Please do, in Australia, we only have mid-size utes and all manufacturers have upped tow ratings to 3500kg and all travel trailer ( caravan ) makers are building to that limit. It is becoming crazy here with everyone on the limit. Rams are sold here but conversion cost and taxes make the two expensive for most.

Big Truck Big RV another great video. I am a long time truck owner and Excursion owner and fan. I got the itch for a new Super Duty , watched your video , SD 250 6.2 gas v8 and bought almost the same vehicle! At first I was hot for a diesel but saw the high difference in price and changed my mind. I wonder if they use some type of formula to equip the trucks that are on the lot. Sometimes they appear capricious. I found a new 2016 XLT 250 diesel on the lot during my search. It had many options, long bed, really nice, with manual windows! Power mirrors, manual windows! That killed the deal. I checked yesterday and they still have it! Crazy combo! Just wanted to say thanks for the help, you have a great channel!!!

Since some of us can't afford to spend the money for a new truck, how about compiling a list of red flags to look for on 2-5 year old trucks? Something to rule out trucks before spending money to have a mechanic check it over. Maybe a checklist that if the truck passes those items then it's worth spending the money to have a mechanic check it over. And thanks for all the info you have given out. You do a great job of being make impartial or stating when your brand bias is showing.

Great vid. Having owned several different trucks and towable over the last 40 years there is one item I’m sure that you’re aware of that I believe makes just as big of difference on safe towing as a dually. That is wheelbase! A crew cab long bed one ton with a wheelbase in the 175” range single or dually is much more stable when towing. The younger crowd I’ve talked to don’t like the long beds so much because in their words the short bed looks “trick” and the long bed looks like an old person truck. Everything I’ve ever read over the years says the longer the wheelbase the better the handling when towing. Thanks for a really interesting channel.

Todays SRW trucks tow very well in my opinion. I have a '14 Ram 3500 SRW with the Aisin and tow a 36' 3 axle 5th wheel Toy hauler that , when fully loaded, weighs about 17,000#. I have never felt any stability issues even when towing in the mountains of Colorado or in the open windy roads in Utah. My SRW has a payload of about 4000# and easily handles the pin weight of my 5th wheel. Duallys may offer more capability, but many people can safely choose a SRW. The most imortant thing is to know the real weights of your load and do your homework when selecting a truck.

I agree. I have a 2017 Ram 3500 SRW Limited with Aisin and Mega Cab with Ram Boxes. I tow a 39' two axle 15K pound 5th wheel with no problems. I have the auto leveling which is great. Using the Reese Sidewinder pin box which enables me to tow with the Ram Boxes. Everyone kept telling me no way, but it tows perfectly and safely. Just do your research first, and find a way to get what you want.

I would like to point out the safety margin benefit of a dually when it comes to tire failures, punctures, blowouts, whatever... on the rear, towing weight loaded, axle. In my personal experience, rear tire issue + dually = no drama, rear tire issue + conventional = lots O drama...

I love my 96 F350 dually. Use it to pull our 35' toy hauler with. Loaded the trailer is around 15k. And my truck is cherry. Only use it for pulling and taking the wife on a date. I drive the old 94 gmc k2500 reg cab to work and around town. It's easier to park and don't have to worry about getting a scratch on it. I get to go big at work every day with an '05 Pete with a twin turbo 550 Cat and an18spd with 2trailers Gross of 118,000lbs. Ain't life great. Keep it shiny side up folks. 👍

Great information, I have 2016 Ram 3500 Dually 4x4 that is rated at 30,180 pound tow capacity. My 5th wheel GVWR is 15,500. My 2011 2500 would have probably towed it, but not legally, and I wanted a large gap between truck capability and my load requirements.

I have a buddy who only tows large RVs for dealers. He only uses Dodge SRW trucks and has never had an accident. That being said,, he is a professional driver. Newer coach owners should take safety and stability into consideration with SRW and DRW difference because there are a few big ones. All that being said if your rig is a safe weight for a SRW truck then I wouldn't even consider a DRW truck. That would be a great waist of money!

