Just did my Labor Day throw down!!! And herein Long Island we are def in the down swing on temps. 80’s yesterday. But the next few weeks show mid to high 70’s only. Had a good amount of nutsedge and crabgrass come up in last month. In my front yard. So I am gonna spray tenacity. And early October I will aerate and thatch and overseed. My backyard I haven’t done anything too cause my dog and kids have taken over. And I basically have like 70% crabgrass. So basically I am gonna do the same steps in back. Just it’s gonna take a couple seasons to get it back. Tons of rain here last few weeks. Hurricane and Ida dumped like a foot of rain.

Between 2 hurricanes and tons of 90+ high humidity days I’ve had a terrible Pythium Blight outbreak. I’ve stopped watering all together even being 2 weeks into seeding in hopes to dry it out. Any other suggestions. It’s a nasty disease that creates the white cotton looking fungus and is spreading/killing a lot of my new beautiful grass. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks

Hey Ryan! Heavy fertilizing in the fall makes total sense, the only that I have come across by doing this is snow mold. I live in the northeast and have had trouble with snow mold several times which was directly related to my fall fertilizing. I know that using a fungicide is an option, but for me at least, I have already used the recommended doses for the calendar year to fight off mid-summer brown patch. Anyway, any strategies you might have to explore would likely be useful to some folks like me and possibly good content for a video. Thanks again for the great advice!
@thomaspaquette9991
@thomaspaquette9991 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure how tall, or which height you usually keep your lawn but stepping down that mowing height as the temperatures decrease can help avoid snow mold. I live in Minnesota and had problems years ago with snow mold and found the shortest I could get my lawn before the snow fell the better off my lawn was. Always use quick release fertilizers especially later into the fall season.
@sabingratz
@sabingratz 2 жыл бұрын
@@thomaspaquette9991 Thanks Thomas, I actually keep my grass at .5 inch for most of the season, and definitely put it to bed in the fall at that height. Good tip on quick release though, thanks.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 2 жыл бұрын
With that height it really will need some sort of fungicide to be completely clean by spring. You can likely find another class of fungicide that you haven't used yet on your lawn that will not factor into that max that you used with your other products.

@sabingratz 2 жыл бұрын

I am starting my sort-of-renovation project this weekend! I am a little nervous about it since I have never done anything like this before. I am going mower at a lower level and then dethatch. I am then going to do a little leveling work. After which I am going to spray the crabgrass with Tenacity. Once that is done I will overseed with the KY Blue that I bought. I think I will wait till the next weekend before putting down the Milorganite, to give the seeds a little time to germinate before the current grass goes on a growing spurt.

I've been watching your channel for a lil while now, thanks for sharing your knowledge, I've been procrastinating to do a lawn level in the front of my home before deciding what's next. I currently have Bermuda, weeds and God knows what else growing in the yard....tall fescue seems to be the most popular lawn seed sold at the local home centers here in middle TN. Thanks for these videos, Ryan. Lot's of great info! In my case here in NJ, I'm a bit confused about what I need to be doing right now. It's been a rough summer, and my lawn seeded last year took a beating. It was really nice in the spring, but now I need to spray for crabgrass and other invasives and overseed, too. This week will still be hot, but I'm guessing it will start to cool off soon after. What should I do first? Should I spray now and hold off with the overseeding? How long should I wait? And what about fertilizing? I'm always worried about the order of things and timing it with the weather. Thanks.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 2 жыл бұрын
If you crabgrass is really mature by this point it might be tough to get a handle on it. You can certainly try spraying it but just know it might not be 100% effective on fully mature stuff. I would probably go after tenacity/quinclorac at the time of overseeding or start on quinclorac now and get the overseeding done in the next couple of weeks. Starter fertilizer also at the time of seeding or a few days after is what works best for me. You might be interested in my renovation and full season guides for some more in depth info. Thanks for watching!

Another question, would Simple Lawn Solutions Lawn Food 16-4-8 be good for a Fall program? Planning on the Milorganite 1st, then every 2 week using some like this until I hit Thanksgiving.

