I think it's just one of those things like you're so excited to finally get something you've always wanted, then you get it and it's not near as exciting as you thought it would be, most likely because you hyped yourself up so much and set your expectations too high. Our brains have a funny way of playing tricks on us. I get that it was a rhetorical question. I posted it anyway mostly for others why might find it useful.

I only dig in my heals when I think things are going too far. Here is another suggestion from my 20 years plus of mixing and producing. AVOID giving clients "rough" mixes if you can. Then you are setting up a "demo love" situation. Once someone hears a rough mix hundreds of times (and you know they will) they are instantly biased.
@flipsspillow

That depends on the genre and artists you work with too. Just in my limited experience I’ve found a system that works. I have a few clients who book multiple sessions for the same song, because they want to hear the rough so they can fix things in their performances and change things about what they do. We’ve spoken about these things ahead of time and we know the workflow we work best with together. I deliver a rough shortly after the session. We have a session scheduled for a week after to fix/change anything. Then we go from there.

Interesting point about listening to a WIP/rough Mix, OP: In the 20+ years I’ve been making noise, I have learned that listening to a WIP can definitely lean me towards being bias - for certain elements in a tune remaining at a certain volume, or sequencing staying a certain way/etc., after hearing it a million times - when it comes time to finish the tune/Mix/sequence into something absolutely final. Takes me forever to finish anything because of this old habit. Your comment struck quite a chord with me. 😉 Habe a good day.

I fell out with my longest clients because they wanted me to master too loud after I’d been going too loud for a few mixes.. I even offered them to take a mix to a mastering house but no.. they wanted cheap and loud. When I drew the line I had to then walk away. That was the day I learned to please myself first. Communication is always key. Nice interview. First music based clip I’ve watched in a year after a pretty major thyroid breakdown. 🙌🏻

It shows what you can offer to others, it shows how you can have fun with what you do in addition to earning money. The ultimate conclusion for me became, giving the client what they want but in my way. So that I don't feel disappeared or ineffective and clients feel satisfied at the same time. Because after some time, they come to you, mostly expecting what you do. (Of course I'm talking about the ideal world, but hey who said we cannot achieve it? :) )

If a client isnt satisfied with my first mix and master, I'll ask them for their input and make the changes. A lot of my favorite albums were mixed by him but he is kind of a one trick pony in the sense that most of his mixes have kind of the same sound. Same snare sample, same bass sounds. He's a hit maker, the guy you want mixing the first album your rock band will put out, but maybe not the second.
@erazmo
@erazmo 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe he is a one trick pony if we are talking about his mixing choices and workflow but I don't agree that his mixes sound the same. The most important difference comes already from the artists and their own sound and performance. Does his work on The Cult, RATM, Jeff Buckley, Faith No More and Nirvana sound the same to you? I hope you don't mean that. He's got a few, maybe even same conservative (but some of those actually very creative, like those you've mentioned) tools and tricks to take him there were he wants the sound to be. I would even dare to say that the most mixers do the same. The most important asset in mixing is ears and he's got golden ears. If you would give him to mix your first album, why wouldn't you give him the next one? Just for the sake of change? If it sounds good, it sounds good. And he achieves that on serial basis.

Thanks for this awesome video. Knowing that from time to time, even a legend like Andy Wallace gets such weird requests and can't please the clients with impossible requests show that there are limits to what artists can suggest. Obviously, with all his incredible experience, it is a lot easier for Mr. Wallace to know if something IS good or not for a mix than someone who starts doing mixing and/or mastering. At my level, which is light years away behind the level of Mr. Wallace, I can't tell if a request is possible or not so I'll always say "Yes absolutely! I can do it!" ( 😂 ) but that could bring me to taking days trying to make impossible things or do things the wrong way as it could be easier using a different approach. Experience is such an invaluable asset! Kindest Regards, have a great day and thanks to Mr. Wallace for taking of his very precious time, I know how much he must be busy on other stuff as well! 🎼🃏🎶🎵🙏😁🌠

I think Cobain loved the entire album when he first heard it. Everything I’ve read about Nirvana has said they were all really pumped about the album when they finished it. No one can be everything to everybody. Sometimes people just don’t hear things the same way. He does mention that he tries to make things work, but if they’re really not connecting, he’s not the person for the job. But if you want him to mix your album just because of his name, that’s silly too because only a few of us nerdy types even care who mixed what album. He’s certainly mixed some great albums in his time, so no doubting his expertise, but many other people have made great mixes too and they all have their place. I’m certainly not in the tier with Andy Wallace, but the longer I do this, I’m realizing that I need to halt my initial reaction and consider a suggestion. One of two things will happen- we try it and it doesn’t work as agreed by everyone, or we try it and I learn a new viewpoint, new technique, new approach, etc. that will help me down the road.

As big a fan as I am of Albini and almost every band he's recorded, he's failed on Slint's "Tweez" and Fugazi's "In on the killtaker", which they re-recorded w/ their previous producer and scrapped Albini's sessions. What's important is that he's had more incredible mixes than not. Again, nobody's perfect.

I'll never understand why clients insist on sabotaging all their hard work in the eleventh hour. I've had mixes which were clearly superior in every way rejected because they didn't match the crappy quality of the other songs on the album or they didn't sound as low fidelity as what they had done in their bedrooms. I've been forced to take the Bass down so low that it was practically non-existent because the client was near-deaf and couldn't hear any highs. I've had clients force me to do mixes with the Vocals too far out front because they insisted that their audience be focused on the lyric content. It got go a point where I even briefly retired.

Hi, doesn't that depend on which level you are performing? As a beginner, and earn about 20$ per mix, I wouldn't yet complain about their complaints? Because the best add, is pretty much the rumors from producers or artists? Or am I wrong?

Not necessarily it only depends honstly about the relationship between artist and engineer

It’s not about level so much. Even when inexperienced, the engineer needs to be the one who knows how to hold a mix together in spite of the artist. Andy says it the best I’ve ever heard starting at about 2:31. The most important skill you’ll ever learn is right there.

It’s super important. When your mix is built correctly, as he says you have freedom to make changes without it being disruptive. On the other hand, if your mix isn’t established and someone says, “ turn the electric bass up “ well, you just fucked up the piano and now the kick drum has disappeared.

I find the closer the mix is to finished the more the band becomes experts in mixing and sonics. Singers are the absolute worst in my experience. In the end I just give up and make their changes, when it gets to that point mentally I've moved on to the next project.

Just do not understand this whole concept of sending a mix out to somebody to mix for you as opposed to being in the studio with an engineer the whole concept is foreign and weird when did this start where did this come from who the heck would do such a thing what kind of music producers do this.
@cary3428

It’s like this. I started making my living as a record/ mix engineer in 1986. Do I miss having the entire band spouting “ mix” suggestions ( mostly “ turn me up “ ) in the control room? Not one fucking bit. But the other side of the story today is the bulk of my mixing is remote and it can be a total nightmare when the client is asking for revisions based on there often terrible listening situation. From my experiences the best product comes from the artist sharing a clear sonic vision with me and one or two reference tracks that actually make sense. You have to know and trust your mix engineers ears. Often the artist has zero understanding of what a “ Mix “ actually is or how one achieves it. But having said all that, my favorite mix situation is with the decision making client sitting beside me and working together to hit the target. As long as they have a clue about how audio mixing works.
