A shotgun is a very effective combat weapon.

No it isn't. Most soldiers, especially SF don't use it in actual combat. The canister shot is mainly used to improve aim for killing birds and at the same time to avoid doing too much damage with normal bullets so that there's meat on the bird. You need killing power which is never guaranteed with canister shot even against non armored enemies unless at very close range which rarely ever happens and even if it did, a guy with a knife has a better chance at killing you. Wounding them doesn't incapacitate them either.

@@IRussian007 Yes but they dont use normal cannister shot but heavier loads like S.G. and Brenneke. The Brenneke is for large game and the S.G. for smaller. Both would take a man down in a combat situation.

@@BradBrassman Have you seen this happen outside of movies and games? And why don't I see the military use it? I mean the US. is fighting against unarmored men, why issue armalites instead? Why don't special forces use them? Seems like something must be weak about them, or at least powerful but not practical in combat.

Not realistic in that situation. Most probably an Infantry Captain deployed in the European Theater of Operations (ETO) would be armed with a Thompson SMG.

That's one of the biggest secrets of World War II. We Americans had homing bullets that could hit a German or Japanese soldier 800 yards, behind a rock, with artillery screaming all around them. That same technology also produced a hidden force field that made the Germans and Japanese miss point blank shots, while making them stand there like a silhouette while the Americans took aim and fired. That's what I've gotten from over 50 years of watching war movies.

My grandfather served in the war on the German side. He did not like Hitler, or fascism, or remotely the situation! Yet he was fighting and was responsible for all the men in a one kilometer radius. He only did his duty after Germany annexed Austria. He hated war above all. Do we look like the enemy to you? Am I scarring you by being german or am I suddenly less worth? No matter what propaganda there is to manipulate us into thinking we’re not all humans but one is just “the enemy” we need to remember that humans are humans no matter on what side, or behind what curtain... even an iron curtain...

Soldiers are not constantly fighting. Most Waffen SS soldiers where fighting in the east and the ones that where stationed at the west had little experience of actual battle except the some of the old SS divisions that stayed in Europe after the fall of France and didn’t really go east. 3rd SS Totenkopf is a good example of a German division to be continuously replaced by non-experienced soldiers. At the Demyansk Pocket like 5% of the division was left alive and more than half never recycled into the division again. They filled them up with as much men again as before with less experience.
