I like writing scenes out of order because it gives me motivation to reach those points, and in fact it helps me come up with good reasons to reach those points in the story leading up to it.

I always have detailed scene ideas before I even start outlining, so I write them all down, out of sequential order, in a separate document, and label them. For instance: 131. #hospital #mid-point #protagonist #feelings #angst Then I outline, and when I write my first draft, I already have some scenes mostly written. Obviously, those often need readjusting so as to fit in with the rest of the draft, and some never make it to the final draft at all.

Scrivener lets you outline out of order and fill in scenes as the mood strikes. At some point, I've got enough "flesh on the bones" I go back to the beginning, go from outline mode to text mode and expand each chapter, usually in order. I do get ideas for new scenes as I write, though. when that happens I jump to that point and write as much as I know. If I don't know where it goes, I label it accordingly and put it at the end, in a folder, either one called "ideas" or "new scenes."

I write fanfiction and i think is so worth it!! It's free, it's lovely, it helps you writting better! I learned a LOT writing fanfiction for 12 yrs now and i don't regret it nor i'm ashamed of it. I read fanfiction and i see a lot of young writers doing justice to my fav characters and they're so good. Some published authors can't create a peace of fiction that's as good as some of fanfictions i've read! And i'm glad you mentioned fanfiction, made me really happy, thank you

Yes! Writing out of sequential order! I do that! Or rather : my mind makes me do that, because I would much rather be naturally inclined to do things in the proper order. I agree with Abbie, it can be detrimental to stop yourself from writing that scene because you will drag your feet forcing yourself to work on your outline instead. I also feel like when you go back to working on your outline after writing that scene you wanted so badly to get out on the page, it can be very enriching to revisit the ideas you had at that moment. Some of them will fit perfectly into the plot you constructed and you will be happy to see that your writing instincts haven't failed you. And some of them will not because you outgrew them and moved your story in a different direction. It's a constructive process either way. (Btw, reading Lisa Cron at the moment and loving it, thank you Abbie!)

I most definitely write scenes out of order. I'm three chapters into the first draft of my first novel, and I've already written the epilogue. I also skip over scenes I'm not in the mood to write, and work on a future scene I'm really excited about. Then I go back later and write whatever connecting scenes I need to. That really seems to have a positive outcome on my pacing and structure, and often my connecting scenes are better written the first time around this way. I first started writing on an old site called Quizilla, where I would post a new chapter each week for people to read. Spending all those years forcing myself to write every scene in order, I learned a lot about making things connect in a believable and engaging way. So now writing out of order is no problem for me. I have friends who only write in-order who think I'm nuts, but even they can admit I write a lot more and have more solid structure doing it that way.

My current story has like... 3-4 endings. I can't decide where to end it. XD In my first book I wrote things in linear order, but I find myself writing random scenes here and there in the book in my second one. Weird. But it seems to work too. :D Just like in art, I think people think too much about their "style" sometimes. Just write, you have your own style. It shows in the words you chose, the sentence structure, the way you build a story (or art). You might not be able to see it yourself, but it's there. :) Oh gosh, my characters frown and nod their heads all the time. XD I have edited out sooo much of that. XD

My writing style depends on my character pov. I have some that just wear me out. I get in their head and they take over ME. I start blasting words on the page and their ideas, word choice and opinions never are anything like mine. I always have to go back and edit the prose because they "write' differently than I do. This lets that blonde 18 year old young lady go all fashionista and judgmental and then a day later I am channeling a frustrated old man who hates life because he took no chances when he was young.

I am a novice writer finding my style. What I do after an outline is to list the chronology of the scenes (the main ones) and determine why they are important, either to establish the relationship between characters or drive the plot forward. Then I will craft the scene like a screenplay, just dialogues, so that when I write it in narrative, I already know what the scene would look like. I just have to insert introspection, descriptions, etc. I use Celtx in writing the scenes in screenplay format.

