When to be Tight in BJJ Side Control VS When to Be Loose

When should you be tight, and when should you lighten up in side control in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu? This is the question for today's video. And it's a good one. Oftentimes it feels good, safe, to really squeeze someone in side control. But it limits the mobility you have to snag submissions. On the other hand, being too loose allows space for the person to move but opens up more opportunities for escapes.
Like most positions in BJJ there is a balance you have to strike and use different focuses like a set of tools. And in this video I'll give you a few ideas to chew on in regards to using side control effectively and when it's a good idea to be ultra-tight and when it might be better to loosen up just a bit to go on the offensive.
Hope the video helps with your training.

I've heard BJJ often described as being like chess. I think of it more like a Rubik's cube. You get one side of the cube done. Then, as you adjust the cube to start making progress on the other sides, you mess up the one you had...and then you return it to its correct spot. In BJJ I've noticed you get position, then you loosen up to adjust one hand, arm, leg, or whatever; and then you tighten back up before adjusting the next thing.

I really appreciate the way you break things down slowly and at various angles for us newbies. There is always an explanation too for why you are in a position and/or why you are using it.

One of my favorite things is "floating". when you're on top position and the person on bottom tries to escape out, you loosen up on your holds and almost bodysurf on them and maintain top position.

Love the comment about relaxing when they have the strong pressure position. I can honestly this has not helped my game as a whole but it's also taught me patience. My worst trait ever is patience since starting Jiu Jitsu and learning to relax and wait it's helped my patience outside the gym.

Such a comprehensive video chewy. I'm not sure if it was your intention but it showed me new ways to add pressure as well as the point you were making. Thank you!

So so important, I learnt over time to chill when in top side and things got a lot more exciting for me. Collecting arms and kimuras came much easier.

As a blue belt 💙 What i can say for people starting out is when I first started i was tense. But after a few months I trained my self to stay loose 24/7 when rolling and that way it is super easy to tell when you need too be tight, and yes you will get tapped out alot in the beginning but you learn more from it all and you have to put your need to win aside. But if your tight 24/7 your not learning much and your wasting so much energy. Now I'm just a blue belt so if I'm wrong and this isn't efficient please tell me so I don't lead anyone the wrong way 😁 stay safe have fun and thanks chewy for your awesome videos I've watched you and you've helped me get through white belt and ill stick to it till the end of my life ❤🤘

Love this. I am a new white belt and I'm struggling with the relaxing thing. I can get myself into good positions but my submissions are so limited and anyone with more than two stripes can see them coming a mile away so I just tense up and survive.

Takeaways: - Even from a dominant position, a player can't optimally control and attack his opponent at the same time. To control, he must abandon at least some ability to attack, and to attack, he must abandon at least some ability to control - Therefore, every attack is an opportunity to escape - Provided both players know some attacks and escapes from a given position, positional fights are generally going to be won or lost on the basis of *timing* attacks vs escapes - The player who better controls the other player's mobility (via pins, guards, dominant grips, etc) gets to initiate the attack/escape opportunity by relinquishing some control - If the dominant player insists on maintaining control of the current position, the dominated player can take the opportunity to frame up, relax, and breathe (unless they have to make something happen right away) until the dominant player decides to attack - If the dominated player needs to make something happen right away, inviting (baiting) an attack is a high risk/high reward option, banking on his escape beating his opponent's attack
