When will UK sockets have WAGO style connectors? - electricians comment

Everyone loves Wago 221 style connectors. So what's stopping UK wiring accessories having screwless connectors? Gary and Gordon explore the possibilities using a German Schuko socket from Jung.
Screwless terminals are available in loads of electrical equipment from lighting fixtures to DIN rail terminals - so why not the humble UK 13A socket.
Some viewers (with a bit of snow on the thatch) may remember the Corinthian range from Crabtree - the light switch had screwless terminals with a small red actuator to release the conductors.

Great video guys, undoubtedly this is the future but unfortunately the UK market is always way behind the rest of Europe when it comes to electrical installation products. @@aryehelectricalltd7247 that's incorrect and also misses the point. Firstly the video wasn't saying that sockets should have WAGO branded connections, but rather some form of toolless connection. As you said there must be something in the regs forbidding this or surely it would have been done by now? Have seen loads of times where you unscrew a socket face plate and find loose terminations or where somebody has "missed" the screw with the conductor and it's only loosely in between the screw and the barrel. This just makes all that go away and much better for testing or fault finding if you need to disconnect a leg on a ring for example. No brainer in my eyes and would happily pay the additional £1.50 or so that it would likely cost.

You can put Wagos in the backboxes, then test. Then the painters come and paint, then just one flexible cable from the Wagos in the backboxes to the socket. Far easier to fit. Wago type connectors are becoming very popular, as they are maintenance free terminals (they can go in inaccessible places) - and quick and easy to use. Put them directly on the back of a socket they *will* sell.

@@johnburns4017 so every connection is a spur?
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 3 жыл бұрын
@@GodIsBackAtAnfield Yes. The cable from the Wago junction in the backbox to the socket can take ~27A, while the outlet is limited to 13A. Not a problem. A disadvantage in rings is that if some screws work loose on a socket which is a junction on a ring, the ring's effectiveness can be reduced. Also a dangerous situation occurring as heavy current in the ring may create a spark. One one the 2.5mm cables may be overloaded as the mcb is 32A. Wagos do not work loose, so current around the ring will always be sound. Same on a 4mm radial with a 32A mcb. 4mm in and out of the Wago in the backbox with a flex 2.5mm cable into the socket. Easier to wire in in the confined spec of a backbox. Also testing and painting can be done, then return for the second fix - screwing in the sockets. Loose screwed connections is a big source of electrical fires.

You'd already save 1/3 of mounting time if you'd finally get rid of those useless ring mains.. all rest of the world does radials. Next step would probably be larger and less crammed fuse boxes that don't need a full replacement whenever something gets updated. And some day, you might even introduce three-phase service that's been common on the continent for the last 50 years or so.

@smile 2192 No surprise we use radials here in Sweden too. No problems with limitations on socket numbers other than lazy/cheap installation. We just have larger consumer units with more circuits. Sure there's more expense with more breakers, but that comes with added convenience in being able to isolate smaller areas. In my house, each room has a breaker with lights and sockets on it. Kitchen has a couple of circuits to allow for more simultaneous high power appliance usage.

@@MalikIdreesMasood lights and sockets are for each room are on the same circuit. Each standard room circuit is on a 10A MCB. All wiring on such a circuit is 1.5mm2. @@paulekstorm-hughes1894 @Mathias Anders British plugs cannot draw more than 13A. Fused spur switches off a ring for fixed appliances cannot draw more than 13A either (although you can draw more than 13A off a ring on one appliance with special provision). The plugs and fuse spur switches were made for rings in mind. When you design a ring you use diversity calculations, or just common sense. If a 32A ring has three sockets that regularly will be drawing 13A tripping the 32A mcb, then put in another ring. The average British house has three 32A rings. *1)* One for the heavy appliances in the kitchen: washing machine, dishwasher, tumble dryer and worktop, maybe an electric kettle. *2)* One for downstairs. *3)* One for upstairs. The upstairs and downstairs rings generally draw little current as only light appliances will be connected, like TV, computers, hairdryers, etc. Each appliance that plugs into the ring should have a fuse matching its current drawing, which could be 3A, 6A, 13A, etc. Mainly to protect the cable to the appliance to prevent the cable overheating, if over-current occurs. When builders put in three rings, an upstairs radial lighting circuit, a downstairs radial lighting circuit and a 6mm cable for the cooking appliance, all by rule of thumb, it works and is safe. You will find the consumer unit will have just *six* micro circuit breakers. Cheap and effective. Look in a French home of the same size. They have a huge consumer unit in comparison, with far more circuit breakers (mcb's), serving many radial circuits.
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulekstorm-hughes1894 We had to fit in sockets for a line of 10 computers. There was only one spare way in the consumer unit. We gave each computer 3A fuses in each plug, so a 32A ring did it wonderfully. Using radials a new larger Consumer Unit or an additional unit would have been needed. Which would have been great expense. A radial of 20A gives six sockets, not enough. We could have used 4mm cable and a 32A radial. But getting 4mm cable inside 10 daisy chained sockets? Forget it. Also 2.5mm cable in the UK is cheap. Cheaper to run to 10 sockets in a ring than one heavier 4mm cable. We could have put a few extra sockets on the ring with any problems. Rings are not illegal in any EU country. EU appliances tend have a fuse in the appliance. Rings are *very* handy. Understand them and what they offer.

