Hi! I'm Heidi from Healing Harvest Homestead, and in this video, I give you an overview of the benefits and uses of both elderberry and echinacea. Both of these herbs are powerful immune modulators and boosters to have ready to go for cold and flu season this upcoming year!
Find out the differences between them and why they work so well together....and learn how to make a powerful tincture to have ready to go!
Here's a couple of fun facts to get you started:
Echinacea helps boost phagocytosis in your blood stream and helps fight bacterial infections.
Elderberry is an incredibly immune-modulator and contains powerful anti-viral properties as well.

So, I have frozen elderberries. Of course they make great syrup. But can they be used to make tincture as well? Will they contain too much water? While I love the benefits of elderberry syrup, I’m wondering if tincture has benefits beyond or differing from syrup?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, D! I actually prefer the tincture of elderberry over the syrup, myself. I just don't like a lot of sugar, and the tinctures are so fast to take, too---and you don't need to take as much. I recommend dehydrating them first, if you can; as this will help to deactivate any of the glycosides they may contain. Some people are worried about this. I have never had an issue with any elderberry preparation, but it's a consideration. As far as benefits? Well, I think as long as you are taking a similar amount of actual elderberry constituent, it's one and the same. For syrup, you would have to take a bit more than a tincture, as tinctures are just stronger.

I actually added both herbs to this particular tincture, with the intent of only using upon feeling an illness coming on. Normally, I keep plenty of both also tinctured separately for use as needed for the herb.

For children, elderberry syrup or the gummies are my favorite. As Ocean Twins stated, too, glycerine is a good substitute and is sweet. Just be sure you're buying food grade that is labeled for internal use. There are different types of glycerine out there.

Wondering how much of each ingredient you use and what is the strength of the final product?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 2 жыл бұрын
I use roughly equal parts if I tincture them together. And I fill the jar just a little under half way. This makes a very strong tincture, especially the longer you let it infuse. I generally infuse for a minimum of 6 weeks

Can you take this Echinacea & Elderberry tincture everyday like an Elderberry syrup ?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Chico! No, with the echinacea, you only want to take that when you are getting sick. It's not really helpful taken every single day. Now the elderberry is different---it works all the time. So this combination is best to start taking right when you feel you are coming down with something.

Is it true that you can use vinegar also?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can certainly use vinegar as a solvent for your elderberry/echinacea. It won't be called a tincture, though. Instead this is referred to as an acetum. AND, if you want a really tasty infusion with vinegar, use some honey as well. This is an oxymel, and is one of my favorite ways to take elderberry/echinacea. It's not as sweet as a syrup, yet not as harsh as a vinegar. You can find directions here, along with other cold/flu info: bit.ly/2PyuGYZ