Bravo Bravo Bravo for putting that last lil bit out there for people. My Dad always told my brother and I that if a 1/2 ton did ok but you towed or hauled loads several times a year that stretched its limits then go bigger and same with the 3/4 ton trucks so after having my last 3/4 ton that hauled hay ok but pulling hay and a 75 ho tractor at same time seemed like it was stressing it I opted for the 1 ton dually heavy duty 4x4 and bought a bigger trailer too

I am new to the whole travel trailer thing. I'm towing my 10,500 pound GVW travel trailer with my F250. It tows just fine but I really fight squat even with my Blue Ox. I never considered my trailer as a large travel trailer until now. I may have to consider a larger tow vehicle. My hesitation has always been having TOO BIG of a vehicle because it is my daily driver when not towing

We have a 10,000 lb. GVWR travel trailer. We went with the 2018 single rear wheel short bed F350 diesel because it is easier to to off-road in and easier to park in somewhat restrictive spaces such as scenic overlooks (when exploring without the trailer). We still have plenty of reserve towing capacity. We're not close to pushing this truck to its limits. We may not even fully load the trailer to its 10,000 lb. limit. Your observation about the dually towing better is true. We weighed the pros and cons and came up with a SRW when looking at everything we wanted this truck to do. Everything is a tradeoff as you have pointed out. There is no perfect truck. Just the best truck for a given set of circumstances.

Imo, people generally want just enough truck to do what they want, or overload them. I'm guilty of that myself. The things I hauled with a ford ranger when I was young was crazy. What people SHOULD keep in mind is do I have enough truck for the o s### moments. Getting cut off, blow tire, steeper hill than thought. Those are the times you will get in trouble with the wrong truck. I always recommend you get more truck than you think you need. On a side note, I remember you talking about why you went back to 450, mainly turning radius. I fully understand the difference since I have owned both, and due to registration issues in Ohio I now have 350 tow boss. Have you ever thought about doing a comparison video on this with ford, Chevy and Dodge? Since for some odd reason ford doesn't offer wide track on the latest 350, I am curious how the others compare. Thanks for all you do to help inform us.

I bought a 2020 Ram 3500 drw Aisin/HO 6.7 4x4 I lifted with Carli & Fox suspension added airbags and 22.5” Alcoa 10lug wheels with Toyo 16ply tires. Big Rig stuff. Was going for a 43’ riverstone Or momentum toy hauler. Decided on a 30’ bunk airstream flying cloud. Came to the decision based on my own levels of stress towing a huge trailer vs. an Airstream. Along with the ease of setup upon arrival and a less is more approach. Very personal choice but I began to regret my truck choice. But I realize before and after this video that the braking and stability of towing is more important than just being able to get a trailer up a hill while the 1/2ton would be a fine rig it wouldn’t give me what the 3500 does. Glad to hear a fellow dually man that never regretted his decision once he hooked up. That’s when they shine.

My SRW ‘17 Ram 3500 Tradesman with Cummins/Aisin 4x4 crew cab long bed has a GVWR of 12,300 and a payload of 4330 lbs. I’m a little above your estimate. My travel trailer is only 9k but I need to be able to throw my HD Ultra Limited in the bed so I needed the long bed. Tow capacity is actually slightly lower (400ish pounds) with the Aisin transmission in my trim level. I’m guessing it’s the extra weight.

I tow a 10k lb 33' TT with a 2017 F250 6.7. Last year we took it on a 6k mile round trip journey through MT, WA, OR, ID, WY, ND, etc. Through the mountains, Yellowstone, Mt Rainer, the works. On the trip home we drove through high winds in a storm rolling through the upper midwest. 40mph sustained cross winds and higher gusts in NE. I had no issues whatsoever with a proper hitch set up and some common sense. If you can invest in a truck and trailer, you can afford a $500 hitch.

J.D. great advice sir. It’s similar to the advice and information I was given when I was in the market for a truck and Rv by a close friend. I recently purchased a Ram Laramie 3500 and conventional toy hauler with a GVWR of 7,500 lbs. Also given the fact that I’ll be towing 2 H-D motorcycles I did not want to take any chances. Not only does this give me lots of wiggle room in term of power, braking and payload but it also give my wife and I room to upgrade if we decide in the future to move up to either a larger conventional tow toy hauler or 5th wheel toy hauler. ✌🏽

So tired of all of these idiots knocking the 68RFE Transmission, I was on 4 forum's last night with guys that have towed heavy with the 68RFE and a ton of miles on them. The consensus was the knuckle heads knocking the 68RFE were highly modified truck's doing burnouts and racing them, not using their trucks for the intended purpose. Cummins owns a lot of RAM Trucks for testing purposes, they test with them 5 days a week every week, if there was a real problem with the 68RFE Cummins would make RAM aware of it. The problems that do arise with the 68RFE are do to modified tuning, something it was never designed for. All 3 Transmissions in the RAM HD Trucks are well suited for towing and hauling significant weights. You never hear from the 10's of thousands of RAM owners who never have a problem with their Transmission.

