I hope you get there someday, it's an amazing country to visit. I went for the first time in August 2018 and even though it was VERY hot, I still had a great time. Lots of awesome things to see, do and eat over there.

I went in late march which is a perfect time to see the cherry blussom, having snow around Nikko/Nagano and having a spring like weather in Miyazaki to surf.

My first trip was in October 2018 for 2 weeks, I will be going again in October 2020 for 3+ weeks! I will be using the 21 day JR pass and riding the shinkansen a few times! Nice breakdown of the months japan-guide!

I lived in musashino city just outside Tokyo for seven months in the 90's and could never get to see everything now I'm in Hawaii and take a direct flight ANA a380 airbus every November for two weeks and still haven't seen everything.the only difference I see now it is a lot more touristy, but I'm glad a lot more people are experiencing this fantastic country.

Last year I went to Japan two times, in January and October. The weather was very pleasant in January with good visibility for miles. However, it was cold outdoors and hot indoors so I had to wear / remove my winter wear very often, which itself was additional baggage. Days were short and the sun was always shining at a low angle. Due to the prolonged summer season last year the typhoon season arrived in Japan late during October and it was raining every day when I was there. On one day, the rope-way I had planned to ride on was cancelled due to bad weather. Autumn foliage was far and few, with better chances at higher altitudes. This year I plan to visit Japan in April and November. Hope all goes well.

I'm having hard time deciding between spring and fall, because on the other hand I really really want to see the cherry blossoms, and on the other hand traveling on fall would help to avoid the crowds. Ugh.

From personal experience, May is one of the best months to travel to Japan. Golden Week was brought up and was correct, however the weeks after Golden week are the best to travel, much less domestic travel, and foreign travel is not as high due vacation season still not being in season. And because of that airline tickets tend to be much cheaper those specific weeks. The weather is amazing, ranging from cool to warm, and rainy season doesn't come in full til mid June. Major matsuris you can see is the Sanja matsuri in Tokyo around the 2nd weekend of May and the toukasan matsuri in Hiroshima at the end of the month-early june. Definitely recommend traveling around that time.

I was there at the beginning of November 2019. Traveling was easy, minus the rush hours in Tokyo but that's expected and we didn't book busses or shinkanzen tickets in advance though we should have going to Tokyo as we didn't get a great view of Mt. Fugi. Osaka and Tokushima were very pleasant with little tourists traffic, Nara was fun but a little busier and Kyoto was a nightmare, jammed with tourists. Not sure if that's normal for Kyoto in November but if I did it again I'd stay away from the tourist sites there.

If it's your first travel to Japan, Autumn may be less stressful because it's less crowded, it's easier to get a better place to stay, easier to plan your transportation around Japan, the prices on everything are usually lower and so on. Also, you don't have to feel sad about choosing. You can always keep your second choice for the next time, keeping you in high spirits ^^

I would say sakura season is most stressful if there is a place you "must" see in full bloom and if you have solid dates for specific locations. It's better to gather a wide variety of options, even in different regions. During the cherry blossom season there are websites that track the blossoms from day to day, so if you familiarize yourself with that AND look at the weather forecast, it is not difficult to find a nice place with good weather and full blossoms, even if it wasn't the place you were hoping to visit (with the Japan Rail Pass, the cost of going to a different region with better weather and blossoms will not be a burden either). If you have your heart set on a single location, the timing plus weather conditions will sometimes ruin your plans.

We love January as the weather is perfect in Tokyo and areas south. We have gone before in the summer and fall and the heat and humidity was just too much for us to handle.

I have most enjoyed end of August to early October. Not generally too hot. There is a lot to do. The only trick is watch out for Australian and Chinese holidays as Japan gets a lot of their tourists on those holidays. The difference can be huge for amounts of tourists.

Hi! Thank you for your video, it was helpful as always! Next year, I will have my second trip to Japan by the oder: Osaka -> Nara -> Kyoto -> Yokohama -> Tokyo. I follow all of your autumn report about the leaves changing color throughout several years and I noticed that the leaves in Kyoto tend to change very late in November and Tokyo in early December, so I will start my trip at 22 November in the Kansai region and then move to Tokyo by December, is it good enough to see the leaves changing color in all the spots? I see that the forest come to there peak and overpeak very fast so I kinda worry :'(

My first time was in Fall 2015 (three weeks in November). Next year I had the chance to go in Spring 2016 (last week of March & two weeks in April). Third time was in Winter 2017 (mid-December 1017 to mid-January 2018). And finally, last year once again in Spring 2019 (three weeks in April). I avoid summer for the heat

@@ayleene100 As promised, here we go: November 2015 (three weeks) Wasn’t my first choice (sakura season it is), yet it was the 2nd season most recommended in most sites (japan-guide.com included). The weather was nice, only a couple of days with heavy rain (Tokyo, Osaka and Hiroshima), the rest of my journey had clear skies and sunny days, my favorites. Back then the prices were great (still are), yet the tourist movement was beginning to grow steady. I used mostly hostels, with rates from 2200 yen/night to 4000 yen/night, and a two-night stay in Nagasaki’s JR hotel with 8000 yen/night. Crows were few and far between, maybe just the very popular places like Asakusa, Fushimi Inari and most famous castles (if the weather was nice of course). October/November and March/April/May are the best seasons to visit Japan.

March/April 2016 (three weeks) The season I wanted to visit the most and believe me, it was all worth it. Being in my second trip in less than 5 months, prices stayed the same. The weather was beautiful almost every day (the same as my 2019 trip), with only one or two days with rain and cloudy skies. The cherry blossoms were awesome; aside from Tokyo, I went to Hakone, Hiroshima (again), Fukuoka, Himeji (the castle it’s worth the 1000-yen tag), Osaka, Kyoto, and Mt. Fuji (the outskirts in Kawaguchiko). If you like the cherry blossoms and hanami, this is the season for you. For obvious reasons, the crows were more prominent here, despite that, my experience wasn’t damped by it.

From personal experience I feel that the "goolden week" dread is a little bit too hyped up. Last year it fell right into my 20 days vacation there, and even if there was a lot of people, I didn't feel overwhelmed or anything like that. I think it's because of the japanese way of organizing things that kept everything in top notch working condition. I used my JR Pass and booked every train, but I would have done the same even without the fear of the golden week because I just think it is easier and much more stress free that way. Moreover, those were the days of the era change and so they told me it would be extra packed... but I didn't feel that way, so, in my opinion, if you find cheap tickets, it is still a good period to go given the fair weather and lovely people.
