Thank you for this guide. Generally, cold compress is known to apply right after getting fresh injury and then it's confusing about the day when to apply the heat or contrast therapy. Your rationale is helpful to understand these basics

What about the comments around icing actually delaying the healing process? "American sports doctor Dr Gabe Mirkin coined the term ‘RICE’ in 1978. However, he backtracked on his initial hypothesis in 2015, writing that ice ‘may delay healing, instead of helping’"

Yeah, using Ice is outdated, despite it still being wide-spread in it's use by fitness experts and medical professionals. Avoid it entirely for sports injuries. Ice's only value in injuries is analgesia, or in otherwords, pain-relief. If you're an athlete and your goal is to get back into the field or on the pitch ASAP, don't use ice. At all. If you don't really do much exercise, you've got an office job and won't be straining the injury much but it's really hurting, then you can use ice in this instance. It will help with the pain, making it less distracting and easier to live with while it heals and you're not in a rush to return to 100% physiological strength.

This is by far the best video on this subject I have seen. Thanks a lot. I have a queation. Since Injury to healing is always a complex journey depending upon what kind of injury it is..can we say that ice may not be a better option but ice will always comtribute towards healing process? Meaning heat can sometimes worsen injury but ice would never.

I don't think we have enough evidence to say that - it's not really been researched that well.

I don't know if ice can make the injury worse as in it can't make the injury go backwards, but it absolutely can be and is negative and it slows the processing of healing in almost every case.

It’s been the 10th day now since I sprained my ankle. I started doing rehab exercises and it helps really alot. I can do everything espcially the heel raise exercise without any pain at all. But the thing is there is still a little bit of swelling. What do I do to get rid of it? Should I do the contrast therapy?

I can't help without assessing you. Rest your knee and go see a doctor or physiotherapist. You will get better more quickly if you have a treatment plan that is specific for you.

So basically first 5 days after injury apply cold and after the those 5 days apply heat and the time limit is 10 minutes on and off.
