As experienced on older models with self-steering tag axles, only three instances would you raise the tag. 1- Making sharp turns at slow speed, 2- When moving in reverse, and 3- Loss of traction / Wheel slip ie; icy road surface. All other times, that tag axle must be on the ground and inflated for stability, weight distribution, and braking. Today's modern coaches/buses have ABS braking which assists with traction control by automatically adjusting air-bag pressure as needed to put more weight on drive-axle for better traction. They also have a reverse switch so when the transmission is placed in reverse, it automatically raises tag-axle to prevent wheel binding from un-commanded steering.

Confused! Lift the tag on tight ends turns to reduce tire wear? Some companies are steerable tags to aid in tighter turns? So loose that on Prevost? What about tire scuff with steerable tags? Pros and cons of both? Please enlighten me or make mew Utube explainging. Thank you.

Andy I envy you. You have my dream job. I love gadgets and I love Prevost. In fact, I drove a charter bus (Prevost) for 12 years because it's the only way I could be close to a Prevost. Sad, I know. I enjoy listening to your knowledge and experiences. When I hit the lottery, I will see you on the road. Keep up the good work.

At the very end he made a comment about entering a driveway with a slight rise but I'm confused as to whet6her he meant to say lift the tag axle or don't lift it. Our driveway has a slight rise over a culvert then levels out. It's not much but there is a slight rise. So do I lift the tag or leave it down? I will be making as sharp of a turn as I can.

After nearly two years of shopping I chose to go with a pre-owned Prevost. I found a 2014 Marathon at the Prevost Stuff show and made the purchase just a few weeks later. I came close to buying a new Foretravel Realm and strongly considered a new Winnebago Grand Tour, but am very happy with my decision. Here's a video that explains why it may make sense to purchase a pre-owned Prevost over a new Class A motorhome. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j7VxnbSetZ2Yknk.html

I lift the tag for ALL turns. But be aware that lifting your tag axle while applying the brakes will affect your stopping distance. Not necessarily a danger, but you need to be aware of the change in dynamics.

Why not get use a Steering drop axle, lots of Tri axles and quad axles have them. This way you have a great turning radius, no scuffing don't have to lift ju t at all one and done.

Does Prevost offer an Active Steer Tag Axle?
@TheGadgetGuru
@TheGadgetGuru 7 жыл бұрын
The short answer is, No. The more complicated answer is that I found it really doesn't need one as the drivability of this coach is excellent. I'll be the first to admit that I have a lot of respect for the turning axle found on Newell coaches, but I was surprised that when simply lifting the tag while turning or when in tight parking situations, how well the Prevost handles.
@GeorgeMiklas

The MCI E had the active steering tag standard, and optional on the J. I love the active steering tag and wish that all coaches had it. That being said, lifting the tag on my Prevost accomplishes the same advantage for turning radius.

Newmar has had passive steer option tag axle since at least 2015. Not sure whether Prevost has made this available. I'm not sure how old Andy's Prevost is, however there are a lot of late 1990s and 2000s Prevost coaches in excellent condition out there, so it is quite possible Andy's was built before rear axle steering, if available on Prevost, was introduced.

"The more complicated answer is that I found it really doesn't need one as the drivability of this coach is excellent..." /\ This is about the most dismissively, non-factual statement I have ever heard on the subject. Prevost chose, quite deliberately not to put a steering tag on their coaches for one reason only. It will hurt their profit margin. The band-aid electronics to "assist" the driver in tag axle situations, is, laughable. There is absolutely no question that a steering tag is beneficial to ANY make or model of coach, especially at the 45' length. Listening to this guy, or, even the guy from Prevost makes me feel like I am in kindergarten, as a teenager listening to reasons why mommy says it's best not to ask the teacher anything complicated, Once you have a steering tag, you'll realize that parking, especially parallel and tight right hand turns in city situations makes all the luxury in a modern coach go out the window if you don't have it, period.

Mark, my opinions are based on driving multiple brands of coaches that include various techniques for the tag axle. As you'll see in my Newell videos, there's no doubt in my mind that Newell's steering axle is a noteworthy feature and it's one that "steers" people to its brand. Why doesn't Prevost offer this feature? That may be a good question for a future video. However, when I produced the Newell series, I hadn't at that time spent any seat time in a Prevost. So far in my 4,500 miles in this bus, I haven't been in an single situation where I felt I needed the steering axle. While I'm not an engineer, I'm to understand it's a complex design and I've come to appreciate the simplicity of many of the features on my Prevost and the solid ride and handling characteristics. During my travels in this Prevost, I've learned that during tight maneuvers, lifting the tag decreases the turning radius just enough to clear common obstacles. On a related note, visibility is a major part of drivability and a factor in tight cornering. It's my opinion that the Prevost I'm driving provides a higher level of "mirror" visibility than the Newell's I drove. While this can vary based on the height of the driver and the seat position, I can only provide my personal opinion. In regard to the "kindergarten" statement, please note this is a series for Newbies. I fully understand those who are experienced with maneuvering motorhomes may find this information basic. However, those who find drivability as a concern may appreciate the explanations provided in this video and others in my newbies series.
