As a fluent Vietnamese speaker and reader, this is very common while in Vietnam because north and south Vietnamese people have different pronunciations. Sometimes even though we are speaking the same language we get it mixed up or confused with something else.

I agree theres even different words for each region with the same meaning like răng instead of sao or mô instead of đâu
@Nobody-ob5od2 жыл бұрын
@@Jackson-mr6kx true, also due to the North winning the Vietnam war, there are barely that much South Vietnamese people in Vietnam. But actually there are a lot in the US because the people of the South boarded American carriers that we’re going back to the home, due to the fear of the North killing any South or any person that came from American descent. Because us North aren’t that cruel, no killing like that ever happened on a mass scale.

@harshmnr2 жыл бұрын
What I usually do is ask in English if I can practice (and remind them that I'm just learning). That kind up gets rid of some tension. And most people are totally okay if you make a mistake; they will just be happy that someone is trying to learn their native language. I know in your case it was just one word but in general if you ever learn more and want to practice. :) ~:~

Don’t worry, we can seem really cold and standoffish when people speak English to us because we most likely have no idea what the heck you said or we’re just really nervous/shy. Not sure if knowing Vietnamese made this funnier, but I was ROFLing by the "tai sao". The music at the end was the cherry on top.

@@cookieguy3360 ah when I was growing up and probably until I'm married older vietnamese people used to ask me how old or what grade I was in. Or where I go to school etc. But all I really knew how to say was yes

One thing I love about Nathan's channel is his expressions. Makes everything 10x funnier, along with the Vietnamese jokes (as a Vietnamese, I can't tell you how many times I've been called Chinese).

As a native English speaker that taught myself other languages, this happens to me a lot. I'm constantly translating for my wife, when she informs me they've understood her request, even though she doesn't speak the local language and they don't speak English. It's bizarre how this works.

This kind of happened to me and my friends at a restaurant before. The waiter came and said a different language none of me or my friends spoke. My friend pulled out his phone and opened the language detector thing. My friend than said "Please say something to this phone" than the waiter said "I speak english." It was such a awkward moment, I was trying to hold my laugh in.

I'm really touched about how relatable this is as an African I can't speak my local language that much but I do understand it The only language I can speak fluently is English. I can even switch between the American, British and African accent when speaking English

Laughing my head off, this is hilarious and so so relatable. I remember one time my grandparents tried to get me to talk to my relatives in mandarin and all I could say was “nihao” and then my own name, like I was saying hi to myself, it was super embarrassing.
