"White" isn't a monoculture. You can be white and have a mixed cultural/ethnic background. A white Brit, a white French person, a white German, and a white Russian (for example) might *look* the same to a person of color, but there are still vast cultural differences between them.

I think "white culture" more relates to the west world or in the US (However we experience the same thing in Australia). I have to completely disagree on your point about white people lacking in diversity. Europe is made up of many different countries with very different languages, cultures, histories, etc. and many white Americans (myself included) have more than one of these heritages. There shouldn't be anything wrong with discussing and celebrating that. Many of the varied white peoples also suffered under discrimination, oppression and stereotypes either in their homelands or after arriving in America or both because of who they were.

It is insane how people born in America are actually ignorant on the facts that nationality-based discrimination and racism occurs even outside the US. Actual victims of the nazi regime were many slav nationalities, which in The US are all considered “privileged” and white. Try finding a job in the Netherlands as a Bulgarian. Or in France as any non-french national. They need to be desperate in order to take you, and even if they did, you would be looked at as if you are a criminal or a low life.
@WaltCronkite
@WaltCronkite Жыл бұрын
"White" and "Black" in America aren't terms referring to "All People Who Have White Skin" and "All People Who Have Black Skin". It's explicitly referring to people who are "culturally white" and "culturally black" in modern America. (i.e. Multi-generation nationals who have assimilated to either of the two American cultures) It's an incredibly important distinction that I think a lot of folks miss, just because it's not explicitly brought up in a lot of videos like these. And for real, you're shifting a conversation about modern racism into a conversation about historical racism. Those are both interesting conversations, and absolutely I agree they should both be had. But if one of those conversations is being used as a tool to move the spotlight away from the modern racism, is that because it's genuinely relevant, or is it because looking at the past doesn't require us to genuinely reflect on the reality of today?

It's not just about the act of wearing braids. Traditionally Black hairstyles, clothing styles, accessories and patterns of speech are often deemed too "urban", unprofessional, and inappropriate when Black people wear or do them. Black people are often made to feel bad or inferior for their cultural identities. Black kids are being suspended from school for having locs or afros. So many white hairstylists do not even take the time to learn about how to care for Black hair as if textured hair is a whole other species. But somehow, white folks can rock the cornrows, darken their skin, wear the grills, fill their lips and booties, and use AAVE speech patterns and they get compliments and recognition for their edgy, exotic style. Adopting Black physical characteristics without acknowledging the cultural and traditional history and meaning is inappropriate. If those same white folks were openly recognizing the influence behind the styles, publicly advocating for Black causes, calling for changes in school and work policies that discriminate against Black hair, etc, then sure, wear the braids. But if the plan is to accept the positive feedback without acknowledging the culture behind the style, then that's racist. Racism isn't just KKK hatred. It's also capitalizing or benefiting from the characteristics of an oppressed people group.

A person who is white can have varied *ethnic* backgrounds, but their race is still white. If you’re talking about having mixed racial backgrounds then at that point the person would be mixed and, presumably in this context, white-passing. If all the ethnicities in your background are racially white though, you’re still white. Obviously things get more nuanced when you have people who say they have 1/16 of some ethnicity whose people are generally considered to be non-white, because how much should that small of an influence factor in, but for more straightforward cases people often have a varied ethnic background within the same race.

Asian culture refers to Southeast Asian culture. Just as "Asian" refers to Southeast Asians and not anyone from the continent of Asia. Asian as a race is not the same as Asia the continent. They are different but have many similarities, just like Latin American culture or European culture. I don't agree with any of this BS but to say Asian culture doesn't exist is just ignorant. It is so strange how a hairstyle that was used by many different ancient cultures around the world (Vikings; certain Slavic tribes, tribes of the Steppe, Celtic tribes, Southeast Asian tribes, Maori, African tribes and the Picts) is now considered belonging to one race. Claiming only certain races are allowed to wear a hairstyle is also a little racist. Wearing the hairstyle is only racist if the person is also acting like and dressing like they are from the culture that their racism says the hairstyle belongs to. People who say that a hairstyle should only be used by one race are being racist toward themselves and the people they are harassing.