Great idea. Wagos are brilliant, some pushfit/spring connectors (chinesium) are rubbish. If manufacturers implement wago style 221 connectors, they need to be as good or better quality as wago. As soon as you get a failure, people will go back to screw terminals. I like the idea. Also consumer units with mcbs that can use wago style would be good, as others say. An inline wago FCU Would be cool too.

Screwless connections are quite common in industrial / control - DIN rail terminals, Rexroth Indralogic PLCs have them, Ansell Optilux high bay lights have them and I've seen 110v trailing sockets with them. One interesting one is Omron MX2 motor inverters; control signal terminals are screwless, but the power input terminals and motor output terminals still have screws. I reckon for switches and sockets, part of the battle will be getting them slim enough to fit in a shallow back box (might not be an issue on a new install where you have control over sourcing materials, but could be on a repair to an existing installation).

It is difficult to find a socket with screw terminals in stores in Germany. The push terminals on German sockets are designed up to 16A, the contacts in the socket often only up to 10A. But there are also good sockets for real 16A. For more amps, we can use CEE sockets.
@alexanderkupke920
@alexanderkupke920 3 жыл бұрын
You will also rarely find someone trying to squish 4 mm leads into a socket. Common here are 2.5 or sometimes even 1.5 mm (if the line has not to provide 16 A continuously, but then those are designed for temporary short time use with 16 A only anyways, for anything else you should use the blue CEE Sockets) and they are not on a ring. But thinking of items and appliances you may find in regular households, nothing actually comes to my mind that exceeds 10 A. The devices with the biggest power consumption are mostly rated something like 2200 W and just scratch the 10 A. You can order sockets from Mertens in both variants by the way. Only disadvantage I personally find with those screw less terminals, the release levers usually don't work that well.

Great content, subscribed! Informative, well paced, with funny banter. Having lived in Belgium where they use the same Shukho sockets, got to say the plugs are a lot easier to get in and out compared to the UK 3pin and the fit is very snug. I had to change all our services over to Shukho plugs, then 3 years later change them all back again to UK plugs which was fiddly. Many small amperage devices in the UK only use two core with the plugs so the 3rd pin is redundant electrically anyway. The internal moving shield is clunky and often is stiff even for adult hands and I've had to give plenty of plugs going into an extension lead a smack because of the lack of precision with components. No such problems with the Shukho. If the consumer units are properly earthed and individual RCD on every circuit, is there really a need for individually earthed devices and sockets? Going two core throughout the house would save money on cable and space allowing slimmer socket and plug internals, wouldn't it? And the big 16A outdoor connectors in the UK are all Shukho style already, rather than monster UK 3 pin, so when will we switch over to the European electrical standards - or at least allow them in the regs so householders and businesses can use them if they want to?

There are a few good reasons to move towards having a cage clamp connection points. Other then speed and correct force used for connecting wires there are a few points to consider. New builds often use the shallow metal box. This means the cable when connected with screw terminals often comes out perpendicular and cables immediately bend to fit into the shallow box. As we have more and move advanced sockets and smart sockets you cannot use a shallow back box. But the solution for sockets with WiFi repeater or smart sockets is a 10mm spacer. Not an ideal look. Using cage clamp spring contacts the cable it not bent immediately so as to have some strain relief value. Lots of benefits. As you say. Who will be first to market and save time at installation while improving quality. Screws force and screw slot heads the first to be at fault and fiddly as you show.