I deffinitely DO write scenes out of sequence. I will have a great idea, or I will be in the mood to work on that scene, and I feel like I need to do it at that time. You can always add to it later or take something out as you continue writing. Sometimes, even with an outline, I will have new ideas to add as I go. So my story does change.

Your point about only including non verbal cues that are important to characterization is great. It's really an effective yet simple standard for cutting out redundant descriptions. I would say that sometimes (if there are none) you might put in a non verbal purely for the sake of breaking up the dialogue, but probably in that case you should think of something more interesting for the characters to do, like fiddling with a desk bauble only to almost drop it rather than just shifting/smiling/looking/shrugging.

Such a timely offering, but I could probably say that about every one of your videos, Abbie :) I'm sure I could sit and listen to you talk about writing all day, because you make it engaging as well as informative. At this point, I'm 105K words into the first draft of the third book in my Pigeon Grove series. Phew, that's a mouthful. And with three chapters left to write, I'm simultaneously excited and terrified. I'm not ready to "leave" these characters yet, but I'm also doing my best to find that always elusive ending which leaves readers both satisfied and intrigued. Your advice, in this video and every other one you graciously share, it totally rocks. And the way you practice what you preach in "100 Days of Sunlight" only makes you that much more compelling to follow. Keep doing what you're doing, it's awesome ;)

They can be foreshadowing or give you something to anticipate in the story as you read it/give you the information that makes you understand why characters do certain things in the story, sort of like if you were to skip to the part right before the climax or the middle of the book and then reread it with that in mind.

I generally write scenes in order, but it's not uncommon for me to have a flash of inspiration about something later in the book. I'll usually just create a scene for it in Scrivener, write it, and stuff it aside until I get to that point. This is especially true when it comes to humor. I'll think of some funny story, or joke that I want to sneak into the story somehow, but I haven't planned it out.

Something I didn't notice I was doing in my own writing. I write from a 3rd person persepective which includes parts where the omniscient narrator is telling the story, then there are parts where the characters themselves are either talking or thinking to themselves or the story is being told by the narrator but specifically focusing on that character instead of the general story. I have a voice style for me as the omniscient narrator telling the story, but then when the narrator is telling the story with focus on each character, the voice style changes very slightly for each of those characters so even though its a 3rd person narrator telling the story in the same pattern, the reader can easily tell which character is involved or focused on because of the voice. also, sometimes the character themselves would be younger so their dialogue style is basic and their own inner thoughts are a little basic too but when I as the narrator, tell the story, the voice is as complex as my general style but there will be certain patterns of vocabulary, sentence use and ways to refer to other characters so I don't even need to take time to explain to the readers that something is refering to a specific character or event because its like reading a text from a friend where you just know who it is because of how they talk. I thought I had to keep my narrators voice the same across the board but because I naturally thought differently when connecting to my characters, the way I reacted and spoke about them changed too and it just became a sort of signature. a little example is when I ask a question kind of to myself. The reader can tell if i as the narrator am asking that or if the character thought it without me having to say something like 'and she/he thought'....

About writing scenes out of order... Edgar Allen Poe wrote a piece called "THE PHILOSOPHY OF COMPOSITION" where he dissects how he conceived and wrote the poem "The Raven". It is very fascinating because he details most of what was going through his head as he wrote each section of the poem. He even gets into why he chose the length, why he chose to write the ending first, etc. This is something that I think every writer should read, regardless of genre, or if it is poetry or a full novel: THE PHILOSOPHY OF COMPOSITION www.eapoe.org/works/essays/philcomp.htm

I write scenes out of sequential order all the time. What it does for me is keep me more motivated to write on some days since I get to write what is exciting for that day. Most of the time those "exciting" scenes are unlikely to be cut either, so I do not consider it much of a "risk" of wasted work when the text is later edited as a whole.