Yeah, I mean, there isn't just one massive Black Culture. What if a black person who is specifically from one country with no tradition of a certain braid wears one? I understand protective hairstyles. And that black woman are deemed inappropriate for work or school for their NATURAL HAIR!!! Or even for wearing braids. But which braids is it? And who can wear them? I sincerely don't know where to draw the line. I don't go telling a Japanese person they're ONLY Asian or anything, so they can jump in on Chinese culture. Or Phillipines. So why are black people ONLY black? Why are white people ONLY white. No, im straight up German, and I get my skin color gives me immense privilege in the US, even as a white woman. His last name was very German. He said "my grandma was from Sweden and my grandpa from Germany" and our friend who looks black but is actually a mix of 3 cultures (black, Mexican and Native American) said "Sooooo, youre white." Which I found baffling. She gets so hurt when people say she's only black. Bc they invalidate her of her culture n dude.. that's what she just did to us. My friend’s fave is mom’s tamales. In 2016/2017, she saw a lot of hate from people who were supposed to be her friends. The one that stuck out most to me was when she told me about someone we used to be friends with. My friend had tamales that her mom had made the night before and she was at the microwaves to heat them up. Former friend came up to her and asked if she could have some. When my friend said no, former friend (who is white af) sat there and gave my friend a lecture on how she got all of these opportunities because she was Mexican and that it was so hard for former friend as a white person to get into colleges and get scholarships because PoC were “taking them all from her”. She proceeded to tell my friend that the government gave her and her family money, anyway, so my friend was being greedy by not letter her have a tamale. My friend, speechless, just walked away. Because what do you even say to that?

I feel kinda confused about the definition of the word „racist“ these days. Growing up I was taught that it means to think less of someone / regard them as less smart, less deserving of respect, less ... human JUST because of the colour of their skin. That’s why „racist“ was always such a horrible insult to me. And why a title like „My friends are a little bit racist“ makes zero sense to me at first glance - cause who would wanna be friends with someone that awful? My mind goes straight to like the KKK, Nazis etc. I feel like we need a new word for things that are race-related and inappropriate but that don‘t imply that you hold actual racist beliefs. Maybe something like „racially illiterate“.😅 To me, calling someone racist when the problem is just lack of education/being unaware instead of actual malicious bias and intent is kinda dangerous. If you walked up to me and said „You know, my friends are sorta racist - but they are really good people“ I‘d be like „Well, which is it??“

The problem is that their actions do cause harm, they just don't see it or understand it. They live life with rose tinted glasses and think that what they are doing is fine, when in reality it is indeed causing harm. Thus, making them a racist because they don't see that what they are doing is wrong. Racism is more subtle now because society says "it's wrong to be openly racist" but it is still taught and demonstrated on a subconscious level within the home. There are violent racists like Nazis and KKK, but there are also closet racists who just think and speak things that can hurt someone, then there are the blackfishes who think it's cool to racist. For example, I had a bunch of coworkers who were white, but talk like ghetto black guys, who walk around saying "Ni**a" just because they thought it was cool and didn't see anything wrong with it because they claimed they grew up in bad neighborhoods and that gave them an N word pass. *facepalm*

To put it in super simple terms, racism is treating people different because of their skin color and the way they look. This is why it can be subtle because there can be favoritism without people knowing it. You could use the word prejudice in this case, but since it is directed towards someone of a different race, it makes it racist. It doesn't always have to be aggressive or hostile, but like the example Anna gave, the actress and her hair. Hair texture and hair grade can't be helped, but to the white woman she didn't think her words or actions were racist. Having a disregard or being ignorant is still racist. An example here would be how Mexicans are accused of stealing jobs and invading the country, or telling them to "speak American while they are in America". People don't understand how their actions and words affect other people.

Hudson's point is he was rejected, (as demonstrated by is his own admission), because he was white. Not based on the quality of his work. When he changed his name to ethnic sounding name his work was judged differently. The optimistic view is Hudson was discriminated against because his name is perceived as white. The more pessimistic (and in my view the more realistic scenario) is the quality of his poem remained the same. The industry lowered the bar on the value of the poem and their threshold of quality, due to socio-political pressure, to look more inclusive. So it boils down to was Hudson discriminated against because his name was perceived as white, or is the industry dumbing down standards to appear diverse?? Is this the end goal of CRT advocates? Not to compete, but for the bar to be lowered so more "people of color" can participate? How is that a victory?

People should be able to wear their hair anyway they want, regardless of what culture it originated from. A good example is the Mohawk, it originated from a Native American tribe which the name comes from. Does that mean that no one else other than the descendants of this specific tribe should be allowed to have Mohawks? I strongly disagree with this mentality, race should not determine your options in self expression.

Unfortunately that just isn't working. The celebrities are getting paid to look that way, while school children and professionals are still getting reprimanded for choosing a style that is still considered exotic, avant guard, ghetto, distracting or attention seeking and therefore inappropriate for school. Scantily clad celebs certainly hasn't been enough to abolish sexist dress codes. If anything the celebs are blamed for encouraging bad behavior and the behavior is still punished.