Here in Germany that's the standard for several decades. It started with light switches first, then the outlets were fitted with such terminals. And now you got boards, MCBs, RCDs, RCBOs with such terminals (Hager Quick Connect). Now these days only cheap outlets or switches have the screw terminals. With one exception, special devices like a wall mounted pull switch, or old stuff which is still in production like the old black bakelite switches like this one: www.heinze.de/imagedownload/?image=/m2/20/59220/images/73/13515673px1250x1250.jpg For people which like the 1950s industrial style in their home... And there's no need to push the button when inserting the wire, only when you remove them. The switches, in that case a two-way switch but as you can clearly see, the housing is also used for other models like the intermediate. But in that case there are three terminals, behind the other holes is no terminal: www.voltking.de/media/image/product/59987/md/busch-jaeger-2000-6-us-wippschalter-einsatz-aus-und-wechselschaltung-thermoplast-blau-2cka001012a1069~5.png

I'm in the US and my brother's house developed several faults with outlets wired with 12/3 cable and push in connectors. That arrangement used 6 of the push in connectors per outlet and the stiffness of that many wires made it difficult to push the outlets into the boxes (which are narrow and deep in the US). I use Wago connectors now and they work great as you can push each separate connector into the box without much wire stress. As a time saver I'd prefer outlets come with attached wire leads that you can use with standard Wago-type connectors.

Comment from America. 23 year IBEW member. For me, time is not the factor when choosing a device. It’s quality. Wago connectors have a huge fail rate. At least the ones we have here. I don’t trust the current to pass through a connection as thin as a knife blade. I like a good mechanical connection, but most of my conductors are stranded, in conduit.
@MervynPartin

Well said sir. All the guys were talking about was time and not quality. To me, it is quality that matters most. I have seen too many rushed installations which were dangerous. It is true that some German equipment is of very high quality, but this is not universally true and some of their products are rubbish so the tendency to say something from there must be good shows a lack of common sense. As a matter of interest, the UK used to use stranded cables for house wiring, but the 7/0.029" was superseded by 2.5 sq mm conductors, with the cables either clipped or in a conduit.

To add to the concept, how nice would it be to terminate on a Wago connector that then plugs into the accessory. You could then complete and test off first fix and then after plastering and decorating simply plug in the accessory and screw back the face place. The idea is that the Wago connector has its own plug and socket. you could go further by color coding and keying the Wago connectors so they only connect to the correct terminals of the accessory. With this kind of arrangement, Wago could produce a two-part connector that would retrofit any accessory

We have had back stab-in connectors in the USA for many years. When done well using quality components they work well. However the NEC still recommend conductors around screws tighten to specific tor JW settings. The back Stan-in connectors had the problem of coming loose and poor termination technique causing arcing. The wago connectors look much better and heavily engineered but again here electricians should be checking. Manufacturers should be releasing their lab test results on their products to see how well they perform. I have to say wago ask provide a lot of technical information on their devices. As a listed device I would trust them however the worry is not to ago products but the cheaper knock-offs we have to worry about.

Unfortunately most people share concerned about the price. Features like this can be built into sockets but the cost to re-tool and re-certify the product will push this above a price point people will pay. You will also suffer housing developers etc (who generate the volume for manufacturing) won’t go for this as they are also focused on price. For the state of the market it’s probably a point of over engineering which would lead the manufacturing aspect of it down a path of conceding this development in favour of a simpler alternative like it currently has

As an electrician that does lots of service work, much of what I fix is from wago and other spring type connectors that fail. Eventually the springs go weak from heat, the copper gets oxidized and they fail to make a good connection. At the very least they fail, in extreme circumstances they catch fire or melt the devices. It's easy service work that ends up costing the customer lots of money. The smart ones will pay to fix all the devices and connections at one time. Thoes not so smart will end up replacing them over time one at a time with a service call each time.

@@efixx properly hooked ends on receptacles, pigtails striped, twisted and nutted up tight. This is all pretty well standard stuff for commercial work and the trademark of a skilled electrician. The only time I ever see the wago stuff is in fluorescent or led lighting, but that kind of comes with needing to have a means of disconnect in the fixture. For lighting stuffs they are needed, but that's low current loads and they work well in that application. I guess sometime it's used in some control circuit stuff, but again generally frowned upon. Any kind of real amperage goes through that crap for long and they just heat up and melt. I have to fix lots of thoes spring clip terminations, mostly you only see that crap in residential stuff any way, but it pays good to fix it because hunting the bad spring clips is an art form.

That indicates the cable is too small for the amperage load if there is *heat.* I have seen Wagos that have been on high current circuits for over 10 years and are still perfect - but the cable never heated up because it was designed properly with the Wago correctly sized. I cannot speak for other makers. I am not doubting you, but it appears there is more depth to it.
