dimensions as the stage itself, as if they've never experienced blown rain in a storm. I politely steer them toward a younger band or sound company. I find your videos to be spot on. I've learned and continue to learn much from you and I thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. It's the real thing when it comes from people who know their craft.

When I did this full time decades ago we called the county fair circuit the "Mud n Dust tour". Had separate (old) cables and gear dedicated to it. When it was over it was to the car wash with all the cables. Brings back memories!

Just when you think you have it all you find mud hiding someplace you missed... Everything had been loading docks following this mud gig and yesterday was a liftgate gig. And there was mud on the liftgate! Forgot all about cleaning the liftgates on the trucks.

If it's an outdoor gig, it's gonna rain. We have used tarps, trash bags and 6 mil plastic to contain the really messy stuff as much as possible in the past. With access to water you could rinse cables as they're being packed, but who is gonna want to mess that on loadout after an all day or multi day event? These are hazards of the trade I suppose. Perhaps a clean up fee could be applied for your out door events.

Yip... All you can do is assume it'll rain, prepare for it, have a rain drill in mind if it happens, and deal with the variables as they come. Of course this one came with an entirely different variable. Nobody had said rain was on the way, and it happened within minutes of the load out starting. So, other than the preparations that were normally in place already, it was a really quick scramble in what is little more than an organized fire drill at that point anyway. Headliner just striking their stuff... FOH just starting to break down... etc...

I was curious how washing come of the cables with water won't short them out?

They'll be dry before any signal/electricity is ran thru them. That's one reason to get them cleaned sooner rather than later when they are going to be going back out again on a soon to be happening upcoming gig. The only real concern would be more along the lines of corrosion at the connectors. But we try and not get the inside of the connectors wet, and also use a bit of WD40 (and/or in some cases contact cleaner) in some places if it seems water got where we didn't want it in any major way.

What a nachtmare! I’d use baby wipes to clean up the gear after a dirty little gig, but this is nuts! How do you build the clean up cost into the gig? There’s no way you can just eat that, except after that first one and you didn’t know.
@AlanHamiltonAudio
@AlanHamiltonAudio Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you kind of expect there'll be some air blowing and dust rag work after one of these gigs... But it's always in the back of your mind "Is it gonna rain??". Obviously, you do what you can first and foremost to set up things with the gear protected from rain. And then secondarily, to mitigate what would happen if it does rain. But, like I said in the video... some things it just is what it is. Nobody is rolling multipair or feeder and it not touching the mud. And you can't really avoid getting mud on your shoes and tracking it everywhere. That's eventually clinging onto other cables, casters, and things. Even using some plywood to build 'trails' only works to a point because they get tracked full of mud eventually. And slick when wet. You try and mitigate who goes where when their shoes are muddy, but eventually it's still "all hands on deck!"... pardon the pun... to get it packed and on the road.

I've rolled an extra 8 hours of cleanup labor (potentially refundable) into the initial quote for the event. If questioned, I simply state mud and my equipment do not get along. I also explain that 8 hrs is roughly half of the actual time.

You just kind of have to allow for it in the first place and know if it happens it'll be a giant PITA. If you're on a clay track, it's always a possibility so you have to think about that when booking these kind of gigs. Ideally, you wouldn't have a ballroom a couple of days later... but of course that's the way it works out too many times. :(