I bought a house that 15 years ago had a perfect kbg sod lawn. The next owner only hacked it down a few times a year. Ive got it looking pretty good no weeds etc. I used my sunjoe to scarify it. got piles of dead grass out. problem is the thatch layer is 3/4 of an inch. its hard to push a screw driver through. any ideas? ohio

Hi Ryan, thank you for the great Fall season tips! Question, if I still see large areas of brown patch in my cool season lawn, will it go away on its own as temperatures cool and humidity drop or should I address it now w/ an app of azoxystrobin???

As temps/humidity go down your disease pressure should as well but if it's already in large areas I would probably treat it

Hi ryan , i just ordered your guide!!! I live in Merrillville in. Im not sure if i have fungus or heat stress. I have spot sprayed my weeds. shoud i wait til it gets cooler to see it is actually fungus or heat stress. And what fungicide do you recommend. Thank you.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 2 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one because there's a lot of variables and fungus types. I would see if you see any specific spots on the grass blades instead of overall just brown and try to do some searching of photos if you do see spots or lesions.

Very similar to when I start fertilizing would be a good time to dethatch if it's needed. You want the temps to be starting to cool so recovery can happen

Need advice. On Sept 2 Landscaper company did Core Aeration and Overseeding with Turf Tall Fescue over established lawn and to fill in some Brown spots where there was no grass due to Strong August Sun. I live in Connecticut near NY State line. I bought an oscillating sprinkler and a timer and set schedule to water 3 times a day (morning, afternoon and eveing) for 15 min. Today is Sept 14 - its been 12 days and I can see germination as occurred. I assume most of the seed has germinated since it was 85% Turf Tall Fescue. My established lawn needs to be mowed due to all the watering but by Brown -bald spots have only few seeds germinated and even when grass is fully grown, I don't think it will fully cover the bald spot area. So my question is do I wait until the new seed grows to point where I can mow the lawn (which it needs) and then re-seed the bald spots with seed and start the process again, 3x/day water, or do I seed the brown spots now with new seed (to try and get fuller coverage) knowing that my established lawn will have grown alot and wait till new seed grows in to mow (by that time established lawn will be in desperate need of a mow)?

Hey Ryan, I have been watching your videos for a good while now(feels like years). I have recently purchased a new home and put down some blue grass sod last year. I have been working from your videos but using local sourced materials here in the state of Utah for fertilizers. Would your cool season plan work for me here in the state of Utah? My lawn is actually holding up quite well considering the type of year we’ve had with the higher than normal drought. But I would like to keep it looking as good as possible. Any help and advice would be great. Thanks for all you do to help support other lawn enthusiast!

Hey Ryan, great info! I have a more unique question if you have a moment: I have both Creeping Charlie and wild violet issues that I want to get eliminated with a T-Zone application. But I can't seed for three weeks after the application. Do you think it's possible to apply T-Zone (as I think you did with charlie) about now and then seed in perennial rye/blue grass in mid/late September and have it good to go in Spring? I'm a little north of you in southern Wisconsin.
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 2 жыл бұрын
Typically you want 8-10 weeks before frost as far as seeding goes. I would almost go with the grass and try to deal with the weeds at a later time.

I'm here in NYC and plan on overseeding this spring (I did in the fall as well). My plan is spray Tenacity 2x and overseed. Can and should I apply a different pre emergent such as Prodiamine after 30 days to hold off the weeds until I apply Tenacity again in the Fall when I overseed again? Thank you

I lam from Montreal Quebec, Canada. I am new to landscaping I.e seeding a bare lawn. I did seed my bare lawn(completely new lawn) in mid august and it turned out quiet good. I haven’t used any starter fertilizer when seeding the lawn. It’s been around 5 weeks from the day I seeded the lawn. Also, I did mow the grass yesterday. My question is should I apply starter fertilizer now and skip fall fertilizer or should I just apply fall fertilizer or should I skip both starter fertilizer and fall fertilizer for this year? If I have to apply fall fertilizer, what ratio is good? Can you please advise? Thanks,

Best option would be to use something like tenacity and quinclorac and still be able to seed. Both of those are ok at the time of seeding. The other option would be to just focus on weeds for now and building the turf that you do have and not do any seeding this fall.
