Alcohol worked great for anxiety and mental health at the very start for me. Problem is that quickly turned into a reliance ultimately making everything I thought it fixed much worse. Putting off self-improvement is never a great idea. At no point does alcohol contribute to self-improvement.

I could never really have one glass or serving of Alcohol - I didn't see the point of it. I wanted to get buzzed or drunk. I soon realized that no matter how many good habits I established and how disciplined and focused I was, drinking would eventually kill all of it. I started making excuses to not do anything that took any effort. It put me in what I can only describe as a lower state. It then took weeks and months to rebuild and get back to where I was before repeating the cycle again. A buzz for a few nights wasn't worth setting my progress back months. These videos helped me break the cycle. Thank you.

Yes!! I am in a couple of Facebook groups about alcohol, and I get so sick of people talking about trying to moderate. For Pete's sake, heavy drinkers need to be honest with themselves: we don't WANT to moderate. We don't want 1, 2, or 3 drinks. We SAY we want to moderate b/c we don't want to quit drinking. But once you finally surrender to the truth that the correct number of drinks is zero, you can start to work on that.

Great talk, Kev! I've started drinking at the age of 20 (around 16 years ago or so). During the last 5 or 6 years of this wild ride, I've tried moderating the alcohol and still allowed my health to get bad every day. The FOMO was ridiculous and my drinking was still out of control. During the second year of the pandemic (2021), I had to evaluate and I was left with two decisions: I'm either going into sobriety for the rest of my life or continue drinking for the rest of my life. July 10, 2021 was unexpected - one drink and a final decision was made that Saturday night: I'm going into sobriety for the rest of my life. I rather have that than screwing up my health with swallowing a car battery or gasoline. Moderation of alcohol is nothing more than a con in my eyes and it bogs my mind that for so many years, I've bought into that con. As of now, at the age of 36, I am 560 days sober and I'm not going back to where I was.

How do we normalize puking!?? As if its worth it!.... so get tuff and plan the next go around. That shows how toxic it is and how the tolerance builds. 2 beers as an 8 year old and I was completely trashed and poisoned. Now I can swill beer all day and function through it. I like how you relate everything back to personal responsibilities. Successes and failures. It has been a lifesaver for me. Most of the other recovery channels and podcasts i listen to talk a lot about "not being able to do this on your own" or "you need community". Well, If thats the case then im fucked. LOL I must be antisocial or something because apart from my immediate family I have no desire to associate with people, any people. Im not a miserable sack, or cave dweller. I just dont have any need or desire for social contact with people. Your "do it on your own" mentality is something I can relate to.

Same. I think the isolation caused by the pandemic just intensified my distaste for most people. I am in a couple of FB groups about quitting drinking, and quite frankly, so many of the people there drive me freakin' insane b/c they keep trying to moderate, or keep slipping up and calling them "data points." Everybody pats them on the back and says, aww, it's okay. Not that we should beat ourselves up or hate ourselves when we slip, but we need to really LEARN from these mistakes and be doubly determined not to drink in the future. The correct number of drinks of a poison is ZERO. Zero drinks.

I’m 205 days sober. I’m still struggling with the lack of euphoria. I’m chasing the same high sober and sometimes I manage to reach it (during writing or running or when I see a beautiful sky) but I still miss this kind of instant form of high, the feeling of a modified mind state, the elevation. I try to tell myself that I romanticize it as I did always with cigarettes. I miss those, too. But I appreciate my sober life as well. I will try meditation and keep on living healthy, pushing myself to become a better version of myself. But I wonder: how others reach euphoria or this “high” sober?

I'm currently 2 years sober and have no desire to ever drink again due to how much my life has improved. But I really struggle at times with the regret. I'm 41, and lately all I can think about is how much more I could have done with my life if I didn't waste so much time drinking. The anxiety keeps me up at night. I'm on a good path, and i look forward to what the future will bring, but was there a time for you where you were able to let go of the regret? Thanks

Hey Kevin thanks for the mention. I understand the situation fully. I was involved in a conversation that day in regards to cannibis being utilized as a tool for personal insight. The oppositions claim was that no substance is needed for personal insight. It had me wondering how a shamanic tribe in the Peruvian rainforest would react if I told them that they did not need the Ayahuasca they have been consuming for 1000 years. If alcohol was never a global issue and rarely consumed.. would and could it hold a place in psychotherapy? I don't want to justify alcohol consumption. Only a thought experiment🖖🏻