I definitely write scenes when they hit me and would suggest it to others. When inspiration comes don't let it go. As I outline there will be a bullet point that all of a sudden grows into an 1800 word chunk. Dialogue and all. Usually those chunks get directly copy and pasted to the first draft.

Hello! I have 2 questions. You can answer them if you want, either way would be great thanks 😊 Q1) I am in the process of plotting and I have 3 POV MCs one of them is a tree. (You know about driads right?) How would I (or anyone else) write about a character who can't physically leave their location. Thanks! (I also asked this question on the Kate and Abbie show, I'm 13 and not allowed to have Facebook and I don't have any $$$, so comments are the best for me, although you haven't really responded to any :) Q2) I'm trying to use the three act story structure for an immune system KZfaq series. (I'm a nerd..... Sue me) so far it is really hard since it needs to line up with the immune system process. Do you think that stories can still be good if there is only really character development- since I already have a plot right off the bat ( although I will do scene cards!!!) If you respond to this it would make my day, no, YEAR!!! Thanks in advance!!! -S 😘

I am writing a book with my friend and there is more then one main character. Each chapter is told as if the reader is the person. I don’t know what view to use because I want the reader to feel and be in the situation but how do I help the reader not get confused!! Also how do I transition from one scene to another when the character is being in the situation I don’t want to make a new chapter ever time the scene changes. For example in the book two characters get married but I didn’t want to show all of the stuff that happened next I just wanted to highlight that they got married! I made it into a separate chapter but the chapters really small so I don’t know what to do!! Please help me!!

Another helpful video the stories I have are varied in historical settings and overall feel, my heroes range from medieval knights to modern dairy farmers to Roman Centurions and heroines from boyishly built tomboys with swords to ex cons to widowed Romanian baronesses there's not a one size fits all voice for them

My computers are in their sea bags now. My boat was slowly sinking all year and as I worked on my stories was knee deep in water. I had to have a company repair things and Ian broke the dry dock and it had to be towed back n from Cuba. I listen to my computer conch shell missing my boat and have been using my tablet to write until my beach house gets a new roof. My writing style is so confusing. It’s all action. Reverse, flashbacks, and forward elements that act as control that anchors the story in a nice clam shell.

I write out of order! I try to keep to chronological order, but if I'll be more productive jumping ahead, I'd rather do that than stare at a blank word document.

Hey Abbie, I’ve been having a lot of trouble with point of view. I will think I understand it enough and then go write little scenes in my head at random and realize I switch POV halfway though and then get confused. Do you have any tips or helpful things that could help me out with this?

I do write scenes out of order. I have 10+ POVs so I write it in POV order to get voice and then I edit in order.

I could totally see someone spending time writing a scene out of sequence if that is part of the *climax*! I have a clear idea of what I want to happen in my climax *yet* I’m still slogging through Act One 🪓 trying to make the connections to that climax. Perhaps I should just get over myself and write that climax 🙃!

I get a scene in my head and then I work off that. I'm more of a panser. I edit a lot and I outline the important scenes though, instead of just pansing.

As you can see… I write too fast and too much and usually surprise myself when editing. Wow! What the hell is this? I finished the first actual manuscript and require a reader to go through it. I am in the process of tying in the second and third story as the first story is a three part that flows into eight stories that begin the first intro to the series.

If I'm getting this right, examples of a locked in writer's voice might be Earnest Hemingway and Tom Clancy. Even their non - fiction was identifiable. An example of a genre specific flexible voice that comes to mind is JK Rowling, comparing her Harry Potter world vs Cormoran Strike world voices. That make sense?

Hi Abbie, I just want to say I love your channel. But I want you to answer my question. I've been writing a few stories and posting them on Wattpad to get some feedback. Do you think as a good writer, it's good to post on Wattpad? I want to self publish my book in the future, so can you give me some tips on writing imagery and descriptively. Thanks. I would love it if you replied my comment. Once again, your channel is great.
