A little late to the party, I finally got round to playing Far: Changing Tides. It's a fairly traditional sequel that's definitely worth your time. Yet one particular moment stuck out to me.
Special thanks to ‪@Zoltiboi‬ for the thumbnail!
Thanks to Kevin from ‪@PixelLit‬ and ‪@hotcyder‬ and for help with After Effects Magic for the opening logo!
Thanks to ‪@retrohistories‬ and co for helping me with other games where the wind pushes you back. Apologies none of it made it into the final video! :(

Gris absolutely did this too. They first section's challenge was based on pressing forward in a wind zone. What made that work for me was how overcoming related the character to the little rock guys that walked around the level with you. I think lots of 2D limbo-likes want to have that one moment from Journey at the end of the game. Just doesn't really work on the same way when you're playing solo imo

I mean... you undersell it but that is a helluva sharp observation

Dang, I've never heard of this series before, but it looks fascinating. I'm gonna need to look at these games.

There's a disconnect that happens whenever a game suddenly presents you with something undeniably... gamey... in a way that doesn't fit with the rest of the design. It's why the pipe hacking from BioShock is so maligned, or why you very much notice the number of cover points in an arena in Uncharted. They aren't there because it suits the themes or the narrative, they're part of a video game. Feels like the game yanking you out of a comfortable place/experience to make you Do Some Work for it. Great video!

I find that wind currents can be a good tool for puzzles where you are, for example, rearranging pipes so the wind there can push you in the right way or something. Other than that, the frustration of the wind pushing you back is just way too much for me too. Excellent little video on a pet peeve that most of us share.

Have you played Pathologic? I find that game fascinating because the game almost relishes the prospect that its adversity is so all-encompassingly miserable you WILL give up. It’s preemptively proud that it will defeat you, will sap your will to fight on.

All us video essayists are aware of Pathologic. Therr are two opinions: 1) its their favorite game ever, 2) they are too scared to even trying playing it, out of respect. I... am number 2

The moment for me felt a bit flat. *spoiler warning* After having to carry on alone without the supposed safety of the ship, the worst that the world could throw at you was the heavy wind trope. If you had to cobble together something to proceed or had a lurking oppressor, it might have been a stronger all is lost moment. Also, having the ship come back as if nothing has happened at the end pushed the moment into the pad the run time sorta feel. Having blurted out all this, I'm neither a game dev nor remotely artistic, so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.