However, where we are at, African Americans are still being ridiculed for these hairstyles. It’s only admirable when non-black, white people do it. Despite the fact that so many white celebrities have done box braids, thousands of black women are still currently getting kicked out of their jobs for doing those protective hairdos. To normalize this would only be normalizing it for white people, and taking away from its cultural significance.
@Iamjustherek
@Iamjustherek 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndromedaChace Not to mention, there is very little understanding to the differences between hair types (curl pattern, porosity, etc) and some styles are just plain dangerous on some hair types. Take for instance locs. Black peoples hair is naturally coily and thick and there is very little oil build up on the scalp. But curls inherently make the hair more vulnerable to breakage. Coily hair easily retains a twist so locing it strengthens the curl and the hair can grow super long with proper maintenance. Hair that is only wavy or straight does not easily hold a twist meaning you have to use special gels to force that hold. But this only adds build up to the hair as you continually force your hair into an unnatural position. Then if you have an oily scalp this only adds to the buildup on the hair. In the end what you get is matting and twists that aren't uniform/breaking apart. Sometimes it even destroys the hair when you try and comp it out (which you can do for locs). If a bunch of white people force their hair into locs, only to have their hair destroyed, this would only reiterate the stigma surrounding locs of it being a 'dirty' unprofessional style.

Also, if skin color doesn't matter in the face of wealth/education, then how is it that a black person in a business suit is detained by the police for no reason, but a poor white person lugging a weapon & a rebellion flag is simply told "carry on & don't cause trouble" by the police? 🤔

So you think if a poem is rejected when submitted by a white male author, but then published when resubmitted, but the author now claims to be a Chinese female, that the problem is the author pretending to be a Chinese female? Not the the publishers are determining whether a poem is worth publishing based on the presumptive race and gender of the author? Do you not see anything wrong with this? Unpopular opinion. Cultural appropriation is not only okay, it is absolutely necessary for diverse cultures to coexist peacefully through adoption of each others culture. Every single culture in history has adopted from multiple other cultures. It's sad how everything is deemed racist today. If we condemn everything that brings us together or makes us individually unique, we will only be left with groups competing against groups, or as we used to call it: racism.

Eh. I think it has to be on a case by case basis, instead of calling *everything* appropriations. War bonnets are a pretty cut and dry case of cultural appropriation since they’re the equivalent of medals in the tribes that have bonnets. You wouldn’t wear someone else’s medal since you didn’t earn it, so it makes sense that you wouldn’t wear a war bonnet that you didn’t earn. But not everything is obvious like the war bonnets.

Not just that, but the "racism" claims only flood one way. When other cultures are borrowing from other cultures all the time. This "cultural appropriation" concept should smell fishy to people because of its unidirectional flow. A human issue is a human issue regardless of race. If it's even an issue at all. People just aren't critical these days.

The bad part of cultural appropriation is not the burrowing or mixing, it's the erasure of the original culture that practiced it. For example smudging white sage is an indigenous practice from California region and it was illegal for natives to practice because they didnt have religious freedom in like the 60s still. Now all the instagram influencers do it and disrespect the practice and the environment by smudging. They also do not give credit to the practice and only do it because it's trendy. An example that would not be cultural appropriation is if you practice irish tapdancing. You say it is irish and respect the dance form etc and you're not pretending like it doesn't belong to that culture and you respect it.
@confused_shark2537

The thing is, that’s not what cultural appropriation is. That’s what people like to say cultural appropriation is. For example, cultural appropriation would be something like blackface, or to wear a war bonnet in a costume. However, there is also cultural appreciation, which is what you are advocating for.

"Cultural appropriation" itself is morally neutral. It could be either good or bad, or neither. Bad cultural appropriation is when it displaces the original demographic from which the culture originates or is employed to mock them at their expense. Like the example a commenter above gave about banning Native American cultural practices only to commercialize and profit from them. Or doing blackface to mock Black Americans.