I totally agree with a dually being the best toe platform to use but for a lot of people that tow RVs it's only about 10% of the time that you're hooked up Towing and 90% of the time that you're using the truck for General use so it's more practical to have the smaller platform for General use IMO . Thanks for the video.

Joe Allen payload, pin weight capacity, and stability are the only real gains. But it cost more on tires, rides stiffer, often loses 1 or 2 mpg over srw, almost always lwb wide trucks, and sometimes have issues with axle float on wet or muddy terrain when unloaded.

2018 GMC Sierra 3500 SWD, 4x4 Standard bed has a payload of 3,500 lbs. No sag or drive issues with my 16,000 GVWR 5th wheel toy hauler. Always check the numbers. Truck GVWR, GCVWR, and payload. Also the trailer GVWR and pin/hitch weight. With those numbers, you can determine if your truck and trailer are a good match, or even if they are legal to be on the road together. (Axle limits apply as well) Of course, check with your state for license requirements. CA, for example, residents must have a Non-Commerical Class A for the 5th wheel over 15,000 lbs.

I just got a f350 dually because I found one for the same price as a single rear wheel. Not just for the half dozen times a year I can make one trip instead of two with the increase payload, but we are looking at a 10,600 pound TT and yes the single rear wheeled trucks can handle it but a dually will do even better. And since it’s the same price why not. Maybe now I’ll even get a larger horse trailer.

If you go camping where its sandy the srw are better. We tow 200 miles on highway and air down to about 20psi to get into our camping spots. I don't know if a drw would do very good in soft sand. Never seen one where we camp.

I just saw a perfect example of what not to do when getting an RV. In the Walmart parking lot near me there was a late 90’s to early 2000’s Ford Ranger loaded down with tools hooked up to probably a 15’ Prowler tandem axle camping trailer and the bed was loaded down with tools and a camper shell. This guy had to have close to 10,000 lbs between his tools and the trailer. Of course, he was sitting in the parking lot with all of his coolant laying on the pavement underneath his truck...

I will give him this, the truck was sitting level so he had to have upgraded his shocks and/or springs but still he didn’t upgrade his cooling system and he was way overweight.

I spent 40 minutes reading the comments on this video, the consensus i get regarding SRW vs DRW towing a good size fifth wheel is: The SRW RAM 3500 has a 4000lb+ payload capacity so it can handle the pin weight and has ample towing capacity, what the DWR offers is substantial stability and braking advantages.
@HRCFan

Really wanted the new Ford F350 dually. Wife was dead set against it, and after we drove the dually she was even more against it. Even though I would be driving it on a daily basis much more than she, we ended up getting the F350 SRW long bed. Really like it, just doesn't have the upper capabilities the DRW has.

I thinking the braking ability of the duality should also be considered as a reason. Has for why the upgrade to the F450 simple turning radius and bigger brakes. I tell you the turning radius is equally important if not more important than the additional payload.

I have listed to you for a while now not I am used to pulling my 28 ft 8000 lb empty with a 1989 GMC single wheeled 1 ton with it loaded and my wife me and our daughter plus everything we had in the bed of the truck 12 bricks, Generator and a few other things. Yes we rolled kinda heavy but the 1 ton had a 454 with 4 sp auto trans and that 1 ton mad many trips from the mountains of Colorado to the mountains of the Carolinas and the only main thing that happened to the truck was one heater hose that would blow every oh I'd say 6 or 7 thousand miles don't know why never could figure that one out but to chalk it up to just a manufacturing defect lol. Well have a great day may Jesus give you and your family many blessings and keep y'all safe in your travels. Peace out

