More now than ever, it seems that "star cases" pop up in the media of maybe a missing person or a crime that has happened and social media gets into a frenzy over the case. With people acting as detectives the wild theories come like a tsunami. Let's talk about that and let me know what you think. I do not want to discuss individual cases just this trend.

It’s nuts a line between always thinking they should always.. be able to say what they like conspiracies and the law , I served in a jury on a serious case it’s really difficult to completely isolate yourself on a long case..you aren’t supposed to go online ect,we came to a good conclusion but a different group of people who knows the verdict..

I think . . . BIG BREATH . . .let's face it, no one cares what I think 😂 The media, papers and TV, have long been taking a little piece of information and then speculating about it for half an hour. The average person has been trained to think that way. Where can we air our fabulously important opinions? KZfaq. Except that KZfaq usually deletes most of my more interesting comments 🤣🤣🤣

Agree with all you said here, but would also like to speak up for the power of "internet detectives" especially in relation to motorbikes. There have been a spate of motorbike thefts, and a number of incidents of them being recovered quickly, due to details being shared on Facebook.

I don't follow the news so have no idea about missing people or anything for that matter. People always have an opinion though, and social media gives them a platform to share it... I imagine that the police etc must have filters to reduce the amount of conspiricy theorists input though

As with most things, i think people have always been like this. We just see it more now because of the internet. Makes it easier than ever to share your own bullshit, and also easier to see other peoples bullshit as well as news and things almost instantly where not too long ago, you'd be waiting untill the news was on, or untill you read tommorows newspaper.

The real problem is when people do fancy themselves as *amateur* sleuths end up by little more worth than conspiracy theorists or psychics. The people you referenced were often fictional maverick police or crime detection officials (Colombo, Quincy, Kojak), or sleuths who had a substantial relationship and track record with the police (Miss Marple, Holmes). By watching these fictional worlds - which are puzzles set by authors and screenwriters, designed to show their sleuths as victorious and intrepid - people imagine that they can be just as successful. It’s like people watching a presidential speech, believing that they can become president; even worse, watching The West Wing. Or seeing BoJo fumble his way through a speech, tell untruths to a committee or the public with a boyish smirk, believing that they are the qualities of a good Prime Minister.