Sorry if this question sounds ignorant, but keep in mind I'm from Ecuador, a country with very different racial issues than the US. I was once referred to as a "person of color" by an aquaintance from the US and I found the label to be extremely offensive, made me feel like I was some kind of blue alien or something, like all my culture and complex ethnicity background can be simplified to just the color of my skin (which isn't too brown actually, even though I'm 100% hispanic latino who lived in Ecuador his entire life)... but I've heard that label used a lot lately, even by people who are race rights activist. So I have to ask, why is it okay to use that label to group everyone who isn't caucasian?
@Crisjola
@Crisjola 3 жыл бұрын
It's really not imho, but the people who promote and believe in American Critical Race Theory are going to keep calling you a "person of color." The back ground on the label came about because pre Equal Rights Movement America (so 1950s backward) black people/anyone with darker skin (this also extended to some groups of dark Europeans too) were called "colored persons." The phrase was changed to things like "black" and "Afro-American" or "Morrish-American" to avoid dehumanizing anyone (as you've experienced.) I don't know *when* a bunch of people who very clearly missed that "Othering" people will cause division, came up with "Person of color" but I'd bet it was around 2000. And now that more and more and more Americans are accepting that phrase it's contributing to dehumanizing anyone who falls into those categories of non-Northern European skin-tone and facial features. So as someone who only has their ancestors in this race (I'm too light skinned for my Assyrian facial features to matter since my last name isn't "Middle Eastern" which if it were the original then I'd have a problem) you have my sympathies. :/ I would tell/ask any Americans to not "de-person" (that exact phrase) you if you're (rightfully) uncomfortable with being called a "person of color." Since, as you said, it strips you of your humanity and erases your actual background.
@technojunkie123

The way Americans use the language to describe race relations, and the complex nature of it in relation to the sociopolitics within the US, is based off of the racial history specific to America. Compared to Latin America, racial dynamics in the US have always been much more rigid to prevent miscegenation between people of different races, thus identities formed around your race historically. In the modern day the term POC is essentially a broad catch-all term that helps to provide solidarity between all the different minority groups within the US & is used to collectively discuss the struggle minorities as a whole have against white supremacy in the racial hierarchy of America.
@Crisjola
@Crisjola 3 жыл бұрын
@@technojunkie123 but it's also a (negative) "throw back" to the phrase "colored person" which is dehumanizing. Being a "person of color" or a "person of ____" is dehumanizing language. Replace it with almost anything else, a "person of heterosexual/homosexual persuasion" and it's *very clear* how dehumanizing it is. It's why phrases like "person with disabilities" aren't used outside of legal papers/etc. It removes the humanity of someone to call them as such and that a bunch of progressive brats from the 90s/2000s decided to go back 50 years to pull a racist phrase out of the past while acting like they're not racist as all hell in doing so, is imperially wrong and bad. Being racist is, as a definition, treating someone who is still a human as if they aren't a human (and sometimes less than a dog). Depersoning someone is racist to its core. I don't care what the US thinks they're doing, I live here and understand the "complex nature of… sociopolitics" and "person of color" is still dehumanizing, American or not.

@Anna Akana: I guess I've always had a problem with the term "microaggression." I've always seen aggression as something intentional. In your vignette about your white friend, she displayed rudeness born of ignorance. It's the difference between someone backing up and accidentally stepping on your foot vs. someone walking up to you and stepping on your foot intentionally. Either way hurts just as bad for you, but one person did it with intent and aggression, and the other did it out of clumsiness. There are definitely hostile, aggressive white racists out there, but there are also a lot of us who are well-meaning but clumsy. I grew up in a town that was 98% white. I had a teacher in grade school who was black and taught at that school for one year, and then I didn't see another black person in the flesh again for about three years! I live in a different place now that has at least SOME cultural diversity, but I'm still ignorant of other people's cultures. I'm a little shy about interacting with people from the Middle East because I figure I'm bound to make some sort of faux pax. It was only recently that I found out that some Asian Americans are offended if you ask them about their ethnic background. White people ask each other about our ethnic backgrounds all the time. By the way, I can't speak for your friend, but sometimes white people refer to themselves as "mutts" when they have a heritage of say, 1/8 German, 1/8 Swiss, 1/8 French, etc., in their ancestry. "White" isn't a culture; it's a skin color. There are a variety of cultures in Europe, and even white people whose ancestors came to the U.S. over a hundred and fifty years ago sometimes retain some of their cultural heritage, even if they don't label it as such. I didn't participate in the Black Lives Matter protests. There are plenty of white people who love to protest for the sake of feeling self-righteous, for the sake of being "seen" as not being racist. I figure, let them have at it. I don't want to be "seen" as not racist. I want to BE not racist. I want to be judged by my individual actions, not be "seen" with a group of people in order to be presumed as righteous. I've met a lot of white people who talk a good game, but when a lot of black people move into their school district, they'll move to a whiter school district and they'll come up with a euphemistic way of describing their actions. Please do keep talking about what other people find offensive in white people's behavior. A lot of us don't mean to offend and don't realize we're doing it.