I would move the bumper pull weight limit even lower especially if it's a tongue heavy one. My previous toy hauler is (and saying is because a friend bought it and it's still stored in my back yard) a 21ft bumper pull; with the generator sitting on the tongue. Despite being a 5000 lb empty trailer, it actually pushes down on the dually (only truck that's towed both) more than my 39ft toy hauler - which is at 11k empty. I'm sure the 5th wheel has more kingpin weight, but the leverage caused by the long tongue and that leverage being applied almost 1 ft behind the back bumper (vs right above the rear axle), makes a world of difference. The newer bumper pulls with the small 3ft tongue may be better in the tongue weight department, but I would still put the mark at about 8k lbs+ for a dually. The offending 21footer has been towed by an F350 srw with a v10, 4.30s, 4x4; an f150 2.7 reg cab 4x4, and is now primarily towed by a 4x4 tahoe. it pushes down on the f150 and tahoe pretty bad... and I have videos with the difference in the V10 vs the F350 dually diesel pulling the same trailer. F350 srw knew the trailer was back there, but mostly from an aero standpoint... the dually diesel didn't give a damn. Only way you'd know is how much the trucks squatted. Plus, with a dually, you have an excuse for parking like an asshole. :P

It comes down to what do you feel comfortable driving. Do you drive your RV to one location for some time and use it as your Home base, then drive your truck around a lot visiting places, or do you mostly tow your RV to it's location then camp and walk around or stay put. Also where do you plan on towing? Also, do you have someone else that's driving besides you, and how comfortable to they feel driving a Dually around and when? Some women don't want to tow the RV, but are happy to drive around afterwards. But if they don't like driving a dually, maybe you needed to not get one.

You can upgrade the brakes in 5th and truck And still be lighter and stop quicker. Remember lbs =distance. Go for 350/3500 class. And stay in the non cdl class. Insurance will cost less as well.

Towing capacity, my 2017 3500 crew, long bed with Aisin actually has a lower towing capacity than an identical truck with a 68rfe. I’m sure it’s due to different weights in transmissions.

Nice video as always. I’m in the market to get a f450 dually with a CM aluminum skirted flatbed. But I’m still debating between chassis cab vs regular pickup. I know CC would give me more load, but not sure about towing since I’m towing mostly heavy trailer: 85-90% around 10-12k, 10-15% is 15-17k. Max I would haul is usually 2-3 pallets of 60lb-concrete bags maybe 1-3 times/year (54 each, totally maxed out at 9800lbs, short distance from local Home Depot). So I can’t make up my mind on this yet since I also want some nice high tech features (360 cameras, etc...).

I would really like to see you do a comparison towing review between an F350/Chevy 3500/Ram 3500 and one of those brands F450/4500 HD series. This could be done using a fifth wheel trailer of 15500 lbs GVWR or higher. Your reviews are excellent but I would like to see more within those parameters. Thanks!

I spoke with a car hauler that transports cars around the US professionally. He pulls huge heavy hitch pull car hauler enclosed trailers and drives hundred of thousands of miles each year. I asked him about dually pickups vs standard heavy duty, and he said he had no preference and it made no difference to him even though he was hauling huge payloads. He said they drove pretty much the same. I was suprized.

Labojoesky: True, you can get SRW trucks in that range, but the trucks most get have a much lower ACTUAL payload rating. Often the specs will say 4000lbs, but the door sticker, because of features like Diesel Engine and 20" wheels lower the max payload to well under 3000lbs. I should make a video on that topic.

I bought a 95 Ford 350 dully crew cab 8 ft. bed goose neck hitch to pull a Hallmark Cyclone toy hauler 41 ft triple axlem 18,000 gross weight. The Ford only had 107,000 original miles on it and is very clean. The engine is 5.8 / 351 gas engine, not sure of the trani. It does have a trani cooler. I know this truck is not a commercial grade hauler, but I only need it to haul my toy hauler (10 x 12 ) garage, to a few locations for vacation. The mfg of the Cyclone said the 350 is adequate, what say you?? Ideally I wanted the idi diesel but could not find one with low miles and reasonably priced.

It's almost a bit silly to recommend a dually for toy hauler based on GVRW alone. You can buy a 6k lb (curb) trailer with 10k gvrw, and it will only ever hit 7-8k fully loaded. Insane to buy a dually for that load

I did not see that you mentioned that the tires have to be different on the front than the back. I like to keep my truck clean but I do not have the physical capabilities of hand washing the truck 1-2 times a week. Automatic car washing is out with a DWD. Just a few things to consider.

I do know that dual has more stopping power than single. and I believe the weight test is only good for flat but going up the mountain that needs more power and less weight require. For example, F-450 is pulled 30,000 flat and what can it pull going uphill easy and going downhill using low gear. Will it dual will be better and stronger? (Rocky Mountain and east side of Bakersfield.).
