Two bars in and he’s like “oh my goodness what IS THIS?!?” Then there’s his smile at the “butter drippin off a hot biscuit” line! 😂 LOVE IT btw - isn’t that Tom Waits for parts of the narration??? Also - for some context CATCH ANY VIDS of the 1980s lineup of King Crimson, which is the only band that I’ve heard Les not only mention in interview but also cover, “Thela Hun Ginjeet” and rip off (Jerry Was a Racecar Driver IS Krims “Elephant Talk”!!!) ✌️🤘🎹🤓

As a starting bass player this guy blew my little brain. Living thru the 80's with cockrock to this and tool, blind melon, soundgarden, living colour, fishbone, janes addiction, then all the metal, and hip hop it was the best.

Since you've newly become a Tool fan, then it might be interesting to note that Tim Alexander (the primary drummer in Primus, that you seen in this video) has played in both Puscifer and A Perfect Circle with Maynard. And Danny Carey filled in for Tim Alexander with Primus in 2014 when Alexander suffered a heart attack. Definitely recommend checking out more Primus! Southbound Pachyderm for instance.

My daughter was a teenager when this music was released and I loved it and she couldn't get over that her dad loved listening to Primus! Parents should sit down with their kids and ask them to play their favorite music so you can enjoy it with them. I also sat down with her and we listened to my favorite music from the 60's and 70's. It was a learning experience for both of us..when Kurt Cobain died my daughter was so upset she sat me down and I listened to Nirvana with her and understood why she was upset, she appreciated that.

When I was a teenager and Sonic Youth released their album "Goo" was was listening to it one afternoon when my dad came home. He asked what I was listening to and I told him. He then asked what I liked about them. I said how they were using feedback loops, improvisation, and even playing with a screwdriver on their strings. His response was "And you don't like the Kronos Quartet?" Which is kind of an avante guard string quartet. In the years following I really learned to love Kronos, and still love Sonic Youth. It probably wasn't until I was 48 and my father sadly passed that I realized that Sonic Youth and Kronos Quartet probably knew a lot about each other.

So glad you enjoyed this track and were honest about your previous 'ignorance' to other genre's (we are all guilty of this), the singer Les Claypool is also the funky bass player (and barman in the video) but the gravel voice of Tommy the Cat is the legendary Tom Waits. Not the easiest artist to get into but a very unique voice, check out waltzing matilda by Tom Waits, its amazing. Thanks for entertaining me tonight reviewing one of my favorite songs from way back.

Primus is one of those bands, that you Love them, or can't stand them... there is no in between... and I love them. The unique style, and Les Claypool on the Bass is just amazing. He might sound familiar as he also is the person who did the famous Theme Song for South Park. Dive deeper into the Primus hole and I think you will enjoy it. Some of the greats are "Jerry was a race car driver", "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver"

They were the most unique thing going on, next to the likes of Mr.Bungle and The Victims Family. Allot of good stuff happening back then. Blessed to have been there!

You hit the nail on the head. Les Claypool is definitely one-of-a-kind. Also they come across as really weird but they are one of the funniest bands to come along. Also Claypool comes from a long line of seamen and longshoreman so a lot of his songs - Tommy being a good example - takes a lot of his songwriting inspiration and metric flow from that culture. He tends to write his songs almost as if they were modern shanties or folktales instead of writing it from a person's POV.

First time that I saw these guys was the Gathering of the Tribes tour. King’s X, Steve Earle, X, maybe Fishbone and Primus. The girl that I took brought along a couple of tabs of xtc, and I was blazing my brains out when they came on. This is mid 91, and I hadn’t heard of them yet. I was way too high to comprehend what was going on, but I remember that every musician on that tour was standing on stage watching these guys. After I got home, I immediately picked up Frizzle Fry to try to make sense of what I just saw and have been a fan ever since. Must have seen them 5-6 times since that first show.

First time I ever heard Primus was when I saw them live in Houston playing on the roof of a club in 1990. They were mostly playing songs from their first album, "Frizzle Fry", but they also played some songs from their upcoming album, "Sailing the Seas of Cheese", and this was one of them. I play guitar, bass, and drums myself, and I was mesmerized by Les Claypool's style on bass. All I could do was just stare intensely at his fingers on the fretboard the entire time. I've been a fan of Primus ever since. Les Claypool is absolutely one of the best bassists on Earth.

One thing that you would probably be surprised by is that as prog/funk/crazy this band sounds in a studio, they absolutely get *heavy* when you hear them live. I haven't seen them too much in the last ten years, but I grew up in the Bay Area and saw them a lot in the 90's. Their New Year's Eve shows were legendary, and they would absolutely thump. I saw them play with Tool, Mr Bungle, and a few other fun bands over the years and the shows were always insane. Another cool thing about them is hearing them play covers. I heard them play Ministry's Thieves (this song): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/asljdaaI3Zu2oJs.html live and it was crazy, but they've covered a ton of different bands over the years. The covers they've done across genres are amazing.

Primus (pronounced like prime-us) are in the first Bill and Ted movie (Excellent Adventure) playing this same song in the "audition sequence" for the "battle of the bands" that Bill & Ted supposedly won lol. The bassist Les Claypool also does the theme song for South Park. He is amazing to see live.
